The Retooling Thread: What do we do now
Let's assume the Marion deal goes down.
We look like this;
PG: Jwill, Banks, Quinn
SG: Wade, Davis, Cook
SF: Marion, Wright
PF: Haslem, Johnson
C: Blount, Barron
Expirings are JWill and Davis.
So what is everyone's preference for the "next trade"?
Do we trade the expirings for picks? Trade them for players such as Navarro? Hang on to them and try to sign them for less next season?
What are you scenarios?
(I am putting this out there cos I am crap at this stuff and want to know what our options might be)

I'd say we play this season out barring a major player coming up in a trade at the deadline (like a guy around 26-28 years old) who is a legit max guy.
The beauty of this trade is that for Wade, we have:
07-08 - Max contract worth of expirings (Ricky, J-Will)
08 offseason - potential $18 million under the cap if Marion leaves
08-09 - Max contract worth of expirings (Marion and Smush)
09 offseason - will be around $20 million under the cap potentially
09-10 - Max contract worth of expirings (Haslem and Blount)
10 offseason - Only Wade, Banks, our draft pick and Daequan (assuming we take the option) on the cap, so potentially 30 million under the cap
So all the Heat should aim to do, is find Wades running mate for the next decade, don't panic, keep space and build up the team, get more draft picks or whatever, but don't cripple ourselves, and don't get a Larry Hughes type just because you have cap space.
We could assess Marion for the rest of the season to see if he's worth it. If he fits, we low ball him for an extension of around 9-10 million per. I don't think any team will take him for what he wants, so it's no biggie.
He may bolt, but then we can go for Brand, who I still think is a great fit, a post player who can mesh with Wade and is only 28. That falls through and we should just sit on the Wade and draft pick (Beasley, Rose) and wait for the next firesale on a guy. We just should not panic and think long term. If noone good comess along, remain flexible and build with support players for 2010.

Who are the guys that are "gettable" for J-Will/Davis?
Jermaine O'neal?
Elton Brand?
Eddy Curry?
Not sure who else might be available but I really don't rate O'neal and Curry is out of the question.
Brand however is very intriguing; if we could move J-Will and Davis for Brand I would do it in a heartbeat. Perhaps then we could move Haslem for something of need.
If we made this move it would really help us achieve a high pick as we would be starting Banks or Quinn at the PG with very little depth behind our guys.

You might be underestimating the sheer and utter crap on this team. Wade isn't healthy, hasn't been all year. He has what... single digit dunks on the season? He has no explosion like he's had in the past. It's actually amazing he's still able to get close to his production the past few years before this one. Outside of a not healthy Wade, we've got d-league quality players. Even with Marion, I can't see any scenario this team makes the playoffs.

how often does the worst team get the first pick?
not very often, and anyway this draft has serious potential

Anyone hear the Riley interview with the Big-O? It's on the wqam site, but I'm not sure WHEN that interview occurred. Riley was talking in generics, but basically said players who don't work hard or give up when there is no hope really pisses him off. If you are paddling in a boat and some give up then you throw them overboard and stick with the guys who haven't quit.
I wonder if he was talking about Shaq?? I think so.

I know he kinda sucks, but I will have to ask:
How do you guys feel about this:
Heat trade:
Alonzo Mourning
Jason Williams
Mark Blount
Bulls trade:
Ben Wallace
Chris Duhon
Dont flame me. I'm just asking. Miami will most likely need a Center. I dont see anyone else available. Wallace isnt that great so you would still be able to lose games and go after Beasley, Rose, Jordan. Alonzo expires after this year and wont come back to play with lotto team. Jason Williams seems like a guy you guys are trying to get rid of and Mark Blount is a decent back up center at best.
Wallace expires at the time you guys would love to have cap room at and Duhon expires at the end of this year......
Your thoughts?
Derrick Rose 10 / 11 Stat Prediction: 24.4ppg, 4.7rpg, 8.6apg, 0.44bpg, 1.4spg, 49% FG, 38% 3FG, 83% FT, 37mpg

I like Duhon, but that's a lateral move. First of all we're trading 2 centers for 1, so that doesn't help us at the 1. Second, trading Blount who is good offense/no defense for Wallace who is no offense/good defense doesn't really do anything for us.

Thats a fair answer...Do you think there is a way to get u guys Mike Miller and take Ben Wallace off our hands?
The Heat with a lineup of:
Wallace
Haslem
Marion
Miller
Wade
That looks pretty good on paper. Theres plenty of firepower.....You could still end up with a nice draft pick this year too.
BTW: Mourning doesnt look like he's coming back this year, and if he does he's gonna retire next year anyhow. The big thing I was proposing for you guys was cap space when LeBron, Bosh are free agents........
