Who says no to this trade?

Whiteside opts in, Marvin Williams opts in, and we trade them for each other.
Charlotte gets rim protection (which is their biggest need) and frees up minutes for Miles Bridges. We get more shooting, a strong veteran presence and more playing time for Bam. Both teams move on after next year.
For Whiteside, he gets a great opportunity to go back home. Williams gets a chance to revive his career in Miami.

I say no. We don't need a player like Williams who wouldn't be on the team in 2 years and a half years. We need to complete our retooling next season by developing our young players and getting a mid-lottery pick next year.

We aren't getting a pick or a young player for Whiteside. This is the kind of move to make if you want to free up minutes for Bam.

for those that are predictably overreacting the trade is just 1 expiring for another (cheaper) one. Nothing to make a fuss about.

by contract

Unless Charlotte has a ton of cap space, that trade won't work. Whiteside will earn ~ $27 million next season ... Williams will only earn ~ $15 million. We would have to take back another contract.

If everyone opts in our front court will look like this:
- C: Bam / Whiteside
- PF: Olynyk / JJ / Anderson
If we traded Whiteside for Williams, Olynyk would slide over to backup centre and Williams can start at PF. Does that make us better? I'm not sure it does, but it does clear some space if we didn't have to take another player of theirs on in order to balance salaries.
For me, I would be open to doing this move if the Hornets land a higher lottery pick than us and were offering to swap first round picks. At that point it would make sense for us because we would be moving Whiteside in order to trade up in the draft.

I'm not sure Charlotte can afford to do it, but they wouldn't include a pick swap even if they could, unless they were getting the better end of it. Hassan's salary is pretty prohibitive. They could easily absorb a bad salary and get a pick for it.
