Mario Chalmers KU jersey retired

Mario Chalmers became the 28th former Kansas basketball player to have his jersey number retired Saturday as his No. 15 jersey was hung up in the rafters of Phog Allen Fieldhouse during halftime of the Jayhawks’ game against Texas this weekend.

“It’s something you always hope for,” Chalmers said. “It was one of my dreams growing up, to leave my mark at every school I went to. One of them happened to be Kansas. I’m glad I was able to do that.”

This probably doesn't mean much to those of us who only watch the NBA but his game-tying shot at KU in 08 will probably end up being the most memorable moment of his career. Congrats Mario! :)

Mario won me $500 with that shot. I picked Kansas to win the tournament that year and won the pool I was entered in because of it. Never thought he'd end up on the Heat.

Also, wasn't there some poll on Kansas' website where the majority of people didn't want Chalmers' number retired? Either way, good for him.

I've never wanted to punch someone in the face so badly. Really hoping to run into him at a game one day. I won't hesitate.

Funny his banner is right next to another former Heat - Wayne Simien.

I read that a lot of KU alum didn't want his jersey retired in a poll on their Newspaper...vast majority voted no.

Um not trying to sound like a homer but Chalmer's resume far surpasses Simien and Simien had his number retired.

Chalmers has a lot more collegiate accolades, personal and team, than Simien. That's just facts right there.

Chalmers must have been a douche around campus and probably not liked by his his peers. Which wouldn't shock me if that influenced the votes. He is a douche, there's no denying that.

Big fan of Chalmers aka Mr. Clutch! I'm glad to see he's having his jersey retired.

Personally , the first thing that came to my mind is that he played for the Heat and people there don't like the Heat.

What did Chalmers do/say to make people not like him? I can only think of like his ego/delusions and that one time him and Beasley were hanging out. Or his play on the court.

Yeah... it might have to do with him playing for the Heat if people didn't want his jersey retired.

I mean that shot in 2008 wasn't the game winner but tied it and they won, aren't they grateful for that?!

Mario is a champion now, not only in Kansas or his high school, but as an NBA player.

I don't see why people didn't want his jersey retired, other than him playing for the Heat.

Unless yeah he was a douche on campus or something lol.

That's the biggest shot in Kansas basketball history, and easily the biggest shot I've seen in a championship game in my lifetime (wasn't around for Jordan's, but I'll still take Chalmers' given the difficulty and time running out.)

I'd go so far as to say one of the biggest shots in basketball history, period.

This video always gives me chills:

Bunch of petty morons if they didn't want his jersey retired.

Not to mention Chalmers was the Most Outstanding Player of that tournament, which is equivalent to Finals MVP. He had a great tournament. But that's how Chalmers always has been, great in the postseason, not so great in the regular season.

How can any Heat fan not like a guy who hit a big shot over the draft pick that was stolen from us by David Stern just so he can prop up that dying cash-cow they call Chicago.

I don't see it either, but I've come to realize there are plenty of ungrateful fans in sports, like (for ex) Laker fans hating on Shaq as if the guy didn't win them 3 titles.

@Vertical Limit: why is it you think Chalmers is a douchebag?

My friends met him personally at some party he was hosting in some club a few years ago. The guy was a douche to all of them, and he's very full of himself. Looks at everyone as if they're peasants.

But it's what ever, he's a douche amongst douche's in this league, not talking about our team but the NBA in general has a bunch of personalities like Chalmers. I have another friend who went to the same high school as CP3 in NC and the stories he has told me makes Chalmers look like an angel.

Yeah I think a lot of athletes are douchebags in that sense. I just thought Chalmers did something to make himself stand out from the rest.
