HEAT Signs Derrick Walton Jr. to a two way contract

I watched Walton play every game he played in Summer league and he killed it. Dude can pass, is quick, hit 3's at a solid clip (6 for 12) and was a pesky defender. I really hoped the Magic was going to sign him as their 3rd PG but they signed Mack instead. He will develop well in Miami. Congrats!

He spent four years at the University of Michigan, and he’s the only player in school history to score 1,000 points, collect 500 rebounds and distribute 400 assists. As a senior, he led the Wolverines to the Big Ten Tournament title and to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16.

``At this level, guys know who can play and playing the right way is how you win. I’ve always been about winning. Winning basketball stands out and going out and scoring points has never really been on my mind. It’s just about making the right play and the rest will take care of itself.’’

We stole him from you guys. Loved watching him in the tournament this year. Was a pure bulldog. Feel like he can turn out to be another Pat Bev.

Totally thought we signed Derrick Williams again. Let's not Derrick or Walton, Let's go Jr. :)

Spoiler:
A smallish PG that can chuck up 3's, handle, good BB IQ. Traditional type backup PG.

Intriguing prospect. But it's going to be same deal as it was with Briante Weber, he's gonna have to make shots to stay in the league.

Thats the difference between Walton and Weber. Weber is an elite level defender (Beverly type) who was waiting on his offense to develop.

Walton is a very efficient offensive player, and will be able to stay in the league if his defense improves (which should with NBA trainers)

His OBPM is ridiculous and his defense is decent for a guard his size.

Seems like a solid, high IQ, savvy PG. Solis shooter, not much of a scorer, mediocre athlthe at best, maybe could carve out a role as a backup PG. Lowish celling low risk type of a player.

Muchlike pbev we didn't give Weber a shot with the main unit. We almost did the same thing with tj. I don't know anything n about this guy nor do I think he is any kind of answer but let's not get in our way. If him or Matt Williams give us the flexibility to make some trades them great.

I am not going to pretend I know a whole lot about this kid but from what I hear, he is a high percentage 3pt shooter but horrendous inside the arc. He is not very athletic but has a high BBIQ, solid passer/court vision and like other's said, he's a bulldog. The key to his development is going to be if he can develop a game at the rim and the mid-range. He also needs to figure out how to rotate and move efficiently on the defensive end with his limited athleticism. Become somewhat of an adequate 1-on-1 defender.

I think he projects as a 3rd PG/backup PG at best. Marginal NBA talent. He is a hard worker, so let's see if Miami coaches can cook up some magic.

Frank Mason, Ball and Kennard were the only players ahead of DWJ in NCAA OPA(offensive points added) for 2016-17.

He was pretty good in the tournament. His and D.J. Wilson's sudden improvement led to Michigan exceeding expectations.

I wanted him in Orlando on a two-way.

It's a shame but good luck with Walton.
