Who to start at SG/SF?

Post#1 » by miula » Fri Jul 14, 2017 4:50 am

Right now we have 3 SG: Waiters / JRich / TJ, and 3 SF Winslow / JJ / McGruder

Who do you think / like to start?

For me, I think it's pretty sure TJ will play PG/SG backup, and JJ will start at PF or play SF/PF backup.

So I think the starting duo of SG/SF is going to be

A)
SG - JRich
SF - Winslow

B)
SG - Waiters
SF - Winslow

C)
SG - Waiters
SF - JRich

Which one you think is going to happen?

B. I think Waiters and Justise will eventually start though Spo may play around with lineups in preseason.

Agree.

I think It's Dion And Justise at least for a while, but both could lose it down the line if the other options step up. Mainly TJ, Rich and Mcloving.

Default:

PG: Goran Dragic
SG: Dion Waiters
SF: Justise Winslow
PF: James Johnson
C: Hassan Whiteside

It's Winslow's spot to lose, as well as Waiters. Richardson isn't reliable enough, in my opinion. He had some serious awareness and decision-making issues that hurt his chances last year. TJ looks to be the backup combo PG/SG next to Josh and Wayne/Rodney.

Olynkyk is going to start at power forward imo. Other than that, I agree with your lineup...

No question that the major driver of our 30-11 second half (21-4 with waiters in lineup) was the dragic-waiters drive and kick game. That alone cements waiters at the 2.

The SF position is another story - mcgruder was probably most effective with least potential. J-Rich has moderate performance to ceiling ratio and Winslow is one of a couple of guys we are hedging on to make that leap so you are weighing potential vs immediate gratification. Spo will probably make Winslow earn it in pre-season and make the decision then. I honestly have no clue and I wouldn't be surprised if Spo has no idea either. I would probably lean to the slow burn and say McGruder or J-Rich unless Winslow blows them away

I agree. Not that I think Olynyk is better, but I feel like JJ's playmaking will be much more useful for the bench unit.

D. Waiters (SG), McGruder (SF)

But give Richardson and Winslow plenty of minutes off the bench. Be flexible.

Waiters is the shooting guard until he does something to lose the job. I think Winslow starts at SF to start the season, even though I'd rather leave McGruder out there, or anyone that can shoot and help spread the floor.

That you for asking what I'd like, because Spo never does.

I've no issue with Winslow starting, as long as he can shoot as well as McGruder. I suspect that will take time.

really hope winslow doesn't start. we need shooting, mcgruder, jrich, ellington all guys i would want starting ahead of winslow, if winslow can start making shots and he proves effective he can earn the spot back.

^and we need JJ's playmaking off the bench because we dont have a backup pg. i dont really love olynik starting next to whiteside tho, hopefully he plays well. i see him more as our backup 5.

our roster is so guard heavy that for us to get our most talented on the floor the most minutes we can we have to play small a lot, and with whiteside thats fine.

our roster is kind of weird. the positions i see our guys playing.

dragic-1,2
dion-1,2,3
tj-1,2
jrich-1,2,3
ellingotn-2,3
winslow-3,4
bam-4,5
whiteside-5
olynik-4,5
jj-3,4,5
mcgruder,2,3

we have a bunch of guys that can play the 2 and 3. other than i guess olynik, we really dont have another legit 40% 3 stretch 4. would like to see us bring babbit back and start him, even if for 5min in the first and 3rd. i just like the way he fits the starting lineup and we went on our big run with him starting.

dragic/tj
dion/ellington
mcrgruder/winslow
babbit/jj/bam
whiteside/olynik

our lineup with most minutes will probably be

dragic
tj
dion
jj
whiteside

If Winslow gets up to 30% from 3, I'll be thrilled. He just can't be useless out there on offense, and he can't need the ball in his hands.

I think Olynyk is better served as the backup C with JJ starting and bam as backup PF. the tough choice lies with our wings imo. winslow you will all see is a for sure starter, the problem lies with what to do with tj/jrich/ellington/mcgruder/white
i like this

pg: dragic/tj
sg: waiters/ellington/jrich
sf: winslow/mcgruder/white
pf: jj/bam/babbitt
c: whiteside/olynyk/haslem

jrich is going to have to earn his spot back and work to get that extension from the heat

just curious, what makes winslow a for sure starter?

that starting lineup would be really poor spacing the floor. that lineup, the only 3pt shooter on the floor would be our point guard.

The FO is still very high on Winslow, regardless of how we, as fans feel about him now. They obviously see something in him, as in his body of work, his approach & mentality, etc. outside of games that we fans do not have the privilege of observing. I think he will start and the coaching staff will give him another opportunity. If he doesn't improve from last season, then coaching staff will likely replace him with McGruder. I feel his development is just as important to FO as Heat competing for ECF. They feel there is a correlation

Dragic/TJ/JRich
Waiters/Ellington/JRich
Mcgruder/Winslow/JJ
Kelly/JJ/Winslow
Whiteside/Bam/Kelly

TJ/Elington/Winslow/JJ/Bam

Our second unit could probably make the playoffs in the East as their own team

He's our best SF, McGruder can't shoot either. He made .9 three's per game last season, let's not act like he's a floor space either. Justise will be at his best guarding the opposing teams best player while playing off ball on offense, benefiting from the attention that our other starters draw.

Justise can't be the floor spacer that would be needed in the lineup. His defender will just lay off of him and clog the lane. He shot 20% last season on catch-and-shoot 3P. McGruder shot over 35% which is good enough to keep defenses honest. Winslow needs to aim to shoot around that at least, especially with 2 ball dominant guards and a relatively high USG center in the lineup.
