Royal Ivey Commentary (Costanza reference)
Ty's blog had this blurb on Ivey I thought was great. Unfortunately I'm coming around to the same opinion.
The Ivey illusion
"Full of sound and fury signifying nothing."
Royal Ivey is constantly getting praised by the Bucks television announcers, but when you look at his statistics after the game, they inevitably stink. I think I figured out the disconnect.
Remember the episode on Seinfeld when Costanza revealed his trick for seeming busy at his Yankee job when in fact he wasn't doing anything? He said he would make "stressed out" noises and gestures, like sighing loudly or grimacing, and whenever he did his boss Wilhelm would think he was actually getting something accomplished.
I think that's what happens with Royal Ivey. Everything he does looks difficult. He looks so active on defense, which leads to observations like "Tenacious defense from Royal Ivey!" But then his man scores on him at will.
Or he'll doing things like making a bounce pass while falling down, which he did last night. "What a pass by Ivey!" the announcers proclaimed. But it wasn't that great a pass... its just that he made it look more difficult than it was by losing his balance.
Fam's blog is good, this guy's is also worthwhile.....

Completely agree with that. He may be our best perimeter defender but does that say much of anything? He's not really good at anything.
Honestly, Atlanta's PG problems were well documented do you think they would've played Ivey more than 10 minutes per game if they thought he was good? Do you think the Bucks would've gotten him for the minimum if other teams thought he was good?

I have been saying for awhile that guys like Royal, Bell, and Skinner only look good because they are average defenders on a horrible defensive team.
There aren't very many guards who could back up the Bucks defensive duo and not look at least passable on that side of the court.

Can we please start calling Ivey "Costanza"? I would love nothing more than to hear people yell "COOOO-stanza!" at the BC. Let's make this happen.
Brett at the Bratwurst has long been critical of Ivey as well...that he has a good defensive stance and looks like he's trying, so people assume he's actually a good defender when he gets beaten all the time.
He seems to foul guys an awful lot...the numbers say at a higher rate than Mo/Bell at least (insert joke about Mo never getting close enough to even foul guys).

I've been thinking this for a while. Ivey kept getting all this praise from Jim and John and we even had a few here who loved him. The guy isn't good at anything. Being the best defender on the Bucks is like being the prettiest Energee dancer. Stick around with a bunch of pigs and you are bound to stand out while being mediocre.

This just isnt fair. Anyone would look bad on defesne coming in the game to replace "lock down" defenders like Redd and Mo

I disagree. Royal Ivey is refreshing to watch on the court. He is a good defender, and he is the only guard on this team that can stay in front of his man, and actually tries to stay in front of his man. If anything, Ivey's problem is that he tries too hard on defense, because he constantly gets silly reach in fouls. However, I love his intensity. He is a good ballhandler, and can even make the jump shot fairly consistently. He is always active on the defensive end. I don't think we should take anything away from him.
