How did Rose win MVP over James?

Post#1 » by Heatin4 » Wed Sep 4, 2013 5:15 pm

With that year in mind was it really a blow out decision for Rose to get it or was James really slammed for not getting it that year?

Well I think that it had to do a lot with that fact that it was the year Lebron left Cleveland and at that point there was still a lot of hate from the fanbase towards him.

Not to mention Rose led his team to the best overall record in the East that year, but statistically speaking Lebron's stat line was better and more balanced than Rose that year.

But there has been a history in the league that the team with the best overall record, the best player on that team gets the MVP,2008-2009 is a perfect example of D.Wade being snubbed MVP over James.

The media was pissed that LeBron left Cleveland and also the manner in which he did it, I really think thats the only reason.

Dwight should have won.

Well...5 seed showed stats don't always translate to wins (though it was quite the jump from the previous year). Not sure you could really call 09' a snub though.

Both James and Dwight were strong candidates in 2011 but Rose had a career year, top seed, and the story line to match. Everything just fell in place for him.

tbh... Rose deserved it that year.

Although Lebron turned out to be superior in their playoff duel.

It's a decision that makes less sense in hindsight. Lebron and the Heat were all over the place, Lebron was giving up the rock to Wade in late game situations (he was still viewed as not clutch by pundits) and the Heat started the first half the season very poorly. Bulls on the other hand dominated from the start to finish and Rose had critical huge games and delivered for the Bulls when they need buckets at the end of games to win.

By all accounts Bulls were the East favorite going into the playoffs, and many contended Rose might be the new "it" guy with Lebron's label as not only a loser who had to join 2 other superstars but hated for bailing on his home city/collusion. Dwight was dealing with similar issues of being hated and also viewed as not a leader, but rather a drama queen who racks up techs that hurt his team. Rose was the golden boy, with the best record, and little to pick at except shooting issues.

In retrospect, especially after the 2011 Finals fiasco, the turn around to where we are now has been nothing short of amazing for Lebron and the Heat.

Thats a lot of rambling you just did. How does it make less sense in hindsight?

You don't win an MVP a year prior because you won a title a year later? The outcome was the outcome and Rose got it...

The real question is, how did he win it over Howard. I'm not a fan of the guy, but he should've been MVP over both Rose and James.
As for all the people saying Wade should've won it in 08/09, that's non-sense. His supporting cast was walking trash, but that doesn't matter. It's stats and wins that do. But to claim his stats didn't translate into wins in 08/09 is a stupid statement. The squad we put around him was one of the worst you'll see around a player of his caliber in his prime. I always laughed at those who complained about Howard's or James' supporting casts that year.

This is asked every year man.

Rose's team was phenomenal and he did have his best year.

LeBron made the Heat better and helped us get to the Finals, but no way in hell was he going to be given any respect by anyone after The Decision.

LeBron had to earn everyone's respect, and 2 years later, 2 more MVP's and 2 more rings, with TWO Final MVP's.

I think it's funny people said LeBron couldn't and shouldn't have won the MVP with Wade and Bosh on the team. Then BAM he gets it back to back.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rose or Carmelo gets the MVP this year though, all their team has to do is finish top 2 in the East with a couple of win streaks and beating us. Popularity also helps those win MVP's. Rose is also coming back, it would make for a great story. #TheReturn lmao.

It was the year of Hate.

Riley had to share the Executive of the year award too.

That was the far bigger travesty that year, if I was a Bulls fan I'd be embarrassed about that one.

Rose, eh, I really don't have a huge issue with it, the award is a combination of wins, storyline and personal excellence and Rose scored high enough in all 3 categories. Howard was lacking wins, LeBron was lacking storyline.

Rose would have to have a hell of a year... and I don't see NYK doing enough for Melo to win. I'm leaning towards someone out West taking it this season... Probably Durant or Chris.

I had zero problem with Rose winning the MVP. There is a long track record of clearly the best player on the team with the best regular season record getting it, even if other players had better individual stats. There's been a lot of recent yammering by fans who probably started watching the NBA in the last decade or so stating the award should be for whose team sucks more without player X, even if that team doesn't have one of the top records. Like Bird, Magic and MJ were surrounded by scrubs when they were racking up multiple MVPs. See Melo's vote this year. That's a flawed argument in my opinion. LeBron had just as much to do with the Heat's accomplishments during the last regular season as any other player did for their teams reaching whatever level they hit. MVP should be an award of accomplishment, not one of keeping a team from the lottery or a bottom playoff seed.

If a team has a player who is clearly the best on the roster and they have the best regular season record, that player should get the MVP barring some unworldly performance like MJ's scoring title and DPOY season.

Hard to win an MVP when you've got another candidate on your own team who IMO had a stronger season than the actual MVP did (and was probably ever bit as good as Lebron was that year, granted less consistent but more explosive).
But in his home dwelling...the hi-top faded warrior is revered. *Smack!* The sound of his palm blocking the basketball... the sound of thousands rising, roaring... the sound of "get that sugar honey iced tea outta here!"
