Heat sign Spoelstra to contract extension

Post#1 » by KDS91 » Sat Dec 31, 2016 6:14 am

http://www.nba.com/article/2016/12/30/miami-heat-coach-erik-spoelstra-gets-contract-extension

His contract was set to expire after this season. Terms have not been disclosed as of yet.

The team confirmed Friday that Spoelstra – in his ninth season and already the NBA’s second-longest tenured coach behind San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich – would continue in his current position for the foreseeable future.

Issuing a statement before the Heat’s game at Boston, Spoelstra expressed gratitude to franchise owner Micky Arison and president Pat Riley for the opportunity and their support.

“I would like to thank the Arisons and Pat for their continued confidence in me and my staff and are humbled in their trust in me as head coach," Spoelstra said. "It has been an incredible 22 years being part of the Miami Heat family and we will look to continue our goal of winning NBA championships."

Its logical, he was at the helm of our most successful run in our history. 2010 - 2014.. we are still in effect of that.
I think if you give him talent, he will win. I like continuity too. This year is wash though however.

I used to think Spo was a bad coach. But seeing what he has done last year, and with the roster currently constructed, I firmly believe he is a solid coach. And I remember reading a thread about Spo a while back in the GB board and some people would pick him up in a second if he was available.

Congrats Spo! :wizard:

I'm very happy about this honestly...

I'm proud that our team sets a good example in the nba to show how patience can pay off. Lots of teams nowadays fire their coach the sec the fans start whining and they end up staying on the treadmill forever because the team never has a true identity.

Spo may not be perfect but he sets the tone for our team and also the tone from from the front office. He also has a lot of experience... playoff experience, miami experience, experience sucking and experience being good. Glad to have him back for as long as he's under contract and for hopefully for more years... including the ups and downs.

Edit: also proud of our fans for the most part for standing behind spo. I know I'm not the only person who feels this way.

Basically this sounds like the first step to going on a full tank mode. Spo has his job security so now he is more open to the tanking.

I mean, we all have our issues with SpoBot, but I have faith he will improve as a Coach as the years go by.

Eventually, the fire that burned in Riley to win more rings outside of the Showtime Lakers, will burn in Spo... to win rings outside of the Big 3.

I have a question..... does anyone know if Spo will take over the FO when Pat retires..... the dual-role thing Pat had as Coach/GM ?

Considering how some of my non Heat fan friends have all had their teams shuffle through many coaches, it's really cool to have consistency and continuity with Spo

Deserved. He's one of the best coaches in the league. His influence on the league's best players is noticeable without question. He's become his own coaching figure now, no longer merely a shadow of Pat Riley's will. I hope he coaches another 15 years. Only thing left to do now is give this man some championship talent to coach with. Lord knows he can develop guys.
