Herro backup PG for the foreseeable future?

Post#1 » by somerandomdude » Sat Feb 5, 2022 4:46 pm

With the return of Lowry, we'd expect to see Herro go back at SG.

In the Spurs game, however, Tyler Herro subbed in for Kyle Lowry both times and handled PG duties even with Gabe Vincent on the floor.

Not only that, but Herro and Lowry did see time on the court together in that game and Herro was still tasked with playmaking.

Judging from what I've seen, Herro's not ready to be a PG in the playoffs, so I doubt it stays this way, but it is interesting that Spo has kept him at PG even after Lowry returned - even more so with Lowry and Herro on the court, at least as far as playmaking goes.

My theory is that Spo wants him to work on making his teammates better and improving his handles. In that sense, I think this is a good role for him because the hallmark of any great player is making their teammates better and they're also expected to handle the ball in pressure situations.

Either way, I think the return of Oladipo should answer once and for all as to whether Herro remains in the backup PG role.

He will always be the 4th playmaker no matter who he subs in for. 5th when dipo comes back. His handle is still weak and decision making is iffy. He’s in there to score

Agree he's not ready.

His handle's gotten better, but not where it needs to be.

Decision making, though? Not so sure. I mean, even Lowry makes bad decisions, with his full court passes that result in turnovers. Herro isn't that bad.

As far as being in there to score, I think part of the reason he's at PG is to put him in positions to attack and either score or create plays.

In the end, I think it'll be Lowry and Jimmy that handle the bulk of the playmaking, with Bam, Dipo, and Herro in measured doses.

until we have better options I think so. The ideal guy would be a speedy PG that can shoot the 3 and also setup the bigs. Herro sis ok as a backup but is more suited to be a SG. D Fox would be perfect or someone with similar attributes.
1. Herro 2. Bol Bol 3. Seko 4. Bruno
unless we trade up for Barrett or trade down for PJ Washington

With Dipo's imminent return, how much do we see Herro in the following:

* Bringing the ball up
* Playmaking

I think ballhandling duties will see the biggest drop. Aside from concerns about his handle / decision making, it's pretty tiresome to have to bring up the ball constantly.

As far as playmaking goes, Herro will split with Dipo, perhaps. Since Lowry's return, he's been used more in the SG role when him and Herro play, so I expect we might see the same from Dipo.
