It surprises me he's talking 2010 and not 2009.

we have cap room after 2009, I think he probably means for the having a guy for the 2010 season

We also have cap room after 2010, when Blount and Haslem, not to mention Wade, expire. If we let both of them walk and do not sign anybody longterm, we have a lot of cap room.
Obviously, that means not taking on any long-term deals (Marion extension, Dorell this year, MLE this year, signing somebody in the summer of 2009) - not sure this is gonna end up happening, but it is a completely feasible scenario

He's always in the news talking about what he wants.
I can't think of any GM/President/Coach that does more postering through the media than Riley.

So this basically means that we're not going to extend Marion?

They all do it. It's just that when Riley speaks, it's bigger news.

Riley is just doing his job
Stir up interests in the pick
If a club offer a (Brand,MELO,Areans(fa) or shaq jk)
then Pat has to think about it...
But I feel B-easy is the best player in the draft
Rose is the best prospect

oh and by the way, if he meant 2010
that's the year Wade, LBJ, and Bosh all expire when they set up their micro contracts...
we've always had the LBJ conspiracy theory on here off and on since then...
don't be surprised to see him not extend Matrix, AND not sign a max player next off season, roll the cap money over to 2010 offseason...
Wade, LeBron, Beasley, 2-3-4[/img]

I would bet this all goes down the drain. Basically throwing away 2 seasons (keep in mind to maximize cap space we have to avoid using the MLE). Just running some very quick numbers even not using the MLE with Wade, Banks 3 future #1's (including this year) and cap holds we're looking at 37 millionish in salaries. Again, assuming we signed absolutely no one long term. The chance at 1 max player. Throw away 2 seasons for the chance at Lebron or Bosh? Eh...

If we draft Beasley we should then trade Marion since he won't be extended for solutions at PG AND or C that expires before 2010 offseason.

if we get LBJ or Bosh, there will be a lot of desk soaking going on

I posted this in another thread, but what I really think is going on is he is trying to manipulate marion to opt out this summer. There is no need for him to go "public" to let other GM's know that the pick is available and that the team is looking to add a major free agent. I think he wants to make Marion feel like he's going to be the third wheel again (the reason he wanted Phoenix to trade him) so that he opts out this summer while he is still young. Riley is a master motivator, but in this case could be trying to motivate Marion to leave...

Yep. Why not. We're in a position right now where we can build a strong young team with great potential, groom them, build chemistry, then bring in a major star like James who would be the perfect teammate to them all. Bringing in James to add to Beasley, Wade, Wright, Cook, Banks, Haslem (?), another lotto pick (Thabeet?), etc. would be championship caliber. There would be no stopping that team on defense.
