Ray Allen contract: One year plus a player option

Sorry if this is posted elsewhere if so I couldn't find it.

The Miami Herald reports Ray Allen's contract with the Heat only spans two years, with the second year a player option. The deal was originally reported as three years. Allen is earning the mini-mid-level, worth about $3.2 million next summer, so there's a possibility he could opt out after the season and become a free agent.

I personally think the Heat made Allen this offer so If he plays well, he can opt out and Miami can give him the full MLE next summer for the next two or more years.

it was talked about in the OffSeason Free Agent thread. your idea is impossible, we wouldnt be able to give the full MLE to anyone, we're a luxury tax team.

I believe the player option is just an insurance Ray got in case he feels he doesn't fit here or things dont work out for some reason. that's a very unlikely possibility, im pretty sure he'll stay.

Well I'm 100% sure that every team is going to be on Ray's ear throughout the regular season, offering him more money than us and etc.

If he wanted Money he could have stayed in Boston or get a bigger offer from a bunch of teams. he came for cheap now just so he could chase the money next year?

Um, it's been done before. Ray Allen wouldn't be the first guy to ever do that. lol.. I hope he stays, and I think he will especially if we win the championship. But it's an option that he will have, and money talks.

I'm pretty positive Reshard will opt out for sure for more money, he could have gotten more money if he wanted but he came to Miami and will likely get mini MLE/full MLE next year from some other team.

As far as Ray goes, he had his own personal agenda against Boston which lead to him not accepting the deal. He's still going to to reside in Boston, he has business there, his wife's talk show is there, etc.

I really hope Ray stays more than one year. He has always been one of my favorite players and when he joined the Heat I couldn't stop smiling for days. I have to believe Riley and Ray have some kind of handshake agreement that if things go well this year for Ray he will stay.

I am not a salary expert but COULD MIAMI OFFER RAY MORE IF HE OPTS OUT?

Vertical you sound like Ray didnt choose us aleady

Sunday - no we can't, but i dont think we'll need to. Ray knew what he came here for. He made a ton of money already. He wants a big role on a championship team more then he wants those few extra millions.

Edit : just checked - he made 178,037,360 Mil$ just from direct basketball paychecks.

I know this sounds dumb but why couldn't we offer him more if the option is built in?

All we could offer him was the Mini MLE (3 Mil$ per a year with a slight increase for 3 years). that's because we are over the salary cap and we payed luxury tax. the option is on the second year of that original offter - the second year of his Mini MLE.

Thanks Rex. The reason I asked is when I was researching this topic online I read the Heat could give him 3.2 million. I wish I would of bookmarked the site.

right cuz contenders ( the only type of teams Ray would sign with, who also will already be luxury tax teams) will have more money to entice and commit a 39 year old Ray Allen to a multi-year deal... lol. This offseason was Ray's real last opportunity to get paid$$$ AND be on a contender and only the Celtics could offer that. No contender will be able to shell out that kind of money nor will anyone worth it be willing to sign him for that many years. Don't listen to the noise out there guys, he's here for the next couple seasons at least. End of story.

This. Confident Ray will retire a Miami Heat. Like Pat said, Ray will retire a Heat after 6 seasons 8-)

I think he'll stay. I think once you get exposed to Heat culture, loyalty--it's hard to leave.

I also think all of the Big three will stay and take a further paycut to save Mickey some bucks on the luxury tax when they have their opt out years.

The atmosphere of sacrifice on this team is unlike any team I've ever seen. These guys didn't come together for money. They came together to challenge history. And I don't think anyone will want to leave until it's "mission accomplished"
