After much contemplation...

...and I pray that I am not wrong, but if the Heat wanted Bayless and Mayo's "secret" workouts to be secret, nothing would have been leaked. As Pat Riley's track record suggests, it is the player that is least talked about that is the guy ultimately chosen. Talk of Kirk Hinrich, TJ Ford, and Chris Kaman netted Dwayne Wade. Nobody even spoke of Dequan Cook interest last year, but apparently, he was flown in days before the draft for a secret workout that remained a secret. Beasley wasn't made available to the media and was in town for 2 days. In a draft where there is no secret that their are two top talents, it would be irresponsible for Riley not to pay his due diligence. Especially as its becoming clearer that Rose will be taken first. Why not stir the pot right? Maybe a team buckes and trades the farm for a talent like Beasley. Ultimately, I think Miami realizes that it won't be able to match Beasley's talent level in terms of compensation and picks him.

Furthermore, and this is most important, is what you are building. Dwayne Wade is your franchise player, and IMO, the only player on your team that is untouchable. Shawn Marion is an asset as is Udonis Haslem. Don't give me the whole "logjam at the forward position" excuse. As Spoelstra and Riley have both been quoted as saying, "you take the best available player if he's there". You can't tell me that Mayo or Bayless are better than Beasley. Back to Wade...you also can not tell me that a converted shooting guard, which is basically what Mayo and Bayless are, mesh with Dwayne Wade in the backcourt. Won't that take shots away from Wade? Why not a PG who can distribute? Even DJ Augustin makes more sense here. The Chauncey Billups and Gilbert Arenas comparisons are flattering, but aren't they both on the trade block right now? Yes, their is the Brandon Roy example, but Roy didn't have a dynamic shooting guard that he plays next to. He is the dynamic guard who can score and distribute. This all goes out the window in the event of a trade down, but as I reiterate, the compensation needs to be substantial. So to review, not only is Beasley the best talent available (and in the whole draft), but despite what the so-called experts are saying, he's actually a better fit with the Heat than Bayless and Mayo are.

Good post. If Pat Riley really thinks Beasley is not that good of a player, i'm not going to question him, but I think he does.

Pat Riley loves pure point guards and neither Bayless nor Mayo appear to be pure points and Riley loves veteran proven points, not rookie points. Plus Bayless and Mayo's are not great playmakers according to NBAdraft.net so what would be the point in taking them? Maybe Riley would be interested in drafting them with a second lotto pick, but I think this whole Mayo-Bayless talk is just smoke.

yeh riley wont let know what he intends too. thats my point since we did the lottery.

is he know publicly? no young man, he doesnt want people to see what he wants, and whenever theres pat riley, theres something fishy

i agree if we indeed set a "secret"workout, then why did they un-secreted it? and as i know yeh daequan wasnt even discussed and so as wade, wright and simien.

riley wont let people know, and whoever belives this
'source''saying we will take mayo, dont be assured, when is the last time riley praised someone publicly and even intended to draft him? nothing, and it seems he's downgrading beasley and says if we get hi, we''ll trade him asap, could that be cos he likes beasley and perhaps to make other teams ---- their ---- so its a damn good offer ala dwight/lebron?

notin knows except god and riley what will happen in 20 hrs, trust me.

Great post and I agree completely that Beasley has to be the pick and it must be kept, as he is by far the best player in this draft and actually, the best fit with Wade. Now that it looks like Marion is going to be traded, we no longer have the logjam at PF/SF that everyone mentioned along with having two players in Marion and Beasley who were somewhat similar. This is simple....draft and keep Beasley and trade Marion for another high lotto pick for B. Lopez or Mayo/Bayless, and if we decide on Lopez, trade Haslem for Heinrich. Seems simple enough for me!!

Giving up Beasley may be a lot. But between he and Marion (an All Star), the Heat could get a couple of veterans and a slightly later pick and have done some significant rebuilding in just one move.

I think Riley may actually be REALLY concerned that Chicago could take Beasley #1 overall and he is trying to bring down his value by raising all these concerns......I dont see any way we DONT draft and keep BEasy tonight...Marion is in for a lame duck season and Beasley will be an instant TOP talent replacement at the 3-4 spots when Marion walks after this season or we trade him

I hope we draft Beasley and deal Marion tonight for whatever we can get + another lottery pick (pick 6 from NY or pick 7 from LAC)

if we indeed trade down I want OJ Mayo AND we MUST rid ourselves of Blount and hopefully Banks contracts........its hard to argue with the addition of Mayo to Wade, Marion and Haslem with a chance at MAJOR MAJOR cap space after this upcoming season honestly I see why Riley would explore this option.

You are thinking too much of the word "secret". First I don't recall it being called a "secret" workout but instead a "last minute" workout. Pat Riley has done so several times in the past with players he is REALLY interested in namely Lamar Odom and last year Dequan Cook. Odom was almost acquired back then for PJ before the Grizz changed their mind. DQ, well you know where he ended up.

I wouldn't underestimate the meaning of these last minute workouts. I think there is legit interest there. Maybe Riles was just looking for one last assurance that taking Beasley and his immature personality was worth the passing on Mayo or trading back for Bayless.

FWIW Espnews ticket has been called it a "secret" workout for about 12 hours yesterday, they may still be doing so.

"Secret" workout is just a headline. How can a workout be secret when the players speak about after openly. The Heat brought in several college players for their 2nd round pick and we knew about it AFTER it happened. Do we go around a call those workouts "secret" as well?

But since it involves a team surrounded by possibilities, "secret" sells. This is the second time both Mayo and Bayless workout for Miami anyways. Either way, I think there is legit interest there but not a "secret" interest.

In the end, I believe he will select Beasley. He may be an 'undersized' PF, but this guy can score anywhere at will, and Riley out of all people knows that you win championships with post presence. I hope he doesn't fall for this PG BS. You don't need so much a distributing PG alongside Wade, as you do with someone who can knock down jumpers and take pressure off of him.
