Dwyane Wade, an explosive finisher and one of the most dangerous scorers in the NBA, has paid the price for his physical style of play.

As he looks ahead to the 2013-14 season and his Miami Heat chasing a third consecutive NBA championship, the Miami Heat guard understands that his game will have to change.

"The older you get, the less you want to go inside and get banged around," Wade told USA TODAY Sports. "So I want to be more of a consistent outside shooter."

The 30-year old played through knee injuries all season and into the playoffs, resulting in inconsistent play in the postseason. The San Antonio Spurs saw him as such a non-threat that they often completely ignored him on the perimeter.

"I just want to be a little more comfortable behind the arc," Wade said. "I know this year I didn't shoot as many threes, so if I have to, I want to be more confident in it."

Even with these adjustments Wade plans to make in his game, he understands that the Heat's latest title was a team effort. LeBron James was MVP in the seven-game win vs. the Spurs and Wade had 23 in that Game 7 win, it was the play of unheralded players who helped carry them to the title.

Shane Battier, Mike Miller and Mario Chalmers played key rolls in the playoffs and Finals alongside the Big Three. But according to Wade, no role player was more crucial to Miami's championship run than midseason signee Chris "Birdman" Andersen.

"When Birdman came to the team, he really changed the (center) position and gave us that athletic guy who could finish, could block shots, just did a lot of great things for us," Wade said. "Without him, I don't know if we would have been able to win a championship."

Who will be this year's Birdman? Wade doesn't know, but he says there's always room for improvement, even for a two-time defending champion.

"You always try to see if you can add something throughout the year," Wade said. "We added Birdman this year and Ray Allen over the summer and Shane Battier the summer before, so you never know. Right now I think we're a good team, but you're always looking to get better."

Even if they aren't able to add another impact player, Wade is still confident about the Heat's chances at a three-peat.

"I think we have a pretty good team," he said. "If we come back with the same team, we'll be pretty good."

Sweet....

He said he'd hire a shooting coach and work on his jumper last year I think but I don't think he got around doing it, so I hope he really puts in the time and is very driven in improving his Jumper this offseason'

He actually did do that.

Better late then never.

He didnt really have enough time to work on it last offseason with the knee procedure.

If Dwyane can become a decent consistent out side shooter our spacing will improve immediately.

I believe.

I'd love for this to happen, him having a solid jump shot doesnt only help him out it spreads the floor even more for LeBron. Could be a huge improvement for the team.

If Ason Kidd can become a deadly shooter, ANYYTHHHHHINNGG IS POSSIBLLLLLLLEE.

But it's good to see introspective Wade again. This is a contract year for him, I expect him to put a lot of work in the postseason.

Aside of improved spacing for our team, this could help him avoid injuries a lot. His knee issues in the past two seasons were mainly caused by banging his knees a lot. LeBron managed to become a better outside shooter in order to improve our spacing and preserve his body at the same time, so Wade should too. I'm fine with both of these guys attacking less in the regular season and relying on their jump shots and save the crashing style of playing for the playoffs.

Work on your balance, get rid of your fadeaway habits and improvement will show up. He needs to understand all those fadeaways is making it much more difficult to have a high percentage angle of the ball to the rim.

Yeah he did and the results were pretty good for the most part. Like I said numerous of times, injuries has plagued his skillset towards the end. However, Wade's J in Game 7 of the Finals was 2006-like.

I hope he takes those words to heart

What a relief.

I thought Wade was hoping to come back weaker an with a worse jumpshot but this puts my worries to rest.

I don't think he will ever be a great shooter (his hands are too big) but he can definitely improve

Wade has the jumper in him, he has shown in the past to have it. But for whatever reason in the last 3 years, he has gone away from the mid range. Wade during his prime, he would come up and kill you with his mid-range which opened up his drive to the paint. Recently when his jumper isn't falling, he rely on the post, which is good vs. small guards but in the last few years his man defending him is bigger(George,Deng,Leaward..) which eliminates his post game

look at his form in this video. going straight up/no fading, leg kick. just a very nice form and elevation.
he needs to go back to doing that. he also used to have a killer bank shot. what happened???

aslo it helps that he has workaholic ray allen (best shooter ever) if he needs some help

Jordan had huge hands too and he had a nice midrange shot. I don't think Wade will ever be a 40% 3 point shooter but he needs to knock down 15-18 footers at a higher rate.

D-Wade hitting jumpers from mid-range opens up the game for us drastically. A prime example was Game 7 of this year's Finals.

Wade needs to work on his mid range game, and staying healthy.

I've heard this before. I seriously doubt he'll spend extra hard time working on his outside shooting. If he was as workaholic as MJ and Kobe when it comes to improving his game, he'd have a greater chance of staying healthy comes playoffs time.

remember how hard he worked to come back after the 07-08 season. arguably his worst?

he had that epic olympics run and then had a mvp season in 08-09. this was after people clamoring that after the injury he wasnt going to be the same. hopefully he can have a repeat (mentality wise)
