Next Season: Who do we want back?

Post#1 » by indiegrind » Mon Jun 6, 2011 4:09 pm

If it were up to you, who will carry their roster spot over into next season.

keepers
lebron
wade
bosh
haslem
miller
anthony
jones
chalmers
pittman
bibby

upgradables
dampier
howard
ilgauskus
house
magloire

As much as I remain unsatisfied with Spo as our coach, Im not even going to waste my breath because he is secure to return. If we are going to be stuck with Spo, I want continuity to carry over into next season, so no major overhauls, just upgrades at center and another option at PG with some defense. I'd love to have the luxury of making bibby backup pg, and having chalmers as backup 2. If nothing presents itself that is a substantial upgrade over house then bring him back. He does have quite a motor for his age, and he can still shoot and brings energy and enthusiasm.

Your list looks good except I dunno about Bibby. That one's kinda touchy... on the one hand, we should feel kinda indebted to him because he sacrificed 6 million to help us out. On the other, he's not getting any younger and has been forgettable in these playoffs.

Do we have his bird rights? Or can we only offer him the vet min? I'd gladly take him back on a vet min deal without any guarantees on his starting job back, but would not want to give him much more than that.

Still, the main goal is to use whatever extra money we have left under the new CBA towards the center position.

i have the same list...while bibby is upgradable, there are no real options at starting pg next yr...for the vet min. he may be our best option

maybe if barea is willing to sign for the lle (doubt it) but otherwise id ride out bibby for 1 more year and look for our pg in 2012 w/ the MLE (billups?)

i say sign dalembert for mle, draft a guard off the bench like shelvin mack, jenkins or selby, bring back bibby and sign a pg like billups in 2012 w/ the MLE

I agree with your list, except Bibby. I think there can be an upgrade there. Possibly in the draft and Mario starting.

Mario still has time to improve. He's really growing and showing up in the Finals.

I'd want a PG that is tough and can play D. That's all.

It's crazy how in the beginning of the season and during, most would have NOT included Anthony on that list.

Funny how things change. I for one owe him an apology for being so harsh on him. He has really proven his value.

Plus, Spo's gotta get credit on that as well. So many here and other Heat fans came down on Spo for sticking by him. I kept thinking "maybe he sees something we don't."

It just goes to show you that a back seat driver can easily be wrong. We only see the finished product, but are not behind the scenes to view the things the coaching staff sees.

But for sure Bibby must go. And, of course we still need another center, at the least Anthony could be a back up, depending on how we get.

Bibby, Howard, Z, Mags, House, and Dampier are due all for their Swan songs (Not necessarily pt).

Joel's value is based entirely around the other 4 guys on the floor and their commitment to playing defense (although I will admit our familiarity with the offense has helped us work around him more as the season has gone on).

Joel's help D is nice in a lazy regular season game, but often times is wasted. In the playoffs, when everyone is flying around at 100% and trying their asses off, it turns a good D into a great one.

Could still clearly use an upgrade there though. We could win it all with him, but we make it harder on ourselves, and we'll never win 70+ in a regular season with Joel starting at center (not that that's necessary, but just a fact).

Here is my thoughts guys! The stars have proven themselves and Miller, Haslem and Chalmers have come through off the bench. Well I think we let Pittman and Joel share the center spot since we will go small in the 4th quarter anyway! draft Nolan Smith in the 2nd round. Let Chalmers start and look for a veteran who can back him up! This will keep our defense the way it should be and allow continuity on offense!

I'm with you guys on Bibby. I originally was against keeping him, but the truth is, I dont really see any younger, better options than him for a min contract. I dont think Bibby is done. If he can get back his shooting touch it will be like night and day as to his value for this team. He does other things well, and has played much better and smarter defense during the playoffs.

Part of the reason is also that I think it would hurt our chances of getting others to sacrifice money to play for the heat in the future if we were to dump Bibby. I say give him at least one more year.

I do think Wade needs to start transitioning to more of a point guard role.

WE KEEP EVERYONE BESIDES THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO RETIRE LOLL and go get Samuel Dalmbert to be our starting center and let Mario get his starting job back with Miller and Haslem off the bench this team is good and if in one year can win a ring we just need some small adjustments =)

I think everyone's list is going to be about the same. The 6 guys with longterm deals are back autmoatically. Then jones/chalmers have shown they deserve spots and they'll stash Pittman for at least another year (still don't think he will play much).

My thing with Bibby is that even though I don't want him back, he did give up 6 million to be here, so if he wants to come back at the minimum then you have to let him have at least the 3rd string spot. Chalmers is looking more like he can be a good starter with this team and definitely a good backup. We'll get another guy in there to share time with him either as the starter or as the #2.

House isn't gonna want to stay and it seems like Howard and Mags are gonna retire. Big Z and Damp have been good at times (for backup big men) but have completely fallen off. If there was a fixable reason for their declines I'd bring either back as the 3rd or 4th center otherwise we probably will go for someone else.

So thats probably 5 spots. MLE, LLE, High second, and minimum guys. We'd need a point guard, a center, a shooting guard, a deep backup center and a deep back up power forward. I could see Riley splitting the MLE if none of the top guys go for it. If we do give out a full MLE contract I'd rather it be a 4 yr deal so it lines up with everyone else, unless the guy is young and really good.

Can we save this for the offseason? We're going to have 3 long months of no basketball to kill time in.

If Mag doesn't retire then I want him to stay. I have mad respect for him as a player and if someone is going to sit on our bench (and get random minutes) then I'd rather he have it than some random.

Magloire isnt even THAT old? Why would he retire? Isnt he like 32?

He doesnt have any nagging injuries. Orlando was interested in him this year too. I dont see him retiring.

No need for the green I'd love to have both back next season.

Wright is an ideal player for our team. Long, athletic and can hit 3's could you think of a better bench player.

Beas, with a little defensive work has the skills to take over and give Lebron and Wade a rest, though probably not as good a fit as Wright.

RE-SIGN RIO AT ALL COSTS, can't believe I'm saying that but there will be a market for him and we might get (gulp) priced out. Start Rio, 15 mins off the bench for Bibby. Throw the MLE at Dalembert (Nene would be of course the 1st option but that's more of a wish than a realistic possibility). Joel Anthony goes back to what he was always supposed to be: a 4th big playing 10-15 mins a night of pure hustle and defensive intensity. James Jones may decide to not come back. Sexy Dexy gets to be the fifth big. Draft Nolan Smith.

PG: Rio
SG: Wade
SF: Bron
PF: Bosh
C: Dalembert

6: Haslem
7: Mike Miller
8: Bibby
9: Anthony
10: (Jones)
11: Pittman
12: Nolan Smith

Keep:

Wade, Bron, Bosh, Miller, Haslem, Anthony, Rio, JJ (if he stays), Pittman

Gone:

House (if he goes), Bibby, Howard, Z, Dampier, Magloire

That means we bring in 6 new guys. Dalambert, our 2nd round pick, maybe Varnado and then a PG. The rest is filler.

House could be useful, but is so streaky, he really isn't. Bibby just hasn't gotten it done this playoffs. PEACE.
