That's potentially big. Of course he can only speak for himself, not Bron.
Says nothing about opting in though, they can simply opt out & resign - which I think is more likely. Funny that they included the Melo question in there - wonder if they wanted to fish for more.

If they only opt-in rather than opt-out and resign we are going to find it difficult to rebuild the team. If they all opt-in we are going to be wayyyyyy over the tax and next year is the first time we will get hit with the repeater tax not to mention it will be difficult to get anyone half-decent to replace Battier and Allen because of all the restrictions. But I am sure Riley will explain it to them if it comes down to that.

Like we broke down before, Opting in and waiting for the much better free agents class of 2015-2016 might be the best for both sides. Big 3 make more money and sign an extension at an older age, which is also much more profitable for them. Haslem and Cole get off the books, and then you go after :
2015-2016 free agents :A list :
Marc Gasol/Kevin Love/Deandre Jordan/Omer Asik
B list : Paul Millsap/Tyson Chandler/Robin Lopez/Arron Afflalo
Now compare that to the best options from the
2014-2015 free agent class :
Kyle Lowry/Trevor Ariza/Gortat/Spencer Hawes.You almost hope they wait until 2015-2016 before opting out. We'll only have cap space in one summer, the summer they resign. The first year is always the year their salaries will be the lowest. The real impact players in the position we need are at the 2015-2016 class.
The risk is, if **** hits the fan during the 2014-2015 season, they might not want to resign by the time 2015-2016 comes around.

^Rex, in your scenario above for next year, how competitive can we be for the championship with the Big 3 opting in and little cap space to boot? It does seem like the '15 FA class is way better, but the tradeoff is we might not be as good next season.

True, but sometimes you have to think long term. Getting a Gasol/Love/Jordan can widen the contending window by 5-6 years. So yes, we won't be as strong for 2014-2015, but If Oden, Beasley, Draft kid, and Ennis step up, we should still contend. And honestly, I don't think it's realistic to expect any team to go the finals every year for 5 years in a row. Way too draining. So next year could be a down year, recharge and relax a bit before we come back stronger for the second part of the Trilogy in 2015-2016.

Your assessment doesn't account for other external factors. If I am Riley I want LeBron committed to that 4 or 5 year deal ASAP. I don't want him to wait another season where so much could go wrong as you yourself pointed out. The market right now is extremely favorable for Miami. As of right now Lakers, Cavs, and Knicks are all reeling. All of them are horrible destinations for LeBron. Another year/season gives these franchises gives them time to get their **** together which I do no want. I do not want Lakers or Knicks or Cavs improving their team with a good roster and becoming an attractive destination. As you said there is also the potential of the team imploding and things going completely south.
From a basketball POV you are asking LeBron and Bosh to pretty much waste a year of their prime and asking a fragile Wade to put another season's worth of miles on his weak body. Moreover, right now I think we are going to pay $20-$30 million in taxes. If the big 3 opt-in that repeater tax is going to kick in and this will not be a championship roster because we will not be able to reload.
While the 2015 FA class is better and you got a point there, as long as the Big 3 resign we can contend with youth around them. It's not realistic to add a 4th all-star anyway unless the Big 3 take even bigger paycuts. I am of the belief that as long as I can sign LeBron to a long-term deal you can figure out the rest later.

I agree with paulie. Rex, you don't take "risks" with Lebron, you sign him ASAP. Thennnnn you worry about what players/scrubs u put around him and the big 3.
Also, maybe this will calm Knick fans down, reading there forums they truly believe Lebron will be a Knick lol, poor souls those bastard Knick fans.

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble or anything, but all he said was "true." All NBA teams play in Miami at least once during the regular season. Most NBA players (the important ones, anyway) visit Miami at least once a year. Don't read into this too much.

Honestly, where do people think Lebron/Bosh/Wade are going to go? Never understood the Cavs theory, which I think has been put to rest with the season's disaster finish. LA? Kobe's contract ruined any chance. I mean what's left, NY? I think someone mentioned 76ers on the general forum...yeah.
If there was a legit option, I would really understand and worry. But I don't see a green pasture to run off to. We have a solid coach, solid front office, and owner willing to go over cap (at least if we are winning). There is literally no news of any team clearing cap space and really gunning to sign Lebron + superstar combo. I don't get it. The reason everyone covered Lebron last free agency was the amount of suitors and unstable situation.
I know Bosh truly wants to stay, I think Bron's heart is here too now with the titles. Only real question is the $$, especially for Wade. Have to make everyone happy while not putting our entire salary on 3 guys. At this point it's not if they stay, it's what money they are willing to take. Unless Riley and Micky insult these guys with stupid offers, they are staying IMO.
Question is what will we be able to put next to them.

I'm sure our management has a presentation ready which presents every option depending on how they Big Three decide to act this summer. Either way, we need to keep this core group together, because this whole "let's just worry about keeping LeBron and then the rest" scenario failed miserably in Cleveland. It's been proven that you need a good team to win, so we should do all we can to not only keep this trio, which is working, together, but looking to add to it.
Both ways, opting in or signing an extension right away, have risk and advantages, but both of them require the players and management to work together. If we're to three peat, that should make things relatively easy, but even if we don't, there aren't many GMs who have proven to build winning teams as often as Riley has.

No, David. It was an extremely open-ended question. He gave an extremely open-ended answer. It was Stugotz that began interpreting it as "opting in" for next season. Bosh said true. It's true that they'll be in Miami next season, whether it's as a member of Miami or as a member of some other team, hence my original post. You're right, Bosh wasn't lying or being dishonest. Look at the question, though.
