Philly's pick is looking good right now...

Does anyone know how protected this pick is? Usually GM's will put a top 5 protection on it, or some even lottery protecting it completely. But with the Sixers looking good last year, then getting Bynum, adding Dorrel, Jason Richardson & Nick Young, I can totally see their GM pulling an Isiah Thomas & not protecting it at all cuz he assumed they'd make the playoffs. At first I was thinking waving that pick might've been the only way to find a taker for JA's contract (assuming they want to unload him still). But Philly's 12 games under, got embarrassed on their floor by Orlando the other day & the Raps are only getting better. So I kinda see them out, which brings me to my next question: is this years class as deep as they're saying it is? People say that so often. I've been out of the college loop for 2-3 years now (still watch the madness), but people are saying like 15 teams can win it this year. That has to say something about this class coming out. Maybe we'll get lucky. I hope Riles doesn't sell the pick if the 1st rd $ costs them double or triple for being over the cap.

1. Philly pick is lottery protected (top 14)

2. This draft isn't deep on franchise talent, but there are solid role players to be had

3. Next year's draft will be a gold mine....more interested in having a pick then

It's lottery protected so unless they make the playoffs as the 8th seed, we're not getting it. But yeah, next year will be more interesting.

With Bynum's inability to get healthy, the Sixers may not even re-sign him. In that case, they could very well be a lotto team the next two years as well. Not pleased with the element of the deal where if they fail to make the playoffs for three years, instead of getting an unprotected first, we only get two second round picks from them. Hadn't seen that kinda deal before. Extra incentive for them to just continue sucking.

Luckily none of PJIII, Moultrie, or Ezeli are doing a damn thing.

I wouldn't mind getting a 17-20 type of pick, even though every time we're around mid to late 1st round, we strike out more times than not.

We're not going to have any picks this year unless we buy a second round pick (hoping we do, i see some prospects worth adding).

Hopefully Philly bounces back next year and we'll have 2, our own and their.

We may never get it as a first rounder. Their team is a mess now.

Especially if Doug Collins leaves, he seems like he's getting frustrated with them. If the front office really sees Jarvis as a cheaper Joel Anthony & want to unload his contract, then we might as well pair that pick with JA to get someone to take him for cap relief.

I wouldn't mind getting rid of Jeol. I know he tries hard and is good in bursts but is doesn't make the cut for this team. If Riley is committed to his vision of 3 years center, it's time to axe him come next season.

We won't get to pick in the first round this year (Philly sucks) and I'm fine with it. Next year we'll have a chance to grab a big potential in the gold mine that is 2014 NBA Draft.

Yet on another thread you want to sign Juwan Howard?! Because he brings so much to the table.

I can honestly see some more teams wanting to sell late first round picks than usual because of the new rules. Hopefully Mickey opens up the checkbook.

As others have mentioned weak year for picks though.

When people say this draft is weak it's true in the sense that there arn't any real franchise players or super promising Allstar level prospects. But that's irrelevant to us anyway, A)we're not drafting in the lottery and B)we dont really need another allstar. We need good, cheap, young role players. and there are enough of those in this year's draft. like in most drafts. And honestly this year is decently deep in that aspect.

I disagree with you there Rex. The lack of top end talent does affect the depth because some of that depth gets slid up the draft and it has a cascading effect.

Look at Mclemore. With a lot of top end talent he slides way down. Without it he is a top 3 pick and now whoever would have picked him picks a lower level player who would have been picked later and it keeps snowballing from there.

The only way to combat that is to have significantly more role players than usual and I don't think that's the case. I think before the draft there is always extra optimism that players can at least become roleplayers but then the season comes along and many of them fail to do so.

Doubt they try to suck just so they dont have to give up a mid first. They have too much young talent to miss the playoffs that many years in a row in the east. I actually really like our chances of the move getting us a solid pick in a much better draft next year. But dont be dissapointed when we get rid of the pick anyway. I Dont think Riley cares much about the draft when we Dont have a top 10 pick. If he wasn't so damn good at his job I'd really hate that about him.

I can't believe the alternate realities that some fans live in.

This team is not in position to develop "prospects" and second round picks. That's what lottery teams do: give a lot of minutes to young players to see who pans out and who doesn't. A championship team doesn't have time for that. Because it's focused on winning a championship.

I know most fans LOVE prospects and picks and potential and all that, and I HATE it. Because it's illogical. They overrate players who barely manage to get off the bench and expect them to become at least solid role players. They overrate role players and expect them to become stars. And they overrate 3rd, 4th and 5th bananas and expect them to become superstars.

Considering that out of 30 2nd round picks every year, you probably get a REALLY good player once every 8-10 years (Manu, Arenas), and a decent role player every 2-3 years at best, I'd say: let's be more realistic.

A decent role player every 2-3 years?Just stop.

2012:Jae Crowder and Draymond Green are rotation players on good teams.
2011:Chandler Parsons and Isiah Thomas
2010:Landry Fields and Lance Stephenson
2009: DaJuan Blair, Jonas Jorebko,Danny Green,Chase Budinger and Jodie Meeks.
2008:Mario Chalmers,Deandre Jordan,Omer Asik,Mbah a Moute,Goran Dragic and Bill Walker.
2007:Carl Landry,Glen Davis,Marc Gasol,Ramon Sessions.
2006:Steve Novak, Daniel Gibson, Paul Milsap, Leon Powe.
2005:Amir Johnson,Monta Ellis,Marcin Gortat,Brandon Bass,Ersan Ilyasova.

I could go on and on.Almost every single draft produces a decent role player or 2 and sometimes a few all stars. There is a difference between being realistic and being negative.

Have you ever heard about Norris Cole, genius? he was drafted 2 picks ahead of a second rounder.
