Make all of the teams that dont qualify for the playoffs go to Indonesia and play in a kumite/basketball deathmatch. Winner takes all and gets the 1st pick and Harley Davidson headbands.
Khris Middleton - Beating up on Trash Can Teams since 1943. Invisible Man status otherwise.

I do think the key lies somewhere in financial incentives for the low-seed playoff teams. If tanking hurts the bottom line for the rest of the owners as much as they say it does, then institute some sort of stricter cap on revenue sharing for teams that don't bring in enough gate revenue and/or ticket sales. Owners will start to care about letting their GM's all-out tank if it starts hitting them in the pocket book.

Spurs get Hilliard on their two-way, we get Koenig and a guy that bailed.

They needed to go to a three year weighted average so teams can't just tank for one year and get talent. I actually thought the smoothing of odds actually make taking more attractive. If the bucks are 8-13 pick area, I'm having them tank hard at the all Star break. If I knew they couldn't get a top 3 pick, the incentive is a lot less.

Get rid of the draft and let all college players become free agents and you have to use cap space to sign them.

Watch how fun the off season becomes.

This would be great but holy hell could you imagine some of the albatross deals some teams would sign? Imagine the deals guys like Mayo, Harrison Barnes, Marvine Williams, Beas, Thabeet, Kwame, Darko etc would've received.

Interesting idea but you would need to eliminate the max contract or the top rookies would all sign with big market teams who have the cap space.

Good idea.

Don't share playoff revenue.

Teams/players playing in round one split that revenue.
Teams/players playing in round two split that revenue.

Tanking from the lower lotto odds teams would end. Both teams and players are incentivized to play hard.

Though it probably wouldn't solve the superteam issue.
Please reconsider your animal consumption.

The NBA used to have territorial picks. It was suppose to be used to keep college players nearby in the NBA. Wilt Chamberlain was born in Philly and therefore Philly got him since Kansas didn't have an NBA team. Philly finished 49-26 and still got to take Chamberlain before the draft as a territorial pick. Crazy. Oscar Robertson went to the University of Cincinnati so the Cincinnati Royals got him. The Royals had the #1 pick anyway so it was moot. Although they could have taken Jerry West.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Aussie football did that aswell, it's a pretty sweet idea but obviously not necessarily fair.

We also have a father son rule where if your dad played 100+ games at a club you get his rights if you want him. Pretty cool.

So Golden State did get their rumored $20 million/year jersey sponsorship deal afterall.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/20680169/golden-state-warriors-sign-jersey-patch-advertising-deal-rakuten
Warriors chief marketing officer Chip Bowers said. "This was not the biggest deal that we were offered. We felt in order to grow our global vision, we had to be aligned with a global brand."

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and the Oak View Group (OVG) have a formal agreement to build a $600 million privately financed arena at Seattle Center

It sounds like we're a few years away from the return of the Sonics.

Seattle deserves a team. I just hope expansion is not in the plans. 30 teams is enough.

I completely disagree. Although I think there is a decent chance a team like New Orleans relocates, expansion would be great for the NBA. The league has never been stronger with all of the international talent that didn't exist even 20 years ago. Expansion will help the playoffs as well because the 8th seeds will be stronger. I'd also like to see Minnesota move to the Eastern conference and create division of Wolves, Bulls, Bucks, Pacers. It's realistic because I think two of the most likely expansion candidates to join with Seattle are Vancouver or Las Vegas.

Have to think New Orleans is the one relocated. Have a feeling Benson's kids will sell once the father passes (he's 90). The estate tax requires Benson's estate to get an appraisal on the value of the team when he passes. The value will appraise out for at least $1 billion and the attorneys/IRS could get into quite a debate over whether the value should be assessed based on worth in NOLA or amount a guy in Seattle would pay for it.

He paid $338 million for the team. I'm not sure about other methods of avoiding the estate tax, but think that bill will be problematic for his kids to retain control.

I hope we get expansion. I'm tired of more than half the teams making the playoffs. I want half the teams to make the playoffs.

Seattle should get a team for sure. Maybe San Diego now that they lost the Chargers?

Doesn't the league need to add an even number of expansion teams at a time? I wonder what city would get the other one.

Small steps in the right direction are still steps in the right direction.

I've long advocated for a 12-team playoff without conference seeding but I know it won't happen because the NBA doesn't want to lose out on the revenue from eliminating two 1st round series. It's the same reason they won't shorten the regular season from 82 games. With a 16 team playoff, I'd ideally like to see 40 total NBA teams but 32 is still an improvement from our current status where sub-.500 teams regularly make the postseason.

Still not fair to the fans of the worst teams though. What if a team is just bad? I don't support anything that makes it even harder for bad teams to turn it around.

This is tied to the parity issue as well. In basketball, you know the better team almost always wins a playoff series. There's no suspense. Mediocre teams don't have the same hope they do in MLB or the NFL. So part of the total lack of interest is inherent in the sport. The other part is the importance of superstars, which are far more likely to come from the very top of the draft than in other sports.

And the value of superstars is boosted even further in the cap era by how ungodly cap-efficient they are.
