There's only 30 coaching jobs in the NBA, so it's always a good thing when new guys get a shot at it. It's also good when we have more black head coaches in a league that is predominantly black - not that this had any role in why Griffin was hired, but it is a nice side story.

That being said, if this does not secure a Giannis extension, this is a massive failure for a team with championship expectations. Big difference between Boston hiring Udoka after their coach stepped away and this team jettisoning it's best coach for an unknown. Yes, it is unlikely the Bucks would have gotten back to the mountaintop with Bud, but there was a certain known quantity of being one of the top 3-4 teams in the league barring major injury. Cannot risk that with an offseason already filled with questions surrounding the roster when your franchise's most important player/GOAT will be scrutinizing every move to decide if he wants to finish his career here.

Again, all is moot if Giannis reups, but this is adding another unnecessary gamble on top of an offseason that will already be fraught with risk.

Middleton is clearly back.

As long as Griffin is capable of remembering to use a timeout with .5 seconds we just improved

Giannis picking the coach, a compromise like our unqualified GM, or losing the guy we actually wanted to a rival contender, its a bad look either way. Why was Budenholzer even fired? So they didn’t look Horst’s way?

I'm coping with this by being relieved we didn't bring in Nurse, Monty, or Doc. At least this has a chance to work.

Griffin has been a highly regarded assistant for quite a while. Coached under Nurse, Skiles, Donovan, Thibs. I recognize that he's not who most of us wanted but he probably is ready.

When did that event in history happen exactly?

Casey, you know what I mean. Point still stands. Whenever assistants are hired over retreads, many question it.

Ones a proven head coach the other isn’t. Is it that hard to understand? Lol

Doc Rivers is even more experienced. Did you want him?

No but that's the point ... we didn't know about him before he became a head coach and he couldn't function so why get a rookie.. this is a 50/50 gamble.. Nurse was 90/10

Totally cool with them sticking with Khris and retooling around him and 34.

This thread will be revisited after we win the title. Great hire.

Because championship windows are incredibly small. It's sad that with the best player in the world on the team we can't do better than an unproven assistant.

It’s very favorable and convenient framing for Nurse, but an equally valid one could be that there wasn’t as much support for him in the Bucks FO as he thought, Giannis preferred Griffin, and that’s why he removed himself.

Yes. Candidates often "remove themselves from consideration" when they know they aren't it. Looks better than the Bucks chose his assistant over him.

Seems like this is exactly what happened:

Bucks to Nurse: "We're picking Griffin"

Nurse to his agent:"Put it out there that I withdrew"
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Not who I wanted but hoping for the best. Would hope he can be a good culture fit, something Nurse seemed less worthy of as each day passed and that he's a legit good coach, not just a guy Giannis wanted for whatever reason.

High risk move to be going with a new coach, but won't hold it against him given all of the successful first timers recently.

Nice, like that we are taking a chance. Looking forward to seeing some different offensive and defensive philosophies and sets

Griffin has a masters degree and a doctorate in leadership. He’s an impressive dude. I have already talked myself into it
