A little late to the party but I think even though the Heat did not get D Cousins that they can still benefit into two ways from that deal.

1. Trade for T Jones who is requesting out for more PT. Find a way to ship Ellington out to a third team and a min priced guard back to New Orleans. Maybe a team with space that needs a shooter.

2. R Gay will definitely opt out of his contract summer instead of staying in that dumpster fire in Sacramento. Barry Jackson has written on multiple occasions about his interest in coming to Miami. We can try to sign to a below market deal because of his injury (say $10-13 million a year) this offseason and play him as a small ball 4 next to Winslow. Might be the biggest realistic available F/A this summer.

Chandler, for example, is due $12 million next season, with a $12.8 million player option the following season. Booker is due $9.1 million next season. Reducing your flexibility this summer to take on that type of contract doesn’t make sense.

Do we need flexibility that much?

We just need the ability to sign our own mediocre players

Good to hear. We can gauge a financial commitment to Waiters or Shaved when the time comes, we have their resumes. No sense being on the hook for multiple years with unknown commodities from other teams.

Dragic is 30, Hassan is approaching in a couple years with a game that depends on athleticism.

They have Millsap 30, Dwight 31. Luckily their best asset is a 23 year old.

That's where the majority money is tied up between both teams

My point is why encourage them to rebuild when they're currently pretty much our best case scenario in a couple years?

Shouldn't we be jumping ahead of the curve?

Millsap is 32

Edited, but the point stands

If it takes 2 years for one of the "young prospects" to hopefully get to a borderline allstar level like Schroeder, we're still dealing with a 32 year old Dragic and a near 30 Whiteside.

It's the same scenario

It wont take that long cause Pat will trade off our young inexperienced players for veterans that know how to win.

Wilson Chandler is not a marginal player, we can't just recycle through 1 year contract guys and lose them to the Nets every year

Rudy Gay opt out of his contract when he can't even play until All Star Break in 2018? That's not going to happen. Next year is a payoff year. He'll be back in the market next summer (2018).

He's a pretty good starting wing. My main point is that we shouldn't refuse to add someone just because they have years on their contract, compiling good assets (since we aren't compiling picks atm) is not just going through the bargain bin for 1 year contract guys every single year. In the situation we're in now a big chunk of our main contributors are contract year guys, we don't have the salaries or picks to truly go whale hunting. That is if you want to add a big name player to Dragic & Whiteside.

He's the same age as Shaved. I just want to understand why people have a problem with resigning our own guys while promoting the idea of trading for similarly talented and aged counterparts

I don't have a problem with resigning him, I just think the last offseason showed how crazy the contracts are getting and that while we may want to resign Dion, James Johnson, and Willie Reed there's an incredibly high chance we lose the majority of them to big offers from elsewhere. If that happens, it happens and we move on. But are we just gonna keep getting 1 year contract guys every year and keep getting them paid elsewhere?

We're not doing sh**. Gotta wait til the draft for real moves. Isnt worth trading JJ for 2nd rounders and our other guys will net even less. Deadlines over for us.

That would look really good if the Lakers pick conveyed this year. Two high lottery picks, and a likely late one of their own. They'd probably jump from the 10-14 range to top 3 with their own pick...bringing back memories of 2008.
