Will Miami host an All Star Game?

Post#1 » by FlashFlare » Wed Jul 4, 2012 2:14 am

Looking at the history of All Star Weekend, Miami has hosted it once in 1990. Cities like LA, Houston, and New Orleans have hosted or will host the event multiple times in the last decade. So why hasn't Miami been considered for a future All Star Weekend? It's an amazing venue and I'm sure players and their families will enjoy themselves as well. It would be great for the city.

So why hasn't the NBA considered Miami as a spot for the All Star Weekend? And will All Star Weekend come to Miami soon?

I asked this before and someone said NO because of the logistics(trafiic, location) and stuff. This may change though because we host ZO's Summer groove for years.

Traffic has always been a problem but it can't be any worse than Los Angeles, even Las Vegas a couple years back. I hope Miami gets to host the event in the future.

In my personal opinion, I would absolutely love it if Miami could host an NBA All Star Weekend. If we could host Wrestlemania, why not the NBA? With that said, there are a myriad of reasons why this could happen. This comes up every few months, so I'll answer: NO, and here's why.

1. Big Daddy Arison isn't too keen on the ASG taking place here because HEAT season ticket holders aren't given enough access or opportunity to the event, among other technical reasons.

2. Traffic is miserable enough as it is; to have the whole world in Downtown Miami covering this event would be an absolute nightmare for that week beyond even that of the NBA Finals.

3. I didn't feel like writing a third reason, so I hope you have a solid enough idea by this point.

Pretty sure the issue is when the allstar game takes place. I think there are a lot of events going on around that time which makes it hard to host another

All-Star game in the middle of February...

Yeah, so much goes on here during that late winter/Spring season (who am I kidding? no such thing as winter in SoFla, lol). Downtown's traffic is bad enough as is. It's worse on those weekends. Compound that with a huge sporting event, an ALL STAR GAME?

Jesus Christ.

I wouldn't necessarily be against it, though. I would love it if the city had an All-Star game. You'd probably catch me at the arena like 3 hrs before the event though, cuz I am not getting caught in that traffic bull.

There are two main reasons, but both have been somewhat addressed.

The NBA effectively takes the majority of tickets to the game for sponsors, etc, leaving fans of the home team sol except for the Saturday stuff. Arisen has said he is against it for this reason specifically. But now there is the option of using the 35000 seat marlins stadium with the roof closed. The two teams support each other via suites and co-promotions, with some of the marlins staff ex-heaters. The stadium has no annual booking during the usual weekend, and they have said they want to pursue NCAA sweet 16 so they are already figuring out a bball configuration.

The usual weekend of asw is presidents day. That coincides with the boat and yacht shows in Miami beach, which is a traffic nightmare and fills and inflates prices of hotels on the beach as well as the coconut grove arts show, which is also a daytime traffic snarl and uses a ton of police. They could try to get outside agencies for police, but it could be tricky. But the bigger concern is that the hotels just won't be available or be too expensive. That could be reevaluated, however, now that there are several larger new hotels downtown, like the epic, viceroy, jw Marriott, etc.

I would think, however, that Mickey may come around and try to host while we have this team, perhaps even close to their contract expirations, to make a good party and show for them and try to keep them here.

I still don't get how we've hosted TEN Super Bowls, which take place two weeks before the All-Star game but only one All-Star Game.

Stern is too busy giving All Star games to people he owes like Benson. Hey you don't want to buy the team, here first pick overall and an All Star game.
