MettaWorldPanda wrote:Restricted Free Agency

A restricted free agent (RFA) can sign an offer sheet with any team, but the player’s original team can retain him by matching the terms of that offer. The original team is said to have the “right of first refusal.”

Restricted free agency exists in the following situations:

Following the fourth year of rookie “scale” contracts for former first-round Draft picks.
For all veteran free agents who have been in the NBA for three seasons or less. The exception to this rule is a first-round Draft pick following his second or third season if his team doesn’t exercise its option to extend his rookie-scale contract for the following season. These players then become unrestricted free agents.
A player coming off a two-way contract was on an NBA active or inactive roster for at least 15 days in the season beforehand.

There are five basic options for a restricted free agent:

Accept his team’s prior qualifying offer, play out the season and become a free agent the next summer.
Accept his team’s maximum qualifying offer (where applicable) and play under that long-term deal.
Negotiate a new contract with his original team that is independent of the qualifying/max qualifying offer.
Sign an offer sheet with another team through March 1, which his original team has an opportunity to match.
Negotiate a sign-and-trade if he hasn’t signed an offer sheet with another team.
If there is no qualifying offer, contract or offer sheet signed for one year, the original team can submit a new qualifying offer and the player will be a restricted free agent the next summer.

Offer sheets

When a restricted free agent wants to sign with another team, he and the new team sign an offer sheet. The terms of that deal — which must be for at least two seasons — are given to the player’s original team, which has two days to match. If the team matches, then the player is under contract with his original team, but at the principal terms of the offer sheet. If the team passes on matching within two days, the player is under contract with the new team.

If the player for some reason refuses to report for a physical with the original team within two days of the match, the first refusal exercise notice is in play until the player reports. The original team also can withdraw its first refusal exercise notice if the player doesn’t report for a physical. At that point, the notice and the offer sheet are invalidated and the player becomes a restricted free agent again. He cannot sign with or be acquired by the offer sheet team for one year.

The team making the offer must have enough salary cap room for the offer sheet and must maintain that room until the offer sheet becomes official or the original team exercises the right of first refusal. The original team cannot match an offer greater than its salary cap room. That original team must have room for both the regular salary and any unlikely bonuses the offer sheet includes

Teams with projected cap space numbers. Numbers could be a little off but a general idea who we are competing against.

Knicks- 63-72 max million
Spurs- 47-51 max million
Thunder- 43 million
Mavs- 34 million
Heat- 27 million
Cavs- 24 million
Raptors- 22 million
Hornets- 21 million
Bulls- 14 million

Some other teams can open up space but it gets more complicated. A team like the Pels can open up 19 million in space but that means they are not signing Lonzo Ball. Highly doubtful they let Lonzo walk without a S&T trade deal to the team of his choosing. Knicks are rumored to be a top destination.

One thing is for sure. The Knicks and Spurs are going on a shopping spree. Spurs and Mavs both would seem like teams that would have a lot of interest in Duncan.

My goodness Knicks :o

In the past this is when they overpay chit players like Dennies Schorder and burst into flames but they can do some damages if they don't mess around

For whom though? The FA class is pretty hum drum. As soon as Kawhi professes his love to LA, there's little left. Unless they want to contribute to CP3's retirement fund.

Knicks will over pay someone. Could be Lonzo. They are also said to be looking heavily into trading for Lillard. They have the assets to do it if that’s what Lillard wants.

Who do they have to entice Portland? I can think of RJ, Quickley and...Mitchell... Don't know the depth of riches they have.

If Lonzo gets paid big, that'd be something. I like him well enough but he kind of stagnates in the halfcourt. What do you think he will fetch?

Why would Dame want the Knicks? They’re a middle-tier team and to get him they have to gut their ability to upgrade.

Trading for Dame is a prospect that many teams can’t really maximise. His list will be small and the market will be pretty dry.

The Knicks are fool's gold. Whoever gets Lonzo Ball will have overpaid for a pedestrian point guard. Ball isn't even among the top-15 point guards in the L. However, there will probably be someone stupid enough to give him $70-80M.

As for Lillard, Denver makes a lot of sense, but they'd need a 3rd team to get a deal done. Indiana would be able to build a package around Brogdon and Turner. I imagine Philly would entertain a Simmons for Lillard swap. Miami will definitely try to trade for Lillard and can put together a competitive package, but the lack of draft assets is killer. Miami would need a 3rd team willing to swap draft picks for Miami's young guys. I'd even speculate Miami would need a 4th team.

Brooklyn could be a player if Dinwiddie opts in. They'd have Dinwiddie, Shamet, and Jordan to dangle.

Barrett,Toppin,Quickley and 1st round picks in 2021,2023, and pick swaps in 2022 and 2024 was the rumored offer. Knicks would then fill the team out in free agency. Potential targets would be combinations of DeRozan, Oubre, Ball, Kaminsky, and a prayer shot at getting Lillard to recruit Leonard to New York.
