Cap Situation for next summer (2009)

Post#1 » by Heat11114 » Fri Jun 27, 2008 5:50 am

Here it is...

Wade 15,779,912
Blount 7,962,500
Udonis 7,100,000
Beasley 4,638,600
Banks 4,464,000
James Jones 4,420,000
Cook 1,362,120
Chalmers 735,000
4 Roster spots: 457,488 x4= 1,830,352

Total: 48,292,484
Salary Cap in 2009/2010: 61,897,220
CAP SPACE: 13,604,736

This assumes...
1) We lose our 09 1st to Minnesota
2) We don't resign Wright
3) The cap goes up by the same % in 09/10 as it did in 08/09.

Free Agents in 2009
Unrestricted
Carlos Boozer (PO)
Mehmet Okur (PO)
Elton Brand (potentially)
Lamar Odom
Shawn Marion
Drew Gooden
Allen Iverson
Jason Kidd
Hidayet Turkoglu (PO)
Andre Miller
Grant Hill
Mike Bibby
Desmond Mason
Chris Wilcox

We definitely need to think long and hard about using our MLE this year.

For reference sake here is how a offer starting at 13,604,736 breaks down...

Year 1: 13,604,736
Year 2: 14,693,115
Year 3: 15,781,494
Year 4: 16,869,873
Year 5: 17,958,252

Total 78,907,470
Average per year: 15,781,494

Or we can sign someone to a 1 year deal with a team option.

I think it's relatively safe to say no one who's worth the full MLE is gonna take that type of deal when they're being offered 3-4-5 years elsewhere. We would end up with someone of Smush Parker's caliber.

What about a Kwame Brown or James Jones? You can always over pay them the first year.

I hate the idea of Kwame Brown (which is well known) We might as well just keep Haslem if we're willing to pay him money. James Jones doesn't really impress me. Short of someone like Mo Williams like last year (Who obviously we ended up not getting) I don't see us using the the MLE.

James Jones is a GREAT shooter, so I think he would be decent.

Even though Kwame sucks, he's semi-athletic and is at least a solid post defender.

But I kind of agree on not using it. We aren't going to do anything this year, unless we trade Marion for someone like Boozer or Brand (which I hope not because I really want to watch a wade/marion/beasley trio for a year).

I say Kwame Brown for 1 yr 5 million. He gets a year to prove his worth and raise his value, miami gets a Center for a year.

I love Haslem but what do you guys think about trading him to Indiana for Jeff Foster? Foster's contract is one year shorter then UD's (so it's an expiring, and its about the same size as Haslem's). That fills the center void for this year, and also allows us to use the full MLE this year and still sign a max player in 09. We could even re-sign Foster after this season.

I think a Duhon type would take 1 yr, full MLE if we're looking PG. Other names: Arroyo, Dooling.

If we're looking center, someone like Elson or Lo Wright would do 1 yr, $3 mill. Not like they're much upgrade from what we have, but it would provide depth and options for Spoelstra, while maintaining max cap room 12 months from now.

I don't see spending too much on a PG in free agency unless we miraculously dump Banks... Banks, Quinn, and Chalmers + Wade (who will be handling the ball a lot anyway), we seem pretty set #s wise.

LOVE this idea. Foster is one of the best defensive and rebounding centers in the league ... shot-blocking aside. He can take either frontcourt assigment straight-up (C or PF), thus freeing Beasley from typical rookie foul trouble and allowing him to focus on boards and running the court. Foster, like Haslem, exemplifies the hustle and team-first commitment we need around Wade/Beasley.

Most importantly, as stated above, Foster expires in 12 months. Giving us a total of $25 million in cap room 12 months from now, or allowing us to use the full MLE right now and still retain $19 million in cap room.

So it solves needs, makes us better, and frees us up to use the MLE or add two max-type guys in 12 months.

No idea if Indiana would do it. But I bet we could find a 3rd team to give them what they'd want (expiring, plus young prospect).

I like the Udonis for Foster idea too. I wonder if Indy would be interested. It's hard to tell exactly what they are doing, so it's hard to gauge whether they would have interest. Foster is better, but Udonis is a lot younger and a much better scorer. I guess it would probably depend on what they think of Hibbert and Harrison.

I guess the question is, who are we targeting next offseason since now we have Beasley at the PF spot. Do we go for Brand and Boozer still while trying to get rid of Marion? or do we extend him to something reasonable and secure the SF spot for the next 3-4 years?
Is having Marion/Beasley/Wade + 08 MLE + 09 MLE + 08or09 LLE + Wright, Haslem, Cook etc better than to have Beasley/Wade and Brand or Boozer with no MLE or LLE at all?

I'm planning on a big write-up and new thread on this. Long story short, now that Beasley's in place, let's get past the Boozer/Brand fascination and build around what we have in place.

What we've all been missing (Riley too) is that probably a third (or even half) of the restricted guys on the market THIS offseason will just end up signing tenders, and be UNRESTICTED in 12 months. All are young/imporving and fit with Wade/Beasley better than the older Boozer and Brand would. A quick list:

Restricted This Year - Maybe a Third/Half of Them UNRESTRICTED Next Year
- Josh Smith
- Emeka Okafor
- Andre Iguodala
- Monta Ellis
- Andris Biedrins
- Luol Deng
- Ben Gordon (wouldn't fit as well as other guys)
- Jose Calderon
- Louis Williams
- Josh Childress

Add that to unrestricted's next year whou would also fit
- Baron Davis
- Lamar Odom
- Ron Artest
- Allen Iverson(short-term obviously)
- Corey Maggette (could be FA next yr, we'll see)
- Andre Miller
- Rasheed Wallace (eh)
- Jason Kidd (bleh)

Plus some restricted's next year who are probably attainable with nice offer
- Marvin Williams
- Ray Felton
- Other dudes

So let's let go of the Brand or Boozer idea. And hope that JOSH SMITH or OKAFOR or someone of that ilk does not agree to a longterm deal this summer, making them ours next summer.

Possible "Big 3s" Until Wade Retires:
- Wade/Josh Smith/Beasley
- Wade/Beasely/Okafor
- Wade/Iguadola/Beasley
- Wade/Deng/Beasley

Heat1114 - thanks for this cap update. Once you clean up the numbers, I propose the mods sticky that original post to the top of the forum as a reference. As we make signings and/or trades, we can update the original post to keep track of how it impacts our '09 space. Mods, lets see it...

Bump for an update. We're looking at 12.5 million in cap space next year as it stands.

Hmmm... I still like the idea of packaging Haslem with Blount or Banks (preferably both) for an expiring/s. That way we can have the ability to add two major pieces, possibly three. In fact it's possible we could be players in 2009 and 2010 if we can pull the rabbit out of the hat and move some salary.

He broke it down in detail - see the first post on Page 1.

You're probably not including cap holds for 4 empty roster spots under 12.
