Great Le Batard article on Lebron Hatred with Poll

This article nicely sums up my feelings surrounding the irrational vile and hatred towards Lebron. I'm disturbed and disheartened.

I also created a poll to get a sense of why he receives this non stop, below the belt, charged mockery. I've NEVER seen an athlete mocked for being injured like Lebron has. Heck, DROSE hasn't played in 2 years and nobody would dare mock him the same way Lebron was mocked for sitting out 7 minutes.

Some article highlights:
And what you heard after Game 1 was uncomfortable, all right. Twitter was abuzz name-calling and character-smearing James. Female dog. Female body part. No balls. Little girl. Menstrual cramps. Made you wonder who those angry Twitter users hated more — LeBron or women. The whole thing was ugly and foul and odd, given that we usually give a pass to the champion who has disproved us even once, never mind twice, and then we move on to the Tony Romos and Dwight Howards and Carmelo Anthonys because the angry math is always in the bitter critic’s favor with so many more losers than winners in sports every year.

For four years now, James has been building these relationships in Miami, through failure and success, through unholy noise and through blessed quiet. He looks to his left, and he looks to his right in that locker room, and those are the only people who have endured and shared and understood the weight of this with him as the noise outside that room has lapped against their locker-room cocoon like ocean waves coming to shore. Us-against-the-world can be an athletic cliche, but it is a very real thing in the Heat’s locker room, and his teammates have been the closest to him in more ways than one. When this is over this season, however it ends, the world’s best basketball player will have a choice.

He can go out into the noise and find new men with whom to fight it.

Or he can stay with the ones with whom he has already conquered it.

None of the above - the reason Lebron gets so much hate is because he cares about what people say. He wants to be loved. MJ/Kobe were selfish bastards who could never see a single thing beyond their own ego. Lebron is different and that's why he gets the hate.

No... He's hated because people are angry with the Decision and the fact that he didn't join their team.

The fact that he left the Cavs in the manner he did during the Golden Age for social media sites only compounded that hate.

I think it's more a general jealousy.

I think what you are seeing today is the birth of a new media. Guys like Lebron and Tiger woods are the first athletes that are going through something that is going to become the norm in the future. Everyone gets to voice their opinions and if you get the praise you also get the venom.

You look at this new age of celebrity, people can not be perfect, no matter what you do they will find something to criticize and try to tear you down. The reason for it is clearly jealousy. Lebron is the greatest athlete in the world currently and people need to make themselves feel better about themselves so they take it out on him. But we also do it to celebrities, politicians, and each other. People are just really insecure and angry so most of the opinions shared are going to be filled with vitriol.

The sad thing is that when he has finished with his career and people talk about him, it will be like they talk about Jordan currently. The human psych is a very strange thing.

So why doesn't Durant get any of it? He deals with the same media. Its jealousy. Its fear because Lebron has a legit chance of being GOAT and they are scared. It can't be, he can't be the one, he doesn't have killer instinct, he joined other players to win, he's mentally weak, he isn't clutch, he can't withstand cramps but MJ played with a flu, MJ would play with a bullet wound in his leg. Lebron can't be the one. Its fear, jealousy and hatred all tied into one, its a brutal mix.

This guy is a perfect encapsulation of it

LMAO!!!!! Is this a joke? MJ held on to being cut by a high school team, and still holds on to it, yet he doesn't care what people think? Kobe feuding with Shaq and outing players to make himself look good after being accused of rape and cheating on his wife had nothing to do with him caring about what people say?

This is ridiculous.

Lebron gets hate because he isn't a narcissistic, gambling, raping prick? This only makes sense in Knicks world.

Durant doesn't get it because everyone knows he is soft and nowhere near the player Lebron is.
Lebron may go down as the greatest of all time and the NY based media market, coupled with the big metro areas like Chicago and LA can't stand the fact that he plays for Miami and sh*t on their supposed basketball meccas.

Yes. That's absolutely the reason. Can't understand why this would get the board so riled up, since it's hardly a dis on Lebron. There's no point in hating a guy who could care less about anybody but himself. So yeah, the more of a prick you are, the less hate you get.

What a stupid post. LeBron gets hate because he is the first superstar of the social media era. If MJ played in this era, social media would have a meltdown when he punched Kerr or went gambling before playoff games.

Social media blows up everything and every little thing becomes a big deal. Even Kobe is lucky that his rape trial happened before the social media era.

Is he the only superstar in the sports world? How about Durant? Melo? NFL stars? MLB stars? Soccer stars? Lebron is not the only sports star of this era.

LeBron is the first superstar of the social media era. KD is a different personality. Melo isn't really a superstar to me. The comparison was with MJ not KD and Melo. If MJ or any other player was pulling the **** that MJ was doing in his time, that person would get eaten alive on social media. Can you imagine LeBron going gambling before a playoff game? Twitter would crash.

It's a racial thing partially. LeBron has never had much (if any) off court problems. There's nothing to really hate the guy on besides the decision. So people will hold on to things like this. It validates them in a weird sense, since he's on a level of his craft people can only dream of. Sports journalism is pretty much dead. Twitter killed it imo.

Some can't stand a well mannered, successful, squeaky clean image black man like Bron. These cats have been building him up from when he was a little kid. I'm not a Bron fan, but one thing I can admire is how he carries himself with how everyone has labelled him as some sort of basketball deity for a majority of his life. They can't stand that he isn't **** up under the pressure. So no, I'm not surprised at the reaction of these clowns taking shots at him for Game 1. Good on him.

With that said, #GoSpursGo.

Pretty much this. Add in the fact that major ESPN personalities and other sports analysts act like 16 year olds on twitter to troll LeBron/Heat to get more followers and more hits/views/clicks for their content, we are seeing an influx of "First Take" type sports journalism/analysis.

You completely ignored my post. Other sports (NFL, MLB, Soccer) have superstars in the same social media era. What makes Lebron different?

There are no soccer superstars in America. In baseball no one player can dominate the game and culture like a NBA superstar can. Same for the NFL, though great QBs like Brady have some hate. Lebron is a legendary player and a true threat to Jordan (and plays in the internet era), which ticks off the massive Jordan fan base. Jordan is easily the most beloved athlete in America. If anyone threatens him they are hated. Melo is not a superstar btw. Durant is not a threat to Jordan. Also Lebron does not play for a big market, so that hurts him. Had he picked NY in 2010 he would be a lot more loved than he is right now.

Your first post said that it is because Lebron cares what people thinks about him (which is stupid)...well Jordan cares what people think about him as well. What's your response to this?
