Post#1 » by bogutisabust » Sun Apr 14, 2013 2:14 am

If you have to interact with the customers, you're probably gonna be required to speak spanish. Other than that, you'll have no problem getting a job.

This is obviously trolilng, but on the off chance there's a real question here, there are plenty of opportunities in Fort Lauderdale that will be less-dependent on being bilingual

This is a serious question im in my forties now and plan to retire or atleast semi retire at age 50 and although im a bucks fan, i have no desire to remain in wisconsin the winters are too cold and way to long i dont need to see snow 6 months out of the year and want to be somewhere where i can be more active, its very hard to do anything outside when its 20 degrees and yes im fully aware of the whoop ass thats going to take place next week it will be the biggest upset in the history of the nba playoffs

There are some places that not knowing a lick of Spanish (or some other language) will make things difficult. You probably won't live in those areas if you are coming to retire. Otherwise most people will be able to speak/understand English just fine (this doesn't mean they won't be speaking Spanish). Also the further north you go from Miami the less an issue this is. I will say that I have been to Home Depots/Lowes down here with employees that either don't speak any English or any Spanish. If they need help communicating they have plenty of coworkers to turn to.

That said, if I ran some retail store and had one job with two potential candidates. One speaks only one language and the other is bilingual, all other things being equal I would take the bilingual person as that person would be more qualified for the job in this area. So why not use this opportunity to learn a new language? :) you don't have to be an expert but some basic understanding can go a long way.

that is an option for sure to learn a new language i must say it did remind me of when i was in the military and was in italy man it was tough to just get something to eat, the problem is my wife really liked the area and i also did. i also noticed that at the arena and south beach there isnt a problem at all with the language barrier

I'm shocked by the answers given to you. The occupation you're looking for is in retail, the real answer is yes you can after a very lengthy search, but 95% chance you won't be chosen over a person who speaks Spanish fluently. Spanish is a higher standard over a college degree to a lot of businesses here in Miami. Obviously I'm not talking about the medical field or construction, but as far as customer service, retail, sales, hell even accounting. Those type of jobs are easy to train anyone in it, so they see a spanish speaker and they'll work with that person.

You should look up in Broward or Palm Beach County...you might have an easier time not knowing any Spanish.

Bogut, nothing wrong with the question. Like one said earlier, your options will be limited if you can not speak spanish. A lot will depend on the career you are looking for. If you have to communicate with the local community then you have very little chance to get a job, unless you network and you know someone personally to get a job. Also, the pay here is lower compared to most cities and the cost of living is higher. So make sure you do your research before you make a major move. Coming to realgm to get this info is not a smart move.
