The reason Pat signed Waiters, JJ and Olynyk was too develop them into trade assets. JJ and Waiters been hurt for a yr or more so their trade value has not been what the Heat hoped. Olynyk and Wiaters was almost cashed in for Butler. When you are retooling that means you have a core (stars) and trying to build around them. When you are rebuilding you are trying to find a core.
You can't rebuild without tearing down what is already there. We are retooling ... around Whiteside and Dragic. That is our sad core.
JJ is a 31 year old journeyman. If Pat intended to develop him into a trade asset, then he's reached the stage where you need to worry about him walking around the office with no pants on. Teams don't trade stars for 31 year old journeymen.
Where do I begin. All you are saying is you do not agree how he choosing to rebuild. You can disagree with it or not. But you got to be out of your dam mind if you think Riley thought Whiteside and Dragic were a championship core. Second rebuilding is changing your core. Whiteside and Dragic were hold overs to when they tried to reload around Bosh and Wade. Why are you just trading players for the hell of it? Not to tank, because they only have 2 draft picks in four years. Its tough enough to rebuild through the draft with 8 draft picks in four years. The have 2 in five years.
And let me back this up and look at what the Heat was looking at. The rebuild started when they failed to get Durant.Prior to that it was to reload. The Heat was facing 2 draft picks in 5 years, so building through the draft was a tough road. Because of TJ contract they only had 2 years to make moves in free agency. In those two years only Gordon Hayward was a potential good player. When they signed Waiters, JJ and Olynk, they had to use that cap space for the next 3 years because TJ was gonna eat it up for two years.
Second one of Riley beliefs in attracting a whale free agent is by showing them you are a playoff team. How many Whales move to a bad team unless its a going back home move? Especially now that they will have to give up the SuperMax. That is why Kyrie, George and Butler forced a trade.
To say it was impossible to use James as a piece acquire a star. Riley is a guy who used Brian Grant to get Shaq.
So in all the Heat was facing this three problems.
2 years to make free agent moves, summer 2016 and 2017
2 draft picks in 5 years, 2017 and 2019 (None in 2016, 18 and 20)
Stars not turning down the supermax.
Getting Bosh contract off the cap
That is why they chose to hopefully build up, Whiteside, JJ, Dragic, Waiters, Richardson, Winslow, Olynk, the two draft picks into valuable trading pawns. If not they start a new plan in 2020.
