The star of our 2000-2001 team in Zo's absence. Peace, Mase.

I get my hair cut correct like Anthony Mason - Beastie Boys

Won 50 games that year despite missing Zo for the majority of the season. Fair to say that was an NBA finals team had Zo never got sick. Would've definitely been a better team than Philly and or Milwakuee.

How awesome is this story? Mase was the definition of a Riley player.

I'm very sorry to hear this terrible news.

For that one season in Miami, he was automatic in the low post. It may not have been pretty (and it may have taken the length of the shot clock), but you knew he'd inevitably bully his way under the rim and get you a basket.

And here's something else I always appreciated about Mason: he didn't fear the Knicks. Moreover, he remained bitter that New York would ever trade him for Larry Johnson -- as far as he was concerned, the thought was unfathomable. He was just that self-confident.

And even though we never did actually played the Knicks in the postseason, we desperately needed that attitude. It just felt like so many of those late-90s Heat players (and fans for that matter) were so shell-shocked and Knick-phobic after losing to them so many times, it was a godsend to add a player in Mason that was so relentlessly unafraid of the Knicks. We needed that. (Now as to why he completely disappeared in the playoffs against the Charlotte Hornets, his other former team, I have no idea. But I digress.)

Rest in peace, Anthony Mason.
