So when are we going to put our pride aside and run zone?

Thats basically what the Spurs are doing to us.

Man to Man isn't working and switching over playing the pick n roll isn't working because ALL 5 GUYS ARE EXCELLENT PASSERS and see the floor well. They are also great shooters.

Wade and Lebron get tired so easily this team as a whole are getting older so when are we going to put pride aside and zone up.....start Tony Douglas at point and let him pressure Parker up the floor and ZONE UP. That would allow us to play Beasley for his offense and mask his defensive liabities (which are overblown imo)

And lets have a shot at winning these 3 games

thoughts or better ideas? lets get a good discussion

I've mentioned this a few times. It's not likely to be successful, but it's our best bet. Our defense will never work against this team. And all the while, we'll blow whatever energy we had for offense. We need a major revamp, of both personnel and system, this offseason.

Until then, our best option is to just sink into zone, take away layups, conserve energy on D, and hope to out score them on O. They're absolutely destroying us at chess. We need to turn this into a game of checkers and hope to ride our personnel past theirs.

Zone is a gimmick defense that is nullified by good team passing and shooting. Mix that with the fact Miami NEVER runs zone sets and it'd be a trainwreck against this Spurs team.

I said it yesterday...don't leave the 3pt shooters, play a bigger lineup to contest their drives more effectively, and don't overreact to Boris Diaw. Basically, they need to play more conservatively, NOT change the entire system and use a gimmick that smart teams can exploit.

And Miami won't all of a sudden get an instant 20PPG from Beasley, who's been glued to the bench for months now. Changing the defense just to hide his defensive ineptitude enough to warrant playing time is completely moronic.

As has LeBron, just watched some of games 3 and 4, it goes unnoticed how poor he was as well.

I wouldn't mind a little 3-2 zone against them, they've been killing us in our man-to-man scenario and will continue to do so. A 3-2 could actually work if executed properly.

Haha. Not too far off base but give him a break lol. I think the majority of Wade's concerns are stemming for his offensive game and less from his defense. I do agree with the occasional use of the zone defense. I've been saying it all series. It's just a good way to change the pace and force the Spurs to adjust to us for once. They are a great zone team with their outside shooting though so seldom use of the zone to change the pace would , IMO, work masterfully. Spoelstra has always been a bit robotic with his approach to coaching so I don't think he would consider this option too lightly.

Zone is NOT a "gimmick defense". It's a great defense against certain systems, especially against teams who don't move the ball and instead just play ISO and/or teams without outside shooting.

I wanted the Heat to play zone from day 1 of the big 3. Not against everybody, but to practice it and use it against teams that would be just killed by it (Bulls, Pacers). The Pacers wouldn't have made it to g7 last season if the Heat were playing zone against them. The Heat, especially in 2011 and 2012, where perfect to play a zone: athletic, fast, smart.

Unfortunately, besides the fact that right now it's waaaaay too late to switch to a defensive system you never practiced, the Spurs are the worst team to try the zone against. They move the ball and they are shooting it out of their minds. Right now, they'd murder a zone.

Oh yeah, and a bad team defender would be exposed just as bad by a zone (if not more) as he would by any other defensive system. So Beasley would suck just as bad on D.

Re-read what I said in regards to the OP. I specified hiding Beasley because the OP implied it would hide Beasley. My gripe was that it's stupid to change an entire defense for an inconsistent volume scorer who's been glued to the bench for months.

Pretty much everything else we agree on. Except, the zone being a gimmick. I call it that because it only works well against poor shooting, iso-oriented teams. At best, you could employ it a couple sets a game to throw most teams off, but good offenses can eat it up if used for high volume.
