Marion already on the move?

Post#1 » by LEIF » Fri Feb 8, 2008 3:25 pm

http://www.hoopsworld.com/HeadlineStori ... STORY_5493

The rumors floating around - published and unpublished - suggest that the HEAT aren't planning to keep Shawn Marion.

One version of this rumor has the Dallas Mavericks involved. We've heard that it might be as part of a three-team deal that would land Jason Kidd in Dallas (the Mavs don't need Marion when they have Josh Howard), but then we've also heard that it might just be with Dallas. The issue with this particular rumor is that the Mavericks have been adamant in saying they're not dealing Howard or Devin Harris - and one of them would certainly have to go if the team were to acquire either Kidd or Marion. Avery Johnson denies his team is looking at any trades and Mark Cuban refuted this rumor specifically, saying he has not spoken with the HEAT at all. The Mavericks are pretty straightforward in these matters. If they say they're not dealing, they most likely aren't.

I know hoopsworld isnt the most reliable source but they did mention the Shaq for Marion deal very early on (before any other website I frequent).

personally unless we get something back that knocks our socks off, no thanks. not even sure if I like Josh Howard or Devin Harris for Marion.

if we could get something like Mike Miller, Kwame's expiring and Memphis' 08 1st rounder for him I would have to think about it. but why would Memphis do that?

I doubt this happens and hope it doesnt.

If Memphis made that offer, it'd be crazy to pass up.

Too bad it wouldn't even go down in NBA 2k8.....

I dont think Riley would have brought up the Jordan/Pippen comparison if the goal was to immediately trade Marion

In my opinion (which probably does not matter to Riley) is we should hold on to Marion. I dont think we can get a better *complete* player than Marion in the FA market (not even the likes of Brand, Arenas etc).

We could sign Marion to 4 year extension, trade J.Will+Halsem for Ron Artest , and draft a C/PF in the NBA draft.

This way, we can contend for the championship in 2-3 years. Any future plans which look beyond 2-3 years to contend will make our franchise like Memphis, Clippers etc (1 or 2 good years but always rebuilding....)

I agree with you on Marion - not really on get Artest.
I remember when the Dolphins were perennial contenders

I would love to see Marion here longterm, but it would not shock me at all if we were to turn around and deal him for a more appropriate rebuilding package. Perhaps a deal where we see expiring deals, a useful player whom we can keep longterm, and picks coming back our way. I don't know.

Obviously, if we could do the above mentioned Memphis deal (Kwame, Miller, and their first rounder) I'd be all over it, but the Grizz aren't on crack.

No, if Marion is moved, it will have to be to a team that believes they can contend, but how many team that are that close have the kind of rebuilding package we'd need to move him? I can't think of any, offhand.

Personally, I really believe Marion will be here. I want Marion here. I think he'll make us better.

I think we can do a very quick rebuild around Wade and Marion, either by keeping Haslem (and Blount, unfortunately) and supplementing them with our pick, a trade of one of our expirings for a useful player, and the MLE and LLE (and this is the most likely scenarion), or by moving Haslem (and Blount) for expirings so we can make a push for Brand, use our lottery pick on the BPA, and supplementing them with the MLE and LLE (I'd love it, but I doubt we can pull it off).

Either way, I think Marion stays...

FWIW, Kwame can't be re-packaged for 60 days, or something like that.

Yeah, that's true. On top of that, they obviously have no reason to do so. They're obviously trying to streamline their payroll. They don't need to take on Marion's gargantuan deal...

We already will have a nice pick next year and free agents to pick up.

If we can make another trade with guys like Jwill, maybe Ricky Davis and get something nice in return, then we won't be that far from being rebuilt.

I want to keep Marion. He has the intangibles you don't find very often.

I guess it should be mentioned somewhere that Marion is much more productive at PF than SF. And in our current structure, Haslem is locked in at PF, slotting Marion into his less-productive SF slot.

Here's what Marion does on a 36-minute basis at each position ...

SF - 13.7ppg / 8.4 reb / 1.1 blk / 54% eFG%

PF - 17.0ppg / 10.5 reb / 1.7blk / 59% eFG%

One looks like Dorell Wright, one looks like a franchise building block.

he can be traded by himself only, like Rasheed was from Atlanta to Detroit a few games after they got him... the receiving team can receive a package but he has to leave solo

I think Wade/Marion pairing is worth building around. IMO we need to trade our expirings deals and obtain more depth. Davis for Miller would be one move. I would like to see how JWill runs with Matrix and Wade but I would trade him for some front court depth in a second. With our top pick we need either a backcourt mate for Wade or the best power player in the draft, preferbly with size. We should use our MLE and LLE to sign veteran role players.

I hope Marion sticks around, I agree that swapping our expiring contracts for clear cut rotation players that fit around Wade/Matrix is the way to go. then use our lottery pick to fill whatever hole we cant via trades at this deadline.

use our MLE/LLE at two or three more solid contributors.( a shooter, rebounder and shot blocker for example)

I have faith in a 100% healthy DWade to do the rest......

We need shooters. If we don't get Miller via trade then I would definitely go for James Jones as a FA this summer (cheaper option).
