What’s the correlation between how deep we go and how likely we are to trade the pick? Genuinely curious.
The growing desire for Riley to supplement next season's roster with a strong addition and take a shot while Jimmy is still in peak form. The more success we have, the closer we will feel we are to getting over the top
Agree, developing players are gonna start being on the back burner.
Maybe so, but I think our scouts have shown the FO they deserve first dibs if there's a prospect available they feel strongly about. The track record speaks for itself at present.
Mid-late FRP's are some of the best value contracts in the league. So much team control as well, cheap production will be imperative if we're successful enough to land a big value max guy in 2021 to go with Jimmy and a freshly maxed Bam (and extended, expensive DRob).
Look at Herro for example, on the books for:
2020-2021: $3.82m
2021-2022: $4.00m
2022-2023: $5.77m
2023-2024: $7.90m QO
He's going to be bargain value on a stretched cap sheet. Now, there's no guarantee we can hit like we have with Herro and Bam again, but I'd back our guys in to find a solid contributor.
As an example, Matisse Thybulle was #20 in the 2019 Draft. His cap hits look like:
2020-2021: $2.71m
2021-2022: $2.84m
2022-2023: $4.38m
2023-2024: $6.28m
You're not getting many rotation quality players for $2-$6m in the current NBA.

I agree with both points.
I'd sacrifice the pick without a second thought if it meant we got another very solid player in return (Crowder level).
On the other hand, I'd be very happy taking a big man with the 20th pick. Very happy.

Keep in mind we also have a number of FRP's owing in the next few seasons (2021 and 2023). So it may be our last chance to add that cheap labour for a couple years.
Having said that, if there IS someone serious that we can add that help us - we'd be remiss not to consider it. We do have a strong track record with undrafted/2nd round picks too, so that could also be a possibility if we wanted to trade back.

Funny that we've never been the team to really invest in the draft, yet when we get some lotto picks, they usually turn out to be pretty good.
Would be great to have another young big to groom.

Basically we'd be potentially looking for a Leonard/Olynyk replacement. We may want to preserve Bam a little during the regular season and continue to start a floor spacing big alongside him rather than Crowder, but I'm not sure.
Jalen Smith still looks like the best fit at #20 if available.

Miami Heat wont mess this up.
Draft board
1. Jaden McDaniels
2. Patrick Williams
3. Jahmius Ramsey
If you think Riley is not eyeing McDaniels you dont know Riley. Hes got a little Bosh and Odom to him, Project but has some handle and a shot, this is Riley eye candy who has chased every tall prospect since the beginning of time. Scout team will have William and Ramsey. Otherwise we will look to trade.

Re: 2020 NBA Draft - We have a FRP!....for now
I'm going to attempt to do a mock draft this year. However, I'm not invested enough in the process to do it all in one sitting. I'll probably just do a pick at a time, when I feel like it, or a few picks a week. I'll also be picking who I'd choose, and not trying to guess at what teams might do. Anyways, Minnesota is on the clock!
With the first pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select......

One of these guys should be available; I like Otoru and Lewis as first option, then Macdaniels and Maxey as second option. Heat prob give maxey a hard look because of kentucky connection
Daniel Otoru : to backup bam, bobby portis bam comp
Kira Lewis: pure shooter, lighting quick good potential as a sixth man, dragiccould take him under his wing, devonte graham comp
Cole anthony: aggressive scrore of the bench with ability to make tuff shots, rivers or clarkson comp
Maxey: very quick backup pg, similar to Lewis a bit more polished but a lesser shooter, I think Lewis has more potential
Bey: good role player 2 way player, Covington comp
Mcdaniels: potential potential, good size forward with size and ball skills, will need a bit of time because of frame. Poor man young ingram Comp
Jalen smith: servicable frontcourt players able to stretxh the floor, poor man miles turner comp

I would be fine with picking Kira Lewis, Cole Anthony, Jahmius Ramsey, Tyrell Terry, Josh Green, Tyrese Maxey or Saddiq Bey depending on who is available. #20 is a good spot to pick from for this team.

I fast tracked my draft lottery thanks to Realgm's own draft simulator!

Nice ! Not sure of I would pass on Oturu and Lewis if available though, they could be the steals of the draft, wish we could get both

Thanks! Figured I'd spend a month on it, as I'm not really keen on team needs, outside of our own and a few others. However, this simulator really made the process easier. It was a little weird on finding some players, as best player available was apparently very subjective, but it only took minimal effort to eventually find the guy I was looking for.
I've been on the Jalen Smith train all year. I really like his athleticism, shot blocking, and shooting stroke. I think he could end up being a great complement to our post rotation.
I'm a fan of Oturu. I'd be fine adding him. Lewis...not so much. I see the allure, but I think there are deficits there that aren't worth choosing him over another player.

Boy looks good. I'd like to add Oture, Jalen, and Carey. That's just me though.

I can see3 connections being developped on the heat: the kentucky, the market and the nigerian. Keep an eye on oladipo, and oturu...

Oh I get the financial value. And I am probably more incline to playing rookies than the organization. Looking at the Heat track record, when they see a window for a title team, player development and even finances take a back seat. They usually build a ROSTER that can make a run for about two years max. Even the Big 3 era, the roster was built to last two years, 2011-12 and 2012-13 season. After 2013 they were already trying to rebuild the roster around the big 3. I dont think the Heat care about keeping role players for a long time (one of the reason I kept stating that WInslow and JRich were trade pieces once it became obvious they were just role players). And they do not want to take coaching time to develop a role player while they are making a run. I think Nunn and Herro just made it across the threshold before the switch of the team focus. I think Okpala was half way in and out of the threshold because even thou he got drafted at the same time as Herro, he missed the entire summer league. He started his development when the coaches were focused on getting the roster ready for the season. And now the who COVID-19 outbreak looks to be leaving Okpala behind again.
