Cole wants to be a starter

Interesting article. I do think Cole is a starting PG in this league and this team will have an interesting dilemma moving forward if the team resigns Chalmers. I don't envision Cole settling for a backup role in the prime years of his career.
"I see that but I'm sure they wish they wish were in my situation, too," Cole said. "It's great other guys get to start who I feel I'm just as good or better than but at the end of the day, winning is what counts. I'm sure if they were smart players, I'm sure they would take winning [a] championship more than playing a lot and not winning."
"I definitely want to be a starter," Cole said. "But I understand that you have to be patient, put your work in. You don't want anything given to you. You want to earn it. It's working right now. We're winning. I enjoy winning more than individual things. I'm fine with us winning but eventually the more I continue to get better, the more I developed, I think things will happen the way they're supposed to happen."
"It was the same thing in college," said Cole, who played at Cleveland State. "I didn't start as a freshman and I ended up being one of the best players my school has ever seen. I've always had to be patient and work and work and once I got my chance, I took it. The same thing here, I work and keep working and eventually I'll get a chance to show what I can do."

Dare I say it, as far as homegrown players Cole could end up being one of the real greats for this franchise. He's hard working, improves every year, and I really hope we find a way to hang on to him beyond next season. One of my favorites to watch on the team.

I read that earlier and I'm not sure what to make of it. A year down from now we're probably going to be able to keep only one of Rio and Cole.

Which is a shame they're the best bang for the buck combo you could ask for at point.

Damn and we say we don't draft and develop young talent. The bad part of success.
I can see Cole being better than Mario. Cole has a better BBIQ from what I see.

I'm sure that if Cole starts to significantly outperform Rio we'll just bench Rio. It's not like they both won't get playing time still. Most likely Rio will be resigned by that point too so it's not like he'll be going anywhere. I don't really see this as a problem. There's not a super hot market for PGs at the moment, certainly not ours (though they fit our system well).

Cole is signed through next season. If he's still coming off the bench he very well could take his talents elsewhere, especially if a team offers a nice contract. And who could blame him, he's put in the work if he wants to go somewhere and play the 30 mins a game that'd be his right.

If Cole could play SG he would just have to wait 3-5 years till he gets the starting position of Wade maybe less then that and I'm not talking about Wade retiring I'm talking about Wade coming off the bench like the Spurs did to Manu so Wade's career could be extended.

It's normal that he wants to start, he has been improving every year and he is a very mature player and a real profesional at his age, tough guy who plays hard every night.
Rio has been doing pretty good this year too, streaky as always but he definetly looks more agressive.
I wouldnt give cole the start cuz Rio would get frustrated and there goes part of the chemistry.
The Heat will have to figure out how to solve it the next year.

We have Cole signed this season and next season and then as long as we make him a $3M qualifying offer he'll be a restricted free agent. As long as we're willing to pay what the market bears at that point, we could likely keep him through his prime (he's already 25). It's pretty clear from what he said that this won't be an issue this year and given that Mario is a free agent, that might be the end of it. It's good that he's ambitious but any tension about starting and PT is a long ways off, if it ever happens.

this is great. if rio doesnt take what we give him, let him walk and just draft a PG.

Work on your playmaking, Cole. You are every bit a player of Rio, if not, better than him in certain areas. If you get playmaking down and develop true PG instincts, you will be decidedly better than Rio and deserve the starting position. If Cole stays this consistent this season, don't be surprised to see him get more minutes than Rio in the Playoffs.

You can tell by guys like Cole what our scouting staff look for in young men. They've done a great job, with some of our draft picks and signings.

My point was that Rio isn't going anywhere, not Cole. We sign Cole, we give him the starting position, and we could just let Rio walk or we could sign him and bench him (or maybe he stays a step ahead of cole, who knows). Either way, I don't see this being a huge problem since there's not a huge market for our PGs at the moment so the prices could very well be within our range to keep them both.

I think Cole has better chemistry with the big 3. Sure, Cole tend to make a few mistakes from time to time and isn't really a good passer, but he knows when to give the ball up to LeBron or Wade at the right time unlike Chalmers. The big 3 are always mad at Chalmers because of his constant boneheaded plays and fouls.
