Dwyane Wade Will Thrive As Miami Heat Point Guard





As Dwyane Wade stated, when you’re as many games below .500 as the Miami Heat are, it’s time to look at other options to help your team win. Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole have been God-awful as floor generals. Wade said in an interview Tuesday that he will be playing point guard more often in the future and I absolutely love this move.

Your starting point guard is supposed to control the tempo, see the floor, make momentum plays and finish in the lane. Wade is more than capable of completing each of those facets of the game. He has dished out at least 10 assists in three different games this season at shooting guard which shows he is a willing passer. He’s always been an unselfish superstar during his career by averaging six dimes throughout his NBA tenure.

Chalmers and Cole have not adjusted to the post-LeBron era yet. They can’t just be spot-up shooters and wait for LeBron to distract their defender. It’s not as sweet as it once was now that they are actually expected to play the role of a true point guard. It has not panned out well in the first 37 games, but the Heat are still in the playoff picture. But before they lose that status, I like the idea of shaping the offense in a different direction with Wade handling the ball more.

The biggest weapon a point guard must have in their arsenal is the ability to get in the paint. Just watch all the great active, pass-first point guards like Tony Parker, Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo. They gather the defense’s attention in the paint while the rest of the team moves without the basketball. If Wade is able to execute in that manner, Miami will have easier looks at the basket. They have a decent group of three-point shooters in Luol Deng, Chalmers, Danny Granger and Chris Bosh. Their defense (eighth in the league) isn’t the issue. Their stagnant offense (28th in the league) is the problem which I believe Wade will solve.

In the wake of Hassan Whiteside‘s career game, I think this will open up some high-percentage pick and roll opportunities for Wade too. Whiteside is a big body who has shown that he can fill the lane. That play alone will force teams to honor the paint presence that Wade and Whiteside will continually attack. I see really good things coming from this change if Wade is to play point guard more often than not.

No Wade isn't spry as he once was to be scoring at a high level AND facilitating almost every play. It takes a toll on him because our PGs are incapable of running an offense. It's really frustrating when Wade is the only guy who is capable of throwing a pass into the post or make pin-point lobs.

Our solution is sitting on the bench but Spo refuses to play him.

To be fair none of our point guards have ever played with a true center or had to play PG

Lol Rio and Cole haven't gotten use to LeBron gone

even if they can't play make, they still can't **** shoot... its not just one department they are sucking in, its everything

Cole looked as a back up PG would who mostly plays defense against the Clips

Rio is looking worthless these days.

Playing Wade out of position is the Lazy fix, and it won't work long term. We don't even have a good SG now, so what's the point.

We need to trade for Dragic/Knight/Thomas/Jackson.

What would the Bucks want in a deal for Knight? Knight and Wade in the backcourt would be a perfect combination. But what can the Heat offer besides Napier and a 1st round pick? The Bucks are set at SF already and their backup PG Marshall is out for the season. Knight could make the All-Star team this year and the Bucks are making the playoffs so I don't know why they would trade him.

I think we can probably go after Dragic. He'll be free next year, so Phoenix might prefer to get something back for him. I wonder what would it take to get him?

I agree. I don't think Wade has the speed to cover PGs.

i tell you what, bring in a true decent pg and keep dw at the sg position because he can surely bump his assists but his turnovers would get a bump as well and you all know how critical is for the heat to keep its turnovers down

Don't see the point of the article. Wade has always been the de facto "point guard" and has been the primary playmaker and initiator on offense.

Wade can guard opponents shooting guard while playing as a point guard. But I don't like the idea of him playing point guard at all anyway.. he is still one of the most efficient shooting guards in the league.

Wade isn't the answer to any question. He can't stay on the court.

TJ can grow into that role. We still need a Dragic level PG if we want to be elite.

We have a better chance of getting Dragic than Knight now. What would the Suns take back for him though? They already have 2 or 3 other point guards so I don't know whether they would take Napier and Rio in the deal. They would like to get a 1st round pick at least rather then lose him for nothing. Dragic could sign anywhere after the year but a lineup of Dragic, Wade, Deng, Bosh and Whiteside could be one of the best in the East this season. I don't think they trade him though, since the Suns are still in playoff position.

IMO this season is a lost, yes we will make the playoffs. But this team has sooo many issues. I think we should clear some cap room to make a big signing this off season. Goran Dragic is such a good fit here, in which his signing would make the weakest backcourt into one of the strongest instantly. He stays healthy and he versatile to play the 2 and 1.
