Proof that Jordan is a better playmaker than lebron

Post#1 » by clarkkent23 » Mon Dec 17, 2012 1:15 am

Lately I've been hearing that Lebron is a better passer than MJ but students of the game who look at it analytically knows its not necessarily true, being a facilitator and knowing how to run an offense is not the same as being a true playmaker and people get those two mixed up. Lebron was a more willing passer at times than Jordan but not a better passer because Jordan was more instinctive which lead to quicker decison making, where lebrons strengths is running an offense and being the main facilitator. When u watch lebron play at times u could kind of see the thought process going on in lebrons head and guess who he was going to pass it too.The greatest stat u can look at to see how effective someone is at passing is looking at the assist to turnover ratio where Jordan has 6 seasons of 2:1 and a 2.5:1 Jordan ranks 17th alltime in TO% and everybody ahead of him other than dirk where mainly spot up shooters and lets not forget when Michael did play point guard for like 30 games he averaged 10.4 assist a game and even out assisted magic a couple times during the championship and averaged 11.4 that series.
All time TO%
1. Michael Redd 8.30
2. Kerry Kittles 8.31
3. Mike Mitchell 8.39
4. Harvey Grant 8.41
5. Antawn Jamison 8.46
6. Wesley Person 8.53
7. Peja Stojakovic 8.57
8. Jeff Malone 8.69
9. Kiki Vandeweghe 8.87
10. Shawn Marion 8.94
11. Dirk Nowitzki 8.96
12. Michael Finley 9.01
13. Sam Mitchell 9.07
14. Morris Peterson 9.11
15. Trent Tucker 9.12
16. Dennis Scott 9.13
17. Michael Jordan 9.34
18. Tayshaun Prince 9.34
19. Lucious Harris 9.43
20. Glen Rice 9.48

Jordan great passing highlights

That was a nice story.

How about you take your thread to the GB or the Bulls forum, no one on this board has mentioned Jordan nor compared the two. They're two different players that play different positions and obviously as of now, Michael is still far more accomplished than Lebron.

I wouldn't look at just turnover percentage to come to this conclusion. Jordan played the majority of his career in the triangle, which is a system that doesn't rely on one guy initiating and creating everything. Compare that to the constant ballhandling and PnR's that LeBron has to go through, and of course his turnover numbers will suffer a bit. When LeBron took over those responsibilities from Wade, surprise, Wade's turnover numbers decreased.

The one year Jordan played in a system very similar to what LeBron has been in basically since he came into the league, he had a TOV% of over 11%. That was the year he basically played PG and had his 8APG season. That number is very consistent with the TOV% of 11-12% that LeBron is around pretty much every season.

Also, A:T ratio and TOV% are useful tools, but far from end-all, be-all stats for deciding who is the better playmaker. Magic Johnson was almost always near, and occasionally over a 20% TOV%, and I'm sure you can find a number of high-level PG's in league history with a better A:T ratio and TOV% than he had. Does that mean they were better playmakers? No.

When watching both LeBron and Jordan play, the difference in their playmaking abilities is LeBron's vision. A lot of that is due to his height, and it enables him to make crisp, cross-court passes constantly that very few players in league history could make. He also always puts the ball right on point when making passes...right into the shooting pocket, bounces passes to players in stride cutting to the rim, etc.. And with how much he handles the ball, not just to make plays for himself but also for others, he is extremely efficient in taking care of the ball.

Both guys are/were sensational playmakers, but I feel LeBron is just a little more naturally gifted in that regards.

Thanks for your analytical insight on the two, u made a lot of sense and could be right but if u think about the fact that after phil came in and implemeted the triangle in that equal opportunity offense jordan was still able to average close to 6 assist a game with another guy nammed pippen getting over 6 assist a game and point guards getting 3 to 4 assist a game its truley a amazing and just based on the eye test jordan is better at improvising, lebron may be better at running an offense but that does mean he is a better playmaker . watch the video I posted for 3 minutes and u will see passes lebron can never make

Aspects of passing Jordan was better at than lebron.
1.Passing when driving to the lane.
2.Interior passing.
3.Outlet passes after rebounds jordan threw lasers to Grant and Pippen.
4.Passing out of a shot.

lebron probably better at
1.Coming down court with the ball and setting up the offense
2.Throwing alley oops (only cause I've seen him do it more)
3.Bounce passes lebron is clearly better
