On espn, The only thing about riley was that he didn't attend the Rose workout but that he talked to Rose on the Phone. Maybe Riley is here talking to Shawn Marion and his people. Wow what a busy week for the miami heat people. Half are running around doing some scouting to the top 5 players, Others are Negotiating contracts, The rest are Scouting Second rounders. I wana know how much rileys phone bill will add up to. Long distance Calls and for hours @ a time. Riley Get off the phone and just take Beasley.

Does anyone know anything about Beasley's workouts the previous days.

From what I understand, the reason Riley wasn't there, was because it was in L.A. It seems Rose agent hasn't planned well. This BJ Armstrong guy sounds like he sucks as an agent. Or is this common, that the team with the second pick has such hard time getting descent scheduling to see one of their prospects.(I really haven't followed this drafts this close, because the Heat has never had a second pick)

So far i think BJ has done a bad job. Most Prospects have time to met with about 5 teams and rose has only met 2 and you can argue the last one was not really a workout(No Riley). Also Rose is letting his brother handle things and Bj is new at this. Overall, I would say that this is the strangest draft in sometime. This also could be because of Riley.

I think Riley has a lot to do with it, he loves to cause confusion; if the Heat was in this same #2 position last year i could see Riley having a field day talking about the good attributes of Oden, Durant and Horford. You can be sure that Riley would have snuck Horford into the conversation, I can see it now "he is hard working, defensive oriented, winner, overall team player..yaddaayaddda"

From the Miami Herald sports buzz...

If the Bulls draft Derrick Rose as many expect, should the Heat, picking No. 2, be concerned about off-court issues with Michael Beasley? Absolutely not, his two most recent coaches say.

''Ask everybody Mike has played for, and there's not one question about his work ethic, leadership or character,'' Kansas State coach Frank Martin said. ``He's the best teammate I've been around in 23 years in basketball. People have pulled me aside in Wal-Mart telling me what a wonderful kid he is, how he helps them get groceries.''

Bill Barton, who coached Beasley at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., said by phone, ``Michael is probably one of the most coachable kids I ever had, and tied for first as the most likable. I spent a year with him, and I didn't have a single problem with him. He came to practice and school every day. He graduated. He's polite, always in a good mood.

``He had age-appropriate behavior -- maybe he forgot his homework or talked in class. He's a fun-loving kid but did nothing to be considered a punishable offense. He's the farthest thing from a character problem.''

Martin said Beasley switched high schools often (five in four years) because his family believed ''he should go somewhere else'' and that he was never dismissed. He was a prankster in high school -- including drawing graffiti -- but has matured. And he has never been arrested, Martin said. Bruce Shingler, a K-State assistant, is putting his career on hold to live with Beasley next season.

Beasley, expected to go second if Rose goes first, has strong support inside the Heat's front office, but the question is whether Pat Riley will feel comfortable with his maturity level, or whether anybody will make an extraordinary offer for the pick. Beasley's visit went well -- his workout was impressive, and on Thursday he joined Riley and 12 other Heat employees at Prime 112, where he sat beside Erik Spoelstra and munched on a Kobe beef burger and fries.

Warning to the Bulls. Rose is a risk. He CAN'T SHOOT.

He's been overhyped by the lore of the point guard, between Nash's MVPs and Chris Paul's ascension. Reminds me of the trap the Pistons got into 5 years ago, thinking they found the next Dirk, instead it was just Darko Milicic. Or 5 years before that, when the Clippers picked Michael Olowokandi, hoping to find the next great center, instead...you know the rest. The next pick in 03 was Carmelo. And in 98 was Bibby. Those would have been nice for both teams.

The Bulls will pick Rose. Next pick is Beasley. Looks like the pattern will continue.

Rose won't be the best player in this draft. Beasley is the real mega-star, as people recognized long before Rose made people notice him during the NCAA tourney. Then everyone forgot about Beasley's dominance. Once the Bulls pick Rose, they will have to make a decision with their other three point guards, three of the better point guards in the league, mind you. Hinrich has an ugly, too-large contract. I don't see why anyone would trade for him with a contract that big. I am very interested to see how that will play out. Then there's Duhon the defensive-minded 3-pt shooter. Duhon will probably just walk and get a nice MLE deal somewhere (Miami, perhaps). That leaves Ben Gordon. A hero who helped this team escape from the baby Bulls era. Unfortunately, his contract is too small to get anything of equal value, since he would otherwise get 10+ mil a year. And Gordon said he wants out.

I think a backcourt of Rose and Gordon would work well. It would be terribly undersized and get creamed on defense, but offensively would be fierce. It won't happen because Gordon does not want to share the spotlight, especially since this upcoming season he will want to be in the spotlight in this contract year.

In summary, your best shooter is Gordon. You are going to lose him this summer. You are replacing him with Rose. Who can't shoot. Your next priority is finding a power presence. When it's all said and done, your shooting (which, trust me, as a Heat fan I saw this first hand, was your bread and butter), is severely damaged.

