Ran the numbers and the most the Heat could offer Oden while remaining in the 2nd tier of luxury tax is $2,525,966 of their mini-MLE. Now this is assuming that:
1) Joel Anthony is traded
2) The Heat pick up the contract of Jarvis Varnado at $788,872
3) A veteran (your choice) is signed to a 1 year minimum deal (must be a 1 year deal without a player/team option otherwise the salary cap hit is no longer just $884,293)
4) A rookie contract is added to round out the 15. For this I used James Ennis at $473,604 (I used LaVoy Allen's contract with Philly as a guideline as he was also the 50th pick[2011] under the new CBA)

All of these transactions put the Heat at $9,999,999 over the cap which is the max allowed under the 2nd tier tax of $1.75 per dollar. After looking at the numbers I can clearly see why Mike Miller had to be amnestied.

Lol don't shoot the messenger. No contract is untradeable in the NBA. Philly must add salary to their payroll or otherwise pay their roster a prorated bonus if they do not meet the salary floor. Perhaps for their 1st round pick obligation to be removed (The Heat aren't getting the 1st anyways but it saves Philly 2 2nd rounders) and some other sweetener, cash considerations, etc. to take on Joel Anthony.

is Joel's contract really untradable, or just that no one wants to help us specifically? For $4M, Joel isn't even close to one of the worst contracts in the league. And, he's a great defender with elite shot blocking. At worst, we should be able to package him with a 2nd round pick and dump him like we did Dexter.

as excited as I am about the possibility of oden playing for the heat, I really wonder how he would fit on their team. their defense is revolved around speed and help defense, and as athletic as oden is (correction: might be) i'm skeptical about how he would fit in.

that being said, they can do what they did with mike miller and pretty much bench him for the RS, keep him healthy while still training him and use him when they really need in the playoffs.

on the other hand, i'm confident spo and his team would find a way to make oden useful.

I don't like how many hypotheticals & unknowns there are in this whole scenario...

If oden can be hetlhy u think it would be awesome on defense. He can hold down the middle and out perimiter defenders wouldnt have to help so much, we could force shooters off the 3pt line and right into the oden.

i'm not questioning his interior presence, but there are also other factors like his pick and roll defense.

u cant be one sided in the nba unless u play for the miami heat. U gotta have SOME kind of offensive skills, whether its a mid range shot, or a running hook. W/e, the dude cant even catch a ball. I hope we can ship him out but its unlikely.

Joel has actually gotten a lot better at catching the ball, and IMO has a somewhat functional jump hook. I don't think he's as bad as everyone makes him out ot be. The problem is more that he's so undersized and not a very good defensive rebounder.

Joel is terrible. He's a defensive specialist center that can't rebound and is too small to guard most quality centers. Offensively, he's one of the 5 or 10 worst players in the league. Our defensive system is pretty much the best system in the league for Joel, with all our emphasis on switching and mobility, and even we can't play him because he's too bad on the glass and too inept offensively.

I like his attitude a lot but the guy can't play. Nobody is going to take him unless we package at least one pick, and even then we might not get any takers.

I'm not worried about how Oden would fit in with out defensive scheme. We can modify the way we trap and rotate if we had a staunch rim protector back there. I don't think we'd rely so much on him trapping on the pnr, so much as we'd focus on funneling the ballhandler to him. I could be wrong though. I'd laugh if we used him the same as our other bigs, and his knee gave out again. Whatever...let's just sign him first, then worry about his longevity later.... Why does that read like every bad idea ever?

The Joel Anthony's "terrible" comments are missing the point. The team that takes on his contract is only doing so for the incentive. Philly in particular has extra incentive to make the deal.

Listen to RV. Trading for Joel wouldn't necessarily be only trading for his services.

Crazy thought: Could he work in Memphis off the bench? They've been great at helping us out with trades in the past.

RE: Oden's D: I think people are forgetting that Spo adjusted the defense when he took over in '08/'09 to be more frenetic in order to make up for the departure of "SO-Zo" in the middle. We had to blitz/hedge/trap harder and jump into the passing lanes in order to get stops. Oden was an extremely gifted rim protector even after having lost athleticism. That has a huge effect on what teams want to do offensively.
