Michael Beasley's Defense

As a Beasley fan, it's been tough watching the ups-and-downs in his career. And at the time of this post, right after having a respectable start good enough to get his contract this year guaranteed - it's been tough lately. His past 6-ish games have been disappointing. It's gotten to the point where when he's not scoring, he's basically useless out there. And since the Raptors game where he scored 17, he's struggled on both sides - and he's not getting playing time cuz of that D. Which is a shame because if you remember the Hawks game in December, Spo put him in a crucial defensive possession. That was promising but he still looks lost out there sadly right now.

We all love to see him succeed and be on the floor out there for experience helpful for his development, but he has to bring it. I'm honestly still puzzled how a player with his physical tools struggle this much on D and the rotations of the Heat defensive scheme. Effort is not even questionable IMO, it's just that he simply can't play instinctive defense and if you can't play that, then no minutes for you. It's not even lack of trying like his first stint. Compare his D now back then and it's not even close, but it still needs work. He won't be getting any consistent minutes long enough to stay on the floor without it. And like I said in the Bobcats GT, I've accepted at this point that unless he's in one of those games where he's in B-Easy mode making scoring look easy enough to cover and make up for his defense, he won't be sniffing playing time.

What can he do to improve on it? Is there still hope for Beasley on defense? Is Spo handling this well? Or does he need to cut in to Rashard/Haslem's minutes in favor of the younger legs of Beas?

Practice and applying it out there on the court. Spo is being sporadic with his minutes and it just isn't good for the guy. If you want him to be an intricate part later, play him now and give him some consistency.

There is hope for Beas's defense. He has had some good games, and even at one point Beas use to play at the end of games for defensive possessions... and then he is taken out and not even played. Spo needs to make up his mind on what he wants to do with Beas.

Haslem will get no minutes when Birdman is back, so I won't bother complaining about that. BUT Lewis won't get minutes in the playoffs either if Beas shows much improvement, if Spo allows it.

I love B-easy.

I really think his D is not big problem.

If he want more mins and money.

He need to rebound the ball like him.

That's it.

Effort. Mentality. He has the physical tools to be a great defender. His wingspan is impressive and his hands are unlike anything I've ever seen in a 6'9 forward. Seriously. Look at those mitts. He's rather athletic, so it's a matter of personal discipline and defensive instincts.

If we keep him in the summer, that's what he needs to work on extensively. It can be done. Beasley has a solid mind for the game, but he's learned offense for a large part of his career. It all falls down to what HE wants. It won't come if he doesn't exhibit the desire to defend.

He rebounds pretty well. His d is the problem, mainly his team d, where he gets very lost, leaves guys open, or is late on switches.

Also, he settles for very difficult shots times still, but his offense is much improved and above average.

There is hope for his defense but like other have said he needs consistent mins to get all the kinks out. Think of it this way who is a worse defender this season Ray or Beasley? I have no problems with Rashard getting mins when hes playing good but when he plays bad there is no reason to keep him on the court. UD, Spo will play UD at center, at pf at sf in the past,we have yet to see UD at pg or sg but the season is still young lol. Some how i get the feeling Spo thinks UD is Lebron or something

Beasley defense has not been bad and his play is not the reason his minutes have been inconsistent. Every player outside of Bosh and James minutes have been inconsistent because of Spo's plan on resting players and getting everyone time on the court so they will be fully prepared for the playoffs. Beasley could be playing lights out and his minutes would be inconsistent.

Truth is... If Beasley wants to play, he needs to find another team. At Beasleys peak this year where he was scoring at a good rate, rebounded well and playing D, he was behind Lewis. Lewis is a terrible defender and can't score, yet all season Lewis has seen Spo's trust. Reality is Beasley can't win with SpoBot. One good month doesn't make up for 1 bad game. Instead of building upmBeasley we have looked for the moment to bring him down. Sad part is Beasley will be needed in playoffs and if we looked long term, has a much better outlook for this team to come. I love the heat but Beas needs to go to Spurs or OKC

Beas has actually been a decent man defender, and he's also rebounding well this year.

He struggles with OUR team defense, which is just 1 more reason I hate the headless chicken scheme.

Play normal defense with a big man inside and Beas could hold is own.

Are we talking about the same Beasley Second draft pick ? Traded for a second round pick ? Paid and benched ? Paid to go away despite a $10M investment ?

Seriously, you're nonstop "Spobot" stuff is really getting old. Find a new schick. Spo has never missed the playoffs as a Head Coach. He's made the Finals 3 times in a row. Find a new issue.

Im not sure saying making it to the finals three times in a row with Lebron Wade and Bosh is something to brag about. Thats like a kid bragging he can tie his shoe laces. Remember with another head coach we might already have 3 rings and be going for the 4th. Spo has some pluses and minuses. His rotations and devotion to certain players are lets say questionable.

Wait spo wasn't our coach 07-08?

I could have sworn he was our coach all those games I went to that year...omfg I sat right behind the heat bench a few times too. Tickets were so cheap lols

I think your really exaggerating. I dont see much struggle at all with Beasley. I cant believe that yall have not notice, most of the playing time is predetermined and scheduled for just getting everyone playing time. Now when we get into March then you can start too see lineups for game planned against opponents.

Nah, Beasley is struggling at times but without consistent minutes, it's expected. Our D isn't easy to pick up. It makes Oden look slow and lost out there too. We've been in three straight finals. All I can do is trust the team and the system to work when it needs to.

i tried not to get involved with this conversation....but.

ERIC is very fortunate to have the keys to the farrari handed to him because of loyalty...All he is doing is running the same system passed down by his mentor...PERIOD....maybe a few adjustments here and there. If mike goes to OKC/Spurs, he'll play different because....wait for it...THEY PLAY A DIFFERENT SYSTEM.

Did you see ODEN in the last game post up like a TRUE CENTER only to NEVER GET THE BALL? Take LBJ from this team..THIS YEAR, and we may not make the payoffs....Pat Riley said when hiring ERIC, "this team needs a new voice" not a new system, a new voice....

p.s. other issues with GT3 schcik may be valid, but this one about this coach...and MIKE is not ----IMHO

I'd love to see another coach, any other coach, coach this team or 2 games with their system....just to see how we'd play. ERIC's gonna get LBJ hurt with all these minutes. ODEB, a true center looked like sh@t the other night, wonder why? Think bynum would look any better...h@ll no, he'd have to do the same thing...

Mike, I feel you..good or bad, he should play before UD/lEWIS...BUT I UNDERSTAND...HE FOCKED UP BEFORE, AND SHOULD BE LUCKY TO BE ON A TEAM.....sorry bout the caps...lame excuse, if he was with the spurs, he'd kick our azz

I understand frustration and all but that's asinine. We wouldn't be in the playoffs...in the East?! West, maybe. But the East? No way, we'd still be number one in our division.

I personally am not frustrated...but I'll just accept your point - just curious, how long have you been watching Miami play?

Been rooting for them since I was a kid (forced by my mom lol). Specifically the '97 year. That's when I started to hate the Knicks. '98 sealed my hatred for them. But I was a young kid and I didn't love bball like I did later on. I didn't become a real fan until '03 when we drafted Wade.

Pretty much goes hand in hand with the dolphins. Hated football until our worst dolphin season when I finally went to a bunch of games but I always rooted for them since they're the home team. Now I really like football and I'm a massive Phin fan.

Hate the Jets.
Hate the Patriots.
Tolerate the Giants for saving our perfect record.
Oh and don't care for the Bills since they suck.
