MidSeason Report Card 2022

Here we are at the midway point my fellow Heat fanatics! I have decided to put my cumulative thoughts on the season thus far into a report card.

Without further adieu...here... we... go!

Coaching: A
Fantastic stuff. Spo has stayed true to the foundations of his system and has seen improvement from pretty much all of his developmental players. Spo knows how to squeeze productivity out from his players as long as they can fit into a niche in his system.

G. Vincent: A
This dude looked China-bound until his shot started falling and he cleaned up his turnovers. Now he looks like the second coming of Kendrick Nunn. Defense and effort was never an issue and now he can shoot.

C. Martin: A
Martin always had hops, defense and a slash game but lately his three ball has been on point which opens up his explosive slashing attack even more. Great improvement and A+ effort. Can't ask for more.

B. Adebayo: C
I have high expectations of Bam. Injury has cut his evaluation but I was disappointed with his lack of confidence and development as an offensive player and his lack of shot blocking. This is the season where I think Bam can be labeled a pure defensive power forward ala K. Garnett, with a lack of the offensive polish that Garnett had. Dribbling issues limited Bam's effectiveness yet he still put up nice stats, a token to his potential.

T. Herro: C
Herro also has high expectations from me after a sublime start to the season. Unfortunately he has fallen back to Earth since that productivity. He hasn't meshed well with Butler in their limited time together in the starting lineup which was a surprise. For me, Herro projects to be more of a JR Smith type of player, an allstar that can get you a title as a starter, than the franchise player many peg him to become. Still great though, but Harlow fans will hate on this projection. Herro plays so out of character and his regression is so profound I think he may need a different type of position coach to develop him.

K. Lowry: B
Lowry started the season on a shooting slump as he got acquainted with the team. After all of the injuries I'm not sure he is any more acquainted but he has provided nice leadership and playmaking stability in limited moments. Enough for me to label him a successful offseason signing and a kind of Chris Paul-lite on this team in regards to what the Suns have going with Paul.

Tucker: A
Tucker has busted his butt and has oozed Heat culture, heart and effort throughout the year as well as been money from his designated shooting zones. I'm proud of this dude and glad he is on the squad.

Dedmon: B
Dedmon has done everything asked as backup C. He has even hit threes at a decent clip. Effort, shot-blocking and energy all come in good supply from the dead man.

Duncan Robinson: D
Frustrating to see him struggle with his shot which is his most important element. He still commands respect and pulls defenders to him but his lack of defense and strength puts lineups at a disadvantage also. The Heats X factor.

Strus: A
Luckily, Strus has emerged. Bringing an elite 3 ball as well as more strength and slashing ability to the table the Heat haven't missed a beat plugging in Strus when Duncan has been off.

K. Guy: B
The new guy can do no wrong yet. Keep bombing away at will and take advantage of the spacing provided for you.

Yurtseven: B
Yurt is on a tear racking up double-doubles. At times he has seemed timid but as he grows comfortable he seems to be the future of the Heat at the center position. You can't teach length. He's got length and a shooters touch.

J. Butler: B
Butler has looked great this year. His midrange has been pristine and his three point shot seems to be coming back a little bit. Unfortunately, the injury bug has hit him and he hasn't gotten his fitness game right. He may be trying to rush back, causing more ailments. But when he is playing he has been a top 5 player in the league.

Morris: Incomplete
Morris was playing well until the Jokic incident. I can't really give him a grade yet. I expect him to get back into shape and finish the second half of the year in some kind of rhythm.

Haslem: A
The old cap'n has shown that he is the craftiest of crafty vets.

Overall Grade: A
With Bam out the Heat could have collapsed but have actually shown that they are indeed well coached and have a deep, intelligent core system driving their success. This isn't a star-reliant team.

Nice report! :)

I'm ok with most of grades except for, most notably, Herro C. He's cooled down and shown some inconsistency lately for sure, but he's come up big in so many occasions (even in cold shooting games) and won us games throughout 1st half of the szn. B+ for me

A little recency bias is shown throughout and Herro is graded harshly for it. I remember people wanting to get rid of Vincent so bad for the first month and half. Vincent is a solid B to me.

Herro also has had a slightly better season than Lowry so far imo, who's also very up and down if not more. And Herro should definitely have the higher grade than Kyle Guy, who's played 4 games. I'm the biggest fan, but Guy is very much incomplete. Lastly UD A and Yurts B? :dontknow: I'm ok with giving both guys B given a curve.

I guess it's about my expectations

pretty much nailed it IMO, good job.

Herro is easily a B+ for me, thats my biggest disagreement.

Nice write up. My differences:

Lowry: A
Despite Butler missing 41% of the season and Bam missing 54%, Herro and Tucker missing 6 games, Duncan being hot basura and his inevitable replacement Strus missing 11 games, Markieff missing the last 29 games, Dipo yet to play a single game, a tough schedule with 59% away games and 2 WC road trips and 2 other 4-game road trips... all that chit and yet we've had a top 5 SRS for the entire season prior to our depleted road losses to healthy Kings and Warriors teams dropping us to 6th by decimal points. We've somehow kept winning through all the injury/covid bullchit and the reason for that is the fact that Lowry has somehow managed to play in 35/39 games. Lowry had developed a rep in Toronto of being able to turn water into wine with his teammates, and here we are watching G-leaguer after G-leaguer flourish at the hand of Klow. Sure he can improve his 3P% (think he will, he was 38% on high volume the previous 6 seasons), but that A grade TS gives for the team overall (and I agree with) is on the back of Lowry and for that, I have to give him an A

Herro: B
His overall efficiency is disappointing but when you look deeper into it, it's not as bad as it would seem imo. His TS+ (TS relative to the league where 100 = average) is a subpar 95, which matches last season and would suggest no improvement, but his 3P% and FT% have improved (36% to 38%, 80% to 86%) with the former being absolutely crucial to this team while Duncan struggles. The issue regarding Herro's inefficiency comes down to his 2pt shot selection and continued inability to get to the FT line. His FT rate has decreased with higher usage and having so many guys out of the lineup has cast Herro into an almost Kobe Bryant type role at times where he's trying to create bailout buckets out of thin air and he's just not there yet. The inability to get to the line has just compounded this. As a result he's been taking a lot of low % 2s late in the shotclock and his 2P% has gone from 50% to 45%, dragging his overall TS down with it. It's unrealistic to expect his FT rate to improve this season since he still needs another offseason of strength work, but it's very realistic that the quality of his scoring opportunities can improve once we actually have a healthy rotation

Bam: D
Perhaps I have to adjust the expectations I developed after we maxed him, but even prior to the injury his play had really dropped off on both ends. I won't cite any specific stat because they're all down outside of rebounding (which I attribute to Tucker doing the dirty work down low). He simply needs to be much better

Duncan: F
I thought re-signing him to that contract was the right move but cmon son. His career trajectory is starting to scare me; last season when he was 41% on 3s we were all just waiting until he snapped back into his 45% form from 2020. Well now at 35% we'd all be thrilled if he'd just get back to that 41%. And I don't know but it seems to me like when his shot struggles, that bleeds into everything else like he's shook and becomes even worse on the ball and defensively than he normally is (tbf tho I actually don't think he's as bad a defender as some might insist). Only bright side is that his 3P% has progressively gotten better over the season: 32% in Oct --> 33% in Nov --> 38% in Dec --> 67% in Jan (massive 1 game sample lol)

+bonus

KZ Okpala: B
Okpala has played top level defense and has kept his efficiency up with less ISO attempts. He actually has played very productive minutes, a step up from last season.
