Dont know if you guys caught this or not but during the game they played Riley's pre game conference where he said he almost pulled the trigger on a trade for an unamed player. He said he was dissapointed and felt like the Heat took a step back in the rebuilding process by not making a move. Who do you guys think he was talking about? My guess is Mike Miller but they prob wanted us to take Cardinals contract in return. If thats the case im glad we didnt make a move.

I dunno ... he was so whistful about it and full of regret that I seriously doubt it was Miller. I don't think Riles wouldn't get so teary-eyed about a jumpshooting SF who would probably come off the bench for us.

My guess, judging by how hurt he seemed by it, is that it was some kind of big man. Maybe Jermaine O'Neal, maybe Curry ... who knows, maybe he even had something for Brand?

I missed it. So he was saying HE didn't pull the trigger and he regrets it, or it fell apart and he regrets that? If latter, likely a Brand or something, if the former, I'm worried it was Curry.

he made it sound like they were on the edge of it, didn't really say how it fell apart, but he was pretty down in the mouth & wistful about it, almost startlingly so...I can't say I remember him ever being this way for a move they didn't make (he never usually talks about it)

Riles said we took a step back on trade deadline day, and could have kept the momentum from the Marion trade going if the trade was made. My 1st thought was a luxury tax issue but I don't think he would go public with it.

But you think Riley was acting. Trying to make people feel sorry but in his mind know that if he made a move, the Heat would take themselves out of a shot at Beasley.

Because some of the moves he makes in games (Playing Jwill and Icky late in games) can be questioned.

yea he looked depressed..like we used out on a Brand/Arterst all star type of guy rather than a Eddy Curry/Mike Miller.

So it was Miller, and we were willing to take on Cardinal as well, not willing to give up an additional pick. Good I say, but definately shows you Riley's mindset. I think it is obvious he doesn't expect Marion to opt out, or will opt out and get a cheaper long term deal.

The Heat went as far as to agree to take on the additional two years, at $14 million total, of seldom-used Memphis forward Brian Cardinal for the expiring contracts of guard Jason Williams and forward Ricky Davis.

From there, Memphis tried to add additional money to the deal, such as center Jason Collins, with the Heat beginning to weigh the finances a bit closer.

Once the conversation got beyond that point, the Heat apparently pulled back, unwilling to extend a future first-round pick, with one already due to the Timberwolves from the Davis deal.

Riley, though, appeared torn Saturday that he could have added a shooter such as Miller to an evolving perimeter mix that now also includes forward Shawn Marion.

"I think we lost a little momentum. That's what disappointed me a little bit," Riley said. "I would have taken on one more contract.

yeah - what's the point of trading Pau for expirings and youth and then keep Miller & Cardinal when you could have gotten another 14 million or so under the cap this year. Idiots.

I think that riley wanted to do j will, davis for cardinal and miller with the idea of not resigning wright (couldnt afford him)...collins just puts us in the tax and is so not worth it....and they wanted a 1st rd pick...the nerve!

I would have gone as far as to give j will, davis and cook for miller, cardinal, lowry...but thats the absolute max...

and it's not like they traded Miller for a better or different package elewhere... their strategy makes no sense. Trading Pau for what they got was pointless if they didn't completely tear it down. Rumors during the deadline say Wallace got criticized so hard for what he got back from LA that he was gunshy for his next move and wanted to get more than what it was worth back to prove he wasn't a doofus. With Davis & J-Will for Miller & Cardinal, Memphis would have only had 30 million in committed salaries for next season, about 27 million under the cap.
