Can the Heat use their $2.2M trade exception in conjunction with Norris Cole and get back a player with a $4.2M salary?

No. can only be used in trade. and you can not add it to coles salary in your scenario. we actually dont have to send anyone out, we can just absorb a contract no more than the tpe.

Ira made it seem this exception is only available to us if we stay below the cap. That isn't true. We have one calendar year to use this exception. It would be worth holding onto into the season, especially for when some of the smaller contracts signed this summer, including draft picks, can become available.

Trade exceptions count as a cap hold. Meaning to make full use of the cap space, the exception would have to be renounced. So if the Heat stay above the cap, they will have the trade exception, the MLE, and the Bi annual exception to work with. If they work below the cap, then most likely they renounce the trade exception, and use the room exception.

So this exception can be used to acquire someone like Shump for example, correct? I'd much rather him rotate with say Lowry/Napier-Wade/Allen than Cole.

Only when trading with another team can "trade" exception be used.
