A sign-and-trade is a way for Orlando to fill a need while adding zero salary, or even subtracting salary. Whereas giving J-Will the LLE or minimum adds what, $1 mill to $1.9 mill to their payroll? A couple mill doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is if it's YOUR couple mill it's a big deal, and it also puts them closer to the luxury tax.
Additionally, a sign-and-trade is also a way to unload someone who voices displeasure over PT and thus causes disharmony in the locker room. That's been Reddick's story so far, but with Peitrus and C-Lee added, you might be able to add Bogans to that list. He opted-in to stay there perhaps thinking he has a role, but now he's a lame duck who won't get minutes heading into a free agency year.
So for instance, trading Reddick for J-Will (signed to a similar salary) fills their need for an orchestrating PG, adds ZERO payroll for them, and rids themselves of a potential distraction. Plus, and this is always underrated, your making powerful agents happy by accomodating their clients wishes both ways, and your owner happy by not adding $1.9 mill in payroll unecessarily.
Whereas "waiting and signing J-Will for the LLE" adds $1.9 mill to the Magic's payroll and does nothing to unload the contract of guys who want out and will complian about it (Reddick, maybe Bogans). hat's also at play is that several other teams have reportedly expressed interest in J-Will ... Memphis and Denver come to mind ... so waiting around for a bargain means you'll probably lose out.
MANY reasons for Orlando to pursue a sign-and-trade if JWill's a guy they're targeting.
