I've been looking at legit ways to add a player and I do not see many options. Even getting a player like Otto Porter Jr is difficult. Definitely has to be 3 or more team involved. It would have to be a team that really values cap room. That keeps leading me back to John Wall

For me, the math didn’t add up. If our goal was a championship with this team, then the math had to favor us by a larger margin than it was. Trades are inevitably always going to be addition by subtraction. In the case of the price for this trade, the addition was only going to make us marginally better since the cost was so high. We would essentially lose most of our talent and all trade capital for a single player. That meant we would be locking into a team that has maxed out its roster flexibility and moving forward, would need to depend on buyouts and veteran signings. In other words, what was the point of the trade if it was barely going to get us closer to the championship? It would lock us up for several years!

This is simple, the math did not add up and the Heat’s brass knew it. Trading for Harden with that package would have been shortsighted and a desperation move. “We are one piece away” does not mean trade away a bunch of players that have you at the cusp of being “one piece away”. It means, find a way to add without subtracting much.

Miami wasn't one move away because there would be depth to add but adding an MVP caliber player to Butler, Bam, Dragic and Bradley would make this team a MUCH stronger team then it is currently and more importantly, not allow Brooklyn to add an MVP caliber player with KD.

What "math"? The "math", that depend on the algorithms and data you've decided to utilizing and you can manipulate those to get whatever answer you want. Well, with my math it said that not going into the 2021 cap space stopped Miami from acquiring CP3 before last season and near the deadline Gallinari and it's quite possible either or both of those moves could have helped Miami win a championship last year, we know Miami got close to doing that already so with an even more talented roster maybe they do better not only last year but this year too.

The future "flexibility" starts to disappear after this season and the young players are no longer great value players, they turn into market value players and it'll be tough to move anyone outside of Bam and Herro for a star.

Some more math on salaries that start to tighten flexibility for Miami this summer.
Butler (36 mil)
Bam (28 mil)
* So 64 million for those 2 guys.
Does Miami retain Robinson, if so will it be 15-20 mil a year. Let's say something like Joe Harris got, 16 to 20 million over 4 years, so around 18 mil per year.
Robinson(18)
* Now you're at 82 million for 3 players.
Herro(4)
Precious(3)
* Now you're at 89 million for 5 players with the cap at 112 million next season, so 23 million and I believe the MLE for the rest of the roster to upgrade and fill out the rotation, then fill out the rest of the roster(those can be minimum salary guys).
Does Miami pick up Dragic's 2nd year, do they decline and resign him for 10-15 mil or just let him walk?

People seem to forget at some point these cheap contracts turn into market value contracts and with that, you have to start making some serious decisions on if they're worth it or if you have no other options and possibly overpay to keep someone.

I still don't think Herro will ever be a top 30 player, to think about the type of talent that is around 30, here's SI's players around 30 this year Aldridge, Zion, Kemba, Siakam, Trey, Lowry, Middleton, J.Holiday and if you want to get a little deeper of where Bam and Butler are(20-10), you're looking at talent like B.Simmons, Towns, Tatum, Beal, CP3 and Lillard.

There's a lot of really good players in the NBA, that's why it's so important to get the cream of the crop when you can because those opportunities don't happen all that often.

Houston could also still flip Oladipo, who wanted out of Indiana but landed in another place he doesn’t want to be. League sources say Oladipo still hopes to find himself in Miami.

https://www.theringer.com/nba/2021/1/13/22230340/james-harden-trade-john-wall-houston-rockets

There's you a 20+ ppg 2 way player to go along with Bam and Butler but may cost Miami Herro (which I'd do with a verbal commitment from Oladipo) or maybe Robinson with some draft assets? What Oladipo does for you vs Herro or Robinson, it gives you another good defender along with his scoring which then you gives you a decent chance against defending Brooklyn's big 3, Oladipo on Irving, Butler on Harden and Bam on KD.

If Miami gambles again on FA, Houston could trade Oladipo to another place he likes and extends there or Miami gets into a bidding war for Oladipo and needs to find a way to possibly get max space to sign him which be difficult to do with Bam's max kicking in next to Butler's max.

Slot Machine wrote:What do we think about Andre Drummond? He was traded from Detroit to Cleveland for a 2nd so that’s probably what his asking price is here.

I think I’d do Meyers, Iggy and a 2nd. Money should work or is at least pretty close. I see Drummond as a bench guy who gets spot minutes unless there’s a favorable matchup or one where we need bigs (like against the Lakers). Adding him would give us increased versatility with our lineups for basically giving up nothing.

I don't think seeking bigs without a shot or the ability to switch on the perimeter makes any sense

If the Heat could trade for John Wall and talk TJ Tucker into accepting a buy out and sign here for the MLE, it would be sneaky but a hellava a move. Could possibly work and make a formible team.

Trade:
Houston gets
Goran Dragic
Kelly Olynyk
KZ Okpala
future draft pick

Miami gets
John Wall

PJ Tucker ask for a buyout
Possibly Cousins as well
Miami picks up PJ Tucker and possibly Cousins

PG: Wall - Bradley - Vincent - Nunn
SG: Butler - Herro - Strus
SF: Robinson - Iguodala - Harkless
PF: Tucker - Precious - Haslem
Ce: Adebayo - Leonard - Cousins

This would make a hellava fast pace defensive team.

A contender will give Houston an expiring(s) and draft compensation for Tucker. If Houston is going to operate like Chicago's been doing for decades(cheap), they'd trade Tucker for a 2nd rounder or swap and salaries who cost close to 6.4 million to reach the 125% threshold for nearly 8 million in contract to save some money which Nunn + Harkless + Silva get to be around that amount.

Dragic waiving his no-trade clause to go to hopeless Hou seems far-fetched.

A 3rd team would likely have to get involved; one that Dragic approves of.

It’s a shame Paul George has returned to being Paul George. Really need some Clippers shamblin to throw another whale in the ocean.

Although he is still regular szn P. Reserve judgement until postszn.

I agree though that we should be targeting Dipo and Tucker now as a way of improving our team immediately. This shouldn’t really cost us any major assets - maybe a FRP, Olynyk and Nunn. They’re all movable parts.

Oladipo
Herro
Butler
Tucker
Adebayo

Is a pretty formidable starting 5, with Dragic, Robinson, Bradley, Achiuwa and Leonard off the bench. That works.

Duncan would be pretty stiff to lose his starting spot, but it is what it is. He’ll still play 30 mins a night most nights.

I really don't think Dragic would to too keen on waiving his no-trade clause period.

It would likely only be for a select few teams which makes moving him a difficult thing to do.

I do not believe so, as long as he goes to a competing team.

That is correct but I do not think it will be easy to acquire him. Especially not with the Kendrick Nunn and filler offers every Heat fan trying to give someone.

I would offer the same for Oladipo as I did for Wall. Dragic, Olynyk, KZ and pick for Oladipo and Tucker with a verbal contractual agreement for both. A successful production with Oladipo, puts the Heat in better position to trade for Beal if or when he is put on the market.

Houston have no chance to keep Dipo if he wants to join the Heat as many places reported. We can trade for him for cheap. No need to give up either Herro or Duncan. We can pull this off for much less. Maybe a pick and a salary filler. We can sign him 6 months later so no point giving assests for him.