The only perimeter player I've ever seen who can't shoot but can still be the best player on the court and lead a team to glory is Wade. And he is of a rare breed. Look at who is winning: Pierce/Garnett/Allen are all shooters. Ginobili and Parker are big time shooters. Billups and Hamilton. Kobe. All since 2000. All can shoot the hell out of the ball.

Look who isn't winning: Jason Kidd--can't shoot, despite 2 Finals appearances and a trade to a title contender. The Cavs couldn't shoot. (And guess who amazingly accepted the king of not being able to shoot, Larry Hughes, from the Cavs in a trade. Hmmm.)

This is a hard choice for the Bulls. Especially with the media making Rose seem like the obvious choice (after almost a year of saying Beasley is the obvious choice). But when I look at this, I wonder how the Bulls could pass up Beasley, who is a sure thing. Miami is in full-blown rebuilding mode. We have the luxury of not having to make this extremely tough decision. The Bulls are in a much different situation, but who they pick determines whether their team gets torn apart with trades or just adds a smart piece to the puzzle that not only fits a need but will be a superstar in that position (PF). It was only a couple of years ago the Bulls took down the defending champs with a rising star in Gordon and Hinrich (USA team) in the backcourt. The Bulls were close to being a leading eastern conference team. Now you are banking in a huge way on Rose to be as good as that, or as you hope, even better. But right now, Rose can't shoot. Beasley can. And at 19, and some time under Bob McAdoo and hopefully another inch or more of growth, he will be a 6'9/6'10 versatile PF who can play anywhere and shoot. And he will team with Wade. ( :D ) Then there's Rose. Think: glorified Devin Harris with better PG skills. Big risk. Big mistake.

As I said...

It's a TRAP.

^^ No need to bring down Rose becasue you like Beasley. If you watched Rose play, you could see that the kid has the ability to shoot the ball. Does it look pretty? No, but it gets the job done and will still improve.

While I agree that getting Rose wouldn't be as good as getting Beasley, I don't think he's a trap. The guy will be a quality point guard in the league. I mean he led his team within inches of winning the ncaa championship as the star his FRESHMEN year. That's something that cannot be understated.

Anyways going back to Beasley, I think Riley really likes the guy he's just trying to make it look like he's not. Riley has a million tricks up his sleeve to get the player he wants and he hardly ever makes his true intentions known until his plan takes effect. Wade for example noone would have guessed we would draft.

Riley knows the importance of a big man and while Beasley can talk all he wants about how he thinks he could play small forward, if the Heat draft him, he's playing PF and he will be a low post presence. The guy is already ~6'8, ~240 and was a 20 10+ player in college and if he grows another 2 inches, he could play center in today's shaq-less nba.

This is all a smoke screen. Pat riley hates Prime 112, So why would he take a player to a resturant he does not like. Also i hear that Beasley hates Kobe and that he would never eat his burger. Aw the lies and deception. When will this all come to in end. I really think riley will target Deandre Jordan. The guy is being bashed and thats all riley trying to play him down.

I think the Rose can't shoot, by that guy is super overblown. Fact he states guys like Tony Parker, being great shooters. Even young Jordan, Issiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, all this couldn't hit a three, consistently at one point. In the NBA you need to have midrange though, Rose midrange looks very solid, I think his range will improve. Here in this site, they have some wortout video's of Rose.

http://www.drosehoops.com/rose/index

I think Rose is going to the Bulls though, but we might be lucky if somehow Beasley gets taken by them.

Rose is what, 19? He has lots of time to improve his jumper. Wade improved his jumper after he came in. Lots of guards have come in needing to improve their jump shots.

Again, I see Rose as being a Steve Francis-type player, but he seems to be more mature and better decision-maker. I think if I had the #1 pick, I would take Beasley, but I am not the most informed because I don't watch college ball.

I think Beasley can come in and have an immediate impact, much like Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant did last year.

Hey wasn't Lane just at Prime 112 also? Ira will stop at nothing for a scoop :D

I really hope we get Beasley besides the maturity issue (which I think has been overblown) he seems like the perfect player to pair with Wade.

Steven A says, the Heat picking Beasley is 50/50.

Interesting remark from Steven A Smith. It seems Wade is not overly excited about Beasley.

Wade this year wants to play off the ball.

I know Steven A is not super reliable, but it does make you think. Riley might go for Mayo.

Wade is going to Chicago, so it doesn't matter what he wants. We need to figure out what works for Larry Hughes.

Stephen A Smith knows as much about what the Heat are going to do as my left nut does :D But to reply to his point, its pretty well known that Magic wanted the Lakers to trade their top pick in 82 for Mark Aguirre who was his buddy, and had been the top pick the previous year. West overruled him and they drafted Worthy the rest is history..Point being Wade may have his opinions but he doesn't decide who we draft (at least i hope Riley is smarter than that). :D

Steven Screaming Smith is a bum. Steven A, Used to be good at reporting things about miami but since his boy left(Shaq), he lost all of his sources. Honestly, If reports are right and Beasley was seen eating dinner with the team, I think he will be the pick. You don't get that close to someone you think your trading. I love Riley, Everything is a mystery. Riley is playing his cards right and seeing if someone comes with a offer he cant refuse, If they do then he takes it and if not he is happy with Beasley.

Return to Miami Heat
