Rockets Waive Sean Williams, Heat May Be Interested

Post#1 » by JahBody » Wed Aug 29, 2012 4:53 pm

The Houston Rockets have waived Sean Williams.
Williams was acquired from the Boston Celtics during July's Courtney Lee sign-and-trade.
Williams' salary for the 12-13 season would have become fully guaranteed had he not been waived before Aug. 30th. The Miami Heat have expressed interest in Williams in the past and remain interested in signing a big.

Is this guy any good? Drawing a blank here on the name. I seem to remember some scrub on the Nets bench with the same name.

Athletic shot Blocker. Little offense! I think we should wait til trade deadline or close! There will be salary dumps and creativity is important! There were numerous buyouts this year.

Funny you guys don't remember this guy, since he has historically played well against us in every team he's been on. He's a big who can run, jump, block and finish. He's got some attitude problems though, so may be an issue there. Who knows? Maybe he has matured enough overseas for the attitude to not give Riles pause.

He'd be a solid pickup.

He destroyed Beasley in their first summer league. He's bounced around a lot because of off the court issues and not reaching his potential.

There are a couple of us who have wanted this guy on the Heat for years.

Much more use than Pittman and even more use than Joel.

Bring him Home riley

Those highlights were awesome! He has good hands it seems and blocks shots inbounds. That is at least 6 more points a game. I think we should get him!!!!

Williams had huge potential but his stock fell when he was kicked out of school for substance abuse. He is a pothead or was or whatever. He never really had any major incidents in the NBA and never reached near his potential. Its likely still there as far as skill but he needs alot of work and then there is the weed, I dont think that ever goes away. Hes a tough guy that hasnt realized when to chill. If we cant get anything better then Williams would not be a bad pickup for minimum. He is athletic and having Haslem and Mourning around will give him two ppl that can help shape and control him. I think Haslem would be the person he clicks with most as he doesnt get along with Diva types.

HIF is right we have been throwing this guys name around for years so I think most of us are open to the idea.

I remember Michael Beasley singing like a goofball during his first summer league game with us.

I remember Michael Beasley being defended by an irritated Sean Williams in his second summer league game with us.

I remember Sean Williams smothering Michael Beasley and forcing him to go 1-13.

I'll take him. If he throws any fits or acts up, buh-bye.

Haha, forgot about the singing. The Bulls (I think it was) hated that. I remember Chalmers outplaying the hell out of Rose, too. "I was singing a happy song, because I was happy." I knew we were in for an adventure after reading that quote. Believe it was "Mountains" or something by Usher, he claimed.

Beasley just was not ready for athleticism and length of Sean's variety. Sort of signaled his upcoming experience as an NBA 4, though.

And in my last post I forgot to say: I fully consent to signing Williams. Regardless of offensive skill, I've been feeling like an athletic big off the bench is missing from our lineup (other than Joel, whose athleticism is diminishing). Sean can get a few buckets off the ball. Hard to tell what kind of rebounder he is, though. His numbers have been all over the place each season with inconsistent PT.

He's a bigger headcase than Blatche.

Used to be. I think he's ahead of Blatche's curve, though.

From draftexpress:

January 17, 2011
Matt Kamalsky

Former first round draft pick Sean Williams had a solid week on the floor, but the feedback we heard about him off it may have caught our attention most. On the court, Williams remains the same highly athletic defensive presence that he was in the college game, but word is that Williams has been a model citizen off the court for the Texas Legends. Becoming a first-to-arrive, last-to-leave type, Williams seems to have matured past the issues he had off the floor in the past to focus on his basketball career.

An effective complementary scorer thanks to his length and athleticism, Williams still hasn't developed a terribly polished post repertoire. However, he has shown that he hasn't lost a step as a rebounder and shot blocker. Whether he's rotating over from the weakside, defending the midrange, or crashing the boards, Williams makes an impact with his physical tools and energy. A top-call up candidate due to his terrific combination of size, athleticism, length and shot-blocking ability, Williams will earn himself a roster spot in the NBA sooner rather than later if he can continue to make good decisions off the floor.

Anyone remember when he puked on court with the Mavs last season? That's so Heat. Sell out til you vomit.

I wouldn't mind if the Heat picked him up, he looks like a decent rebounder, or at least better than Joel and he's probably close to as good as Joel on the defensive end. I agree about Joel though SmushedPennies, I thought I was the only one who noticed that his athleticism seems to be declining. Especially with players like Joel, whose best attribute are activity and quickness, they don't tend to have long careers. Really wish we didn't sign him to such a long contract back in 2010.

Yeah, he's 30 now. People forget he's the same age as Dwyane because some still look at him as a developing player. I remember his rookie year, the XX season, he was catching and throwing down lobs like a monster. You never see that nowadays. His shotblocking has clearly been affected: His block % has gone from 7.2 his second year, to 5.1 this past year (6.7 then 5.0 in between). This could be attributed to more of a focus on team and one on one D, but I think the theory passes the eye test.

I still think Joel's contract will be fair for what he can provide. C's get overpaid, no matter what. Even with diminished athleticism he's still a smart player on D who hustles to offensive boards and sets great screens. His offensive game could continue improving.

Lateral quickness is one of the first things to go though and that's his main calling card(P&R defense). Once his quickness goes, he'll become pretty much useless. We have him for 3 more seasons, I believe, and can you imagine a 32 year old Joel being paid $3.8 million(more if you include the luxury tax payments) with less quickness, and athleticism? What will he even be able to do? I can't recall any competitors for Joel's services in 2010, so why did we pay him so much and for so long, too? Not a good contract at all. He's not really a Center either, more like a Power Forward masquerading as a Center.

Though he just turned 30, Joel only has 6,751 minutes (regular season + playoffs combined) on his body over 5 seasons. With the limited minutes he's asked to provide, I'm guessing he's got enough tread on his tires to keep up his active style of play for a while.

Good points Chalmy. Maybe we can find a way to dump him before then (sorry Warden.) They were handing out some nice contracts in 2010 after the Decision excitement. Some unwise minor moves were certainly made that summer after the explosion of joy.

Yeah he'll stay active, Mars, but Chalm made a good point about lateral quickness. When that really starts to go he's boned.
