Re: Official June 20th 2019 Draft Thread
I'm all for trading down if Jimmy Butler can be had. Use 13 to dump JJ...then use 26 to dump another contract (Whiteside). Add a couple 2nd round picks in the process. Dragic I'm pretty sure we could move without attaching a major asset.

Richardson
Butler

Re: Official June 20th 2019 Draft Thread
It's hard to tell but the thumb injury may have cause him to cock the ball back further. But it's hard to tell. I had the same shooting issue in 9th to 10th grade. I was a jump shooter who jumped high on my shots and that's good when you are shooting close or midrangers but it hurts your 3 point shot. His arm and elbow is fine it's just ball placement in his hand.

Huh, what's good at high school level?SlowPaced wrote:MettaWorldPanda wrote:SlowPaced wrote:I will concede that if Romeo can indeed shoot and the hand injury isn't just a lame excuse, then he's the best pick for us. Scorer with the most upside if that's the case.
But it's just...that...I'm...skeptical. He wasn't even a good shooter before the hand injury, pretty meh at high school. It'd be one thing if his FT% was high, usually a good indicator, but even that is pedestrian at 72%.
He was 36% three point shooter in high school without torn ligament in hand. He's got workable mechancis unlike the dude from USC who shoots like he's trying out for shot put olympics.
36% isn't good at high school level though.
Anyway, we'll see how it goes with Romeo. I hope I'm wrong on him, be it with the Heat or elsewhere.

Re: Official June 20th 2019 Draft Thread
I dislocated my thumb, and two other fingers on my shooting hand. The thumb was the only one that force me to shoot with my left in which I got really good with and learn to play ambidextrous. But the pain extended to the base of the palm of my hand. My fingers I was able to tape up and shoot. My middle finger and ring finger are jacked up because I dislocated them so much and keep wrapping them up with tape and popsicle sticks lol. When I broke my thumb I actually learn to shoot better with my left. It taught me better foot work as well.

For an elite shooting guard prospect? At least 40% I'd say.
For reference, high school 3PT% of some of the best SGs in the league right now:
James Harden - 47%
Klay Thompson - 50%
Bradley Beal - 49%
C.J. McCollum - 41%
DeMar DeRozan - 53%
Jrue Holiday - 40%
Couldn't find data on Oladipo or Booker but you get the point.

Re: Official June 20th 2019 Draft Thread
The only problem with this video, they are focus on him in a shoot around. That is not his natural shot. They are right about how he uses his legs that it what makes him a jump shooter. But in those shoot around he not using his legs much as if he was serious in a game. In a game jump shooter use their legs to put power and arch in the ball and wrist is strictly for distance. Spot up shooter use their arm a lot more for lift.MettaWorldPanda wrote:

SlowPaced wrote:To the people on the Romeo bandwagon, convince me that his shooting woes won't be an issue at the next level, especially considering what we have. I'm open to it.
These are the compelling points:
- One of the best wings in the draft at slashing
- Gets into the paint at a high rate
- Finishes at the rim at a high rate
- Did this all despite having one of the absolute worst 3-point shooting teams around him (31% as a team -- ranking 316 out of 351)
- NBA spacing helps slashers thrive. Should help Romeo 2fold compared to his situation at Indiana
- One of the more successful midrange shooters among wings in this draft (40% on 2-point jumpers)
- One of the best isolation players in the draft (76th percentile)
- One of the best pick and roll ballhandlers in the draft (90th percentile)
- Arguably the best combination of iso and P&R ballhandling of all perimeter players in the draft and easily the best that will be available to us
3-point shooting is the concern. But, he's a shotmaker. He knows 3-point shooting is his perceived weakness and wants to refine it. I believe his struggles 3-point shooting stem from 2 things: (1) the torn ligament on his thumb of his shooting hand and (2) his need to develop as a spot up shooter. He's always been the source to create offense. He's never worked to be a catch and shoot player. The numbers back that up as he was basically at his worst in catch and shoot situations. He needs to develop that skill for the league. Get healthy and tweak his mechanics while at it and I think the result is an at least solid 3-point shooter with an elite ability to get into the paint and finish and an ability to score on all 3 levels.
That's the hope here IMO.
