Listening to 5reasons talk about Oladipo... they're talking about it's possible he gets lured away from Miami with a full midlevel exception... if that's what he's worth it's no big loss for Miami but I HIGHLY doubt he's only going to be worth that. I think you really have to look at the timeline for Oladipo to understand why he's where he's at now. At least Adam seems to understand Oladipo's potential this year.
2016-2017 season - OKC gives Oladipo a 4 year extension of 21 mil per year before the season starts. He ends up playing as a defensive SG with some offensive game but he's also playing with Westbrook and therefore isn't utilized like he should be, even still OKC likes him and feels they extended him to a cheap contract.
2017-2018 season - Traded from OKC to Indiana but before that happened Oladipo worked on his body in the summer and got in the best shape of his career and with that, had a fantastic season with his new team the Indiana Pacers. He went to the all-star game later that season in 2018.
2018-2019 season- Played well enough to earn an all-star reserve selection although he ruptured his quad late January and had surgery 5 days later. Missed the rest of the season.
2019-2020 bubble season - Just over a year after the injury Oladipo was back on the court. He is now in year 3 of his 4 year contract and it's quite possible he knew something was wrong with his surgery since he said he needed more time and Indiana wanted him to get back on the court(we found out later his surgery was done wrong). If people don't remember, Oladipo opted out of the bubble initially but with that costing him around 3 million dollars he ended up going to the bubble. While in the bubble Oladipo is asking other teams about joining them which sounds just wrong but if you look at the context, Oladipo possibly thinks Indiana doesn't care that he has leg issues, or they think he's lying and with that is done with them. Even if Oladipo knows he needs another surgery to fix his quad, he can't just miss another season and expect a decent payday so he continues to rehab and take games off while playing through the pain.(which looks like what happened)
2020-2021 season - Indiana and Oladipo are in the last year of his contract, he's been difficult to get on the court and Indiana isn't sure they want to give him a big contract to retain him, so he's moved. Once in Houston, they are lenient with him giving him basically all the days off he wants since Houston just wants to trade him and need him not to reinjure himself. Knowing Houston won't retain him they take basically any offer they can get for Oladipo, Riley lowballs Houston since Oladipo has made it known he wants to go to Miami, and he gets his wish. In Miami he actually ends up playing his first 2 games with the Heat with ZERO practices with his new teammates, his averages those 2 games were 7 pts, 2 reb, 5 ast, 2 stls while shooting 27% from the field in 26 minutes a night, after having a practice with his teammates he did much better for Miami, those 2 games he averaged 17 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 1.5 stls while shooting 50% from the field and 43% from 3 on 3.5 3pta per game.
So where is Oladipo now compared to where he was after his first quad surgery? He's 2 years older, but this time this surgery seems to have been done right with Oladipo saying he has no pain, and he doesn't seem to have any limp like he did before. So, although he's 29 now he may be back to where he should have been 2 years ago just needing to get the rust off him but with Miami having their 2 max players looking to create for others, Oladipo could become a 20ppg player again while being a very good defensive player.
If you look at his timeline and the circumstances, you should be able to see why he hasn't looked good playing through pain from a botched surgery and even in Miami how could he do well without zero practices with his teammates, but once he got a practice in, understood what he was supposed to do he played much better (even with him playing with pain). Even with the rust from not playing for a year I expect he's going to be in the playoff rotation and make a difference this year and I also am expecting him to get way more than the midlevel expectation from the Heat next year, there's at least 3 more good seasons in a body that's had 2 seasons off from the night-to-night grind of the NBA. When Miami acquired Oladipo, they knew he was going to have to be paid and they already knew they were going to pay Lowry also that summer, they were prepared for the tax this season but with Oladipo needing surgery, they were able to stay out of the tax for this year by only having 14 players signed out of the 15 available.
