The fact is, no matter how good Riley's sales pitch and gameplan are to maximize Hayward, the personal connection he had with Stevens and BOS's perceived flexibility with assets matter greatly. Even if Ainge sits on his hands and does nothing, he looks like a threat in a trade for nearly every disgruntled star player going forward. Miami would be capped out with limited mobility with whoever the signed on a max contract. Riley can say "Ainge doesn't get you players, I will" (which is true track record-wise), but that talk only goes so far without pics, limited space, and not many young assets. Sure, Spo can maximize Hayward, but what else can we offer team-wise in terms of mobility going forward? We were outsiders from the beginning. Nothing wrong with that. I would be ecstatic to sign Hayward but the cards were never really in our favor. It would say a lot about Riley and this team to pry him away from Utah and Boston.

We were in talks for "one of the whales" that's more than most teams. If he doesn't choose us that's okay. There's certianly no recrimination on Pat who got us into the discussion and the starting hate towards Hayward is just stupid - it would be if he chose to go somewhere else but it really is when we haven't even heard his decision yet.
