Miami is great in all the right spots if you are in the downtown area/ bayside.
South Beach/ Bayside and Coconut grove. Be careful its not all Palm trees down there.
Best bet is to go to South Beach, great eye candy, food and drinks. Can be a bit pricey but Ocean Drive would be a good chill place for a few hours.

you cannot really get around using public transit...better of renting a car. if you were staying in the downtown area exclusively than i guess you could take buses.. i would not recommend this

I definitely recommend renting a car as well. The transit is okay, there is the metrorail as well besides the buses but that's too much waiting around. Also because it's December doesn't mean it's cold outside... it's still a little hot here, especially during noonish time, so you'll be in the hot sun waiting for crap. Try and get a rental car.

Also a taxi from airport to south beach might be about about 40 bucks. 35-45 range to be safer.

Yeah scratch downtown from your list. There is nothing downtown unless you like bank buildings. Trust me, I work downtown and it sucks. Sorry, just being born and raised here I don't want to give you the impression that downtown is representative of Miami - pretty nice skyline to drive past at night, but that's it.

You definitely want to go to South Beach. Since you are probably going into the port of Miami you won't be that far and a Taxi might not be too expensive. Once you get there, Ocean drive is nice, Lincoln Road has lots of restaurants. There's lots to see there if you just want to walk around. I am not sure what kind of public transit they have at the beach -- they definitely have it, but I always go by car.

There are some nice places in Brickell and heavy cranes around there at the moment. Go to South Beach if you like the club scene, or Coconut Grove if you like the bar scene.

I was in Miami on holidays in April and didn't have any issues with public transport really. We were on Collins Ave and got buses to and from AAA for playoff games, to Ventura Mall and down into South Beach.

There is a bus that goes from a few blocks north of the port over to Lincoln Road and into South Beach. It's like $2 or something.

Thanks for the input everyone. Appreciate it

I will be in Miami about 8 hours and this is the planned itenary:

Start with Breakfast at Front Porch Cafe
Miami Walking Tour: Art Deco District
Explore Lincoln Road Mall
Have Lunch at Balans or Spris
Go Window shopping at Collins and Washington Ave
Take cab back to airport

Due to time limitations, I will be spending all my time in South Beach. Taking South Beach Local Shuttle or Swoop Miami to get around.

Your feedback is appreciated
