Hey Heat Board, Kings fan here.

I just want to drop my 2 cents into this discussion. Now, understand that Ron Artest is not one of my favorite players. I like his game, he's got so much talent, but his head is just way too big to respect. As for comparing him to Marion, they're just two different players. When it comes to hustling on the court, they're equal. Looking at Ron Ron's career stats to judge his shooting ability is not really fair, he's improved his shooting considerably over the past couple of years. He's become a very reliable shooter from anywhere on the floor and can create his own shot, something I don't see Marion doing very much. In addition, Ron's post game and ability to over-power defenders in the post is what I think puts him over Marion. Physically, he's just stronger and wider. And I extremely disagree with whoever said Artest is not versatile on defense because he's gaurded point gaurds and power forwards very well. They're pretty much equal on defense, but offensively Ron Artest is just better. But yes, he's a nutcase, so there's always risks, but if we're talking about who is the better player straight-up, I'd go with Ron. 8-)

If you're asking who is the better fit on the Miami Heat, I would go with Marion.

Why do they want to get rid of Kenny Thomas so badly? His contract is the same length as about half of the team, and Brad Miller's is the same length but larger. I'd throw in Cook along with Marion if they also would take Banks and we would get Miller and Artest.

Then we could concentrate on finding a 2-year PG.

2-year PG/Chalmers
Wade-Wright
Artest-Wright
Beasley/Haslem
Miller/Blount/Mourning

What's the Heat's salarycap situation?

Are they able to simply absorb Artest's contract while sending back Marion ( without taking back any other Kings players )?

It's unclear to me whether the Heat MUST take back additional players ( for salarycap purposes ) or that is an option that the Kings are hoisting on the Heat.

As for Artest being Artest....there is a "honeymoon" period when it comes to Artest....he was on his best behavior when he arrived in SacTown to the point where he dragged the Kings to the Playoffs that season. On top of that.....Artest is going to be angling for his contract next season...he's going to do what he can to get teams to ignore his "negatives" and focus more on his "positives".

Also.... Are the Heat trying to rebuild now?

or

Are they trying to retool and make a run for the Playoffs?

If you guys are rebuilding...then getting Artest wouldn't make much sense. But if Riley thinks that the Heat can compete now....and intend to get a difference maker like Artest for "cheap" and then resign him later...then getting Artest makes sense.

It all depends on what the Heat's long term plans are with Artest....if they want to keep him long term...they better be prepared to pay him next offseason....cuz that's what he wants in the end....to be paid the amount of $$$ that he deserves ( which is far more then what he is earning now....but not as much as he think he deserves ).

Courtesy of 'The Watcher':

Heat Get: Lamar Odom, Brad Miller

Kings Get: Shawn Marion, Udonis Haslem, Chris Mihm

Lakers Get: Ron Artest, Kenny Thomas, possibly a pick

Heat get their center, along with a small forward that's familiar with Wade.

Kings get cap space up the wazoo, a hard-nosed power forward, and a tall corpse.

Lakers get their defensive juggernaut, someone to chew toothpicks while he plays, and possibly a pick of some kind as an apology for forementioned toothpick-using player.

Successful Trade Scenario
Congratulations on a successful trade.

Due to Miami and Sacramento being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. Miami and Sacramento had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

I like that three way deal and I like the deal with Marion-Cook-Banks for Artest-Miller.

Kings don't want anything to do with Banks or Blount. Haslem/Marion are the only real players they would be interested in (other than Wade/Beasley, obviously).

Artest is a better ..
1. Man defender (Marion is overrated at this).
2. Better at creating his own shot
3. Better outside shooter ( i dont care about percentages, watching the games..Marion needs at least 5 feet of space to take a shot.)
4. About him being a headcase.. If we are good, theyll compare him to Dennis Rodman saying every winning team needs a player like him...If we suck, they will blame his personality for it, its all overblown http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBx8LSwqRpE

Marion is a better..
1. Shotblocker, better at guarding big guys.
2. Rebounder
3. Off the ball..cutting, putbacks, running the court.

It depends on what we need more, cause theyre pretty even. Though i lean towards Artest.

Anyone saying Marion is a better shooter can stop using career 3 point%, Artest is now a prolific 3 point shooter, as the 1 or 2 option. His past two years were 93/260 (35.8%) and 84/221 (38.0) after a career of sitting around 30-32 % before that. It's obvious he's improved his range dramatically. Marions best year of 3 point shooting was half a decade ago, and it has fallen off since then to around 33% for the last 5 years. When you factor in the type of shots Marion was getting as a 3-4th option in Phoenix offense where half of your shots are fast break/loosely guarded etc, versus Artests half court offense where he is doing much more work to get open shots, and I don't think you can question who has the better shot. Artest came on strong after the All-Star break hitting 42.2% of his 3's and making almost 2 a game.

It basically comes down to whether you can handle crazy.

I would do it, as Ira said, if it was Artest and Miller for Marion. I would probably turn back Artest and Thomas for Marion though. Artest, because of his craziness, is probably looking at a contract around 8 mill per year though, IMO, so he would fit under the cap if we get rid of Banks while still maintaining max space in 2010.

If we could work out an extension before the trade at around 8-9 mill per, and we were satisfied he would fit with this roster, I'd be willing to step up to Artest + Thomas + Douby for Marion + Banks possibly.

08-09
C - Blount / Anthony
PF - Beasley / Haslem / Thomas
SF - Artest / Jones / Wright
SG - Wade / Cook

PF - Beasley (4.92) / ?
SF - Artest (8.0) / Jones (4.6)

Salary: $38,240,000
Amare: $17,150,000
2010 draft pick: $1,500,000
FA: 4,000,000

2010 offseason
C - Stoudemire (17.15) / Anthony (0.7)

From what I understand Artest is looking to get paid big. I can't find a quote on it, but from what I remember he's never had anything near a max contract and is looking to get his payday next contract. 8 million isn't much above the MLE (Especially if you're averaging ie 5 yrs and 40 mil). Here's what Artest had to say about the MLE

Before announcing his decision, Artest said last week: "Even if I was to opt out, which probably won't happen, I will never accept a mid-level exception. So people trying to figure out possibilities should get that out of their heads."

He's probably looking for something like the contract Baron Davis just got 5 years 65 mil.

If that is the case I'd say forget about him, and hell no to Kenny Thomas.

If we could get Artest for 9 mill in the 2010-11 season with max raises after we could still get a max guy in as well, but for more money than that, Artest is a 1 year rental, so I'd want Brad Miller in the trade for Marion.

Artest willfor an extension. Per information from Ira W., the Heat's payroll at present is at $68m. Heat will avoid the tax this year but next year with Artest due for a big pay, I doubt it. Lets keep Marion and avoid the lunatic Artest.

I've seen a lot of trade here for Miller instead of Kenny Thomas but the latter is what the Kings want to go.
