Shannon Brown to join the Heat? Riley in talks with Agent

There soon could be a Brown in town for the Heat. Maybe two.

Mark Bartelstein, who represents free agents Kwame Brown and Shannon Brown, said Tuesday night he has had in-depth discussions with Miami about both.

The Heat desperately need a center, and Kwame Brown could fit the bill, having averaged 7.9 points and 6.8 rebounds for Charlotte last season.

"We've talked to Miami quite a bit," Bartelstein said. "We're going through the process and hope to make a decision in the next few days… Miami's a great team and a championship contender and he's got the potential (to help)."

Bartelstein named Charlotte, Boston, Toronto, Philadelphia and Sacramento as other teams in the mix for Kwame Brown. Bartelstein said he's also talked to Heat president Pat Riley about Shannon Brown, a shooting guard who averaged 8.7 points last season for the Lakers.

"We've talked about him with Pat," Bartelstein said of Shannon Brown, who was LeBron James' teammate in Cleveland from 2006 to 2008. "They're looking for wings. Teaming with LeBron and Dwyane (Wade) would be incredible. (Shannon Brown) is very athletic. They (the Heat) like him."

IF we do keep Miller, I like the Shannon Brown signing...

K. Brown/Bosh/James/Wade/Chalmers
Curry/Haslem/Miller/S. Brown/???
Anthony/???/???/House/Cole

Sounds good to me!

I see Brown as posturing my his agent. I do not see that as a good fit for the roles we need on this team. If he wasnt also Kwames agent I doubt this makes news. Now what I want to hear is us reaching out to Tayshaun.

Most of the time, what you don't hear is what is really is being talked about.....

My #1 free agent wing would be Tayshaun followed by Battier.

Cant Shannon brown run the point though? It might not have worked in the triangle but with what we need in a PG, brown is essentially a more athletic mario chalmers. His defense is probably better and he makes less stupid mistakes. He just doesnt have the outside range of Mario.
He'd be dynamite on the open floor with Wade, Bron, Bosh

People talk about getting rid of MM and who know maybe he stays? People talk about Battier but we maybe going hard after a S&T player. Prince is a great player and yet no one is talking about him? You think no one is calling him or seeing what it would take?

Based on what you're saying:

We're signing Tayshawn Prince and we're somehow pulling a S&T for a Center...

but Riley is an idiot and we'll be screwed without a good Center and keeping Mike Miller (reverse jinx once again)

Dalembert's gone dark, as has Nene. They must have deals. I hope we're one of the teams. PEACE.

Lakers fan here. Shannon Brown is nothing short of horrible. He's got one of the lowest BBIQ's that I've ever seen, and outside of being extremely athletic he doesn't bring much else to the table. He's just a stupid player, and if you recall, one of the dumb asses that showed up to the CBA negotiations with a hoodie and backpack. How he managed to become a player rep is one of the great mysteries of our time.

He's a horrible defender, despite having all the right physical tools to be an elite defender. He can't stay in front of his man worth a damn, and he's always out of position and generally lost on defense. He'll get the occasional steal from a gamble which leads to a highlight dunk that'll make you forget how much he sucks, but eventually the buzz fades and you're right back to hating him.

His outside shot is streaky at best. He started off last season on fire, but after December he just couldn't hit diddly squat. Had me eating my words for a few months, but he quickly reminded me why I hated him the year before. As many wide open looks as he gets you'd think he'd shoot a better percentage, but nope, he just can't shoot.

He over-dribbles the ball and completely wastes possessions, typically dumping it off at the last second for someone else to take a bail out shot. He doesn't know how to move the ball, make entry passes, or anything else that involves the slightest bit of technical thought.

His handles really aren't that great. They're decent, but if you're looking for someone to run the point, keep looking.

I hated the fact that we brought him back last season. He's an incredible athlete, but an absolutely horrible player.

Having said that, you guys should definitely sign him. ;)

I'm not so sure.

I'd say they are about equal. Maybe a slight upgrade. Maybe.

I can't really comment on Chalmers because I don't know how bad he is on a regular basis, but if he at least makes smart decisions on the court and understands how to pass the ball to the right players then he's already better than Shannon.

Chalmers, from what I recall, was a fairly reliable shooter for you guys in the playoffs. His numbers seem to back that up. Shannon Brown, in consecutive seasons, has been abysmal in the post-season. When defenses tighten up and there is the slightest bit of pressure, he shrinks. The guy shot a combined 16/57 from downtown the past two post-seasons, and I can assure you that those were mostly wide open shots. He was great in 08-09, but I consider that largely a fluke. He pretty much pulled a Vujacic on us.

If you're looking to replace Chalmers with a guy that can hit shots, he's definitely not your man. The Mavs and Hornets were practically ignoring him in the playoffs, and he still couldn't make them pay. The Lakers got bounced this year because they couldn't hit their outside shots, and Brown was a big part of the problem (along with that scrub Blake).

Chalmers has definitely become a more reliable shooter.

As for the decision making thing....ehh...not so much. He's still got work to do there.

I fully agree. This post from the Lakers board sums up the situation -

ROballer wrote:The Heat are apparently interested in Kwame and Shannon Brown.Maybe they sign Smush too to unite the 3 biggest knuckleheads the Lakers have seen in the past 5 years

Kwame is fine though, we are desperate for a C.

He'd be a good player if he understood his role, stand in your corner and shoot. But he thinks he's some kind of superstar, he'll try and create his own shot, which he cant do, and he's indecisive with the ball. It's ugly.

Jay From LA wrote:
coolstorybro wrote:The Brown Brothers (I know they really aren't brothers) would be decent additions, but if those guys are our major pick-up's the off season will have been a failure IMO.

Add a guy like Battier or Prince into that mix - then it's a success. I want a wing defender!

If Miller is getting in the way of adding Battier we should amnesty him.

Edit:
I remember Shannon Brown was on fire from 3 to start last season but eventually leveled off. At 26 years old he may have some up-side, though I question his basketball IQ.

Shannon Brown was the best shooter on our team in the beginning of the season, then he lost his shot, he was the stupidest player on the team, no BBIQ on the guy. If he can get his shot back he'd be a good addition to the Heat, but he doesn't really provide anything, he can't pass, has bad handles, etc.

This is what agents do. Go out to the media and list all these teams their player is supposedly talking to in order to make them look more desirable or raise an asking price.
