1. It's fair. If you don't secure a top 6 spot, you don't "deserve" anything. You earned the right to play and earn those last crappy playoffs spot at 7 and 8.

2. It makes a lot more teams invested in the season, for much longer. Even for us, we cared about those Celtics games because we wanted that 6 seed secured. More meaningful games is a good thing.

3. Wizards for example got destroyed by covid and injuries, but the play in gave them a reason to keep pushing and that resulted in some great games and performances. Without the play in they would've been tanking for months.

4. Curry Vs Lebron for the right to be in the playoffs is going to be epic, what's not to like.


Play-in games are here to stay, the impact is even better then the NBA hoped for. You can bet we'll see them become a regular thing.

Also, with 16 teams making the playoffs, 4 more having an opportunity to get an 8th spot and a few others who tried but didn't make the play ins, the NBA could get more creative with the lottery and just give everyone in the lottery the same chance for any pick and then the rest in the playoffs having their normal draft picks. I really hate tanking but understand how each franchise needs a way to acquire talent, especially if they're not in a favorable location but in a professional league, they need to get rid of as many games being thrown as possible.

With all that said, I'm not seeing anything a midseason tourney would bring other then more money for the NBA. Either the mid season tourney would mean nothing to the players since it's not the playoffs to crown a season champion or it could mean something which would actually devalue the end of the season championship. You can't keep just handing out trophies and not expect something to be devalued.
