Also possible that Saratsis is just being a good agent and representing an individual client to the best of his ability. It's not his job to line up Miami's cap however it's most convenient for them moving forward.

Re: Giannis Thread - 2 Time MVP - The Contract discussions
Seems like a very, very good sign, though Butler likely isn't in their long-term plans and moving him rather than the rest of the entire roster would allow them to still create space for Giannis.
Still though, this obviously makes it unnecessarily more painful to try to open up space for Giannis, and if Bam hits criteria to increase that contract even more, it literally won't be possible to pay him, Butler and Giannis even if they get rid of everyone else.

If they plan to move Butler, pleasing Saratsis would also be a good tactic...

Think of this like the Bucks waiving Ersan in regards to the Bogdan deal. Is it still possible Miami can bring Giannis into the fold? Sure, but they just took their best avenue of doing so away, and would need to really maneuver the cap in an inconvenient way to now do it. Couple this with the Raptors shelling out big money for their own free agents, and front offices appear to be operating under the rumors that we're all hearing in NBA circles, that Giannis is signing the super-max. No doubt that Saratsis wanted to get his other big client paid sooner rather than later, but it's highly unlikely that Bam would have threatened to play on the QO next season. Riley could have waited on this, but didn't.

I'm happy it potentially helps the Bucks but at some point the league should probably change the early extension rules to not penalize teams for taking care of their guys early.
Would be as simple making their cap hold the RFA number for like 2 weeks at the start of the league year to give that team time to use cap space.

Seriously I hate the modern age of "reporting".

There's basically nothing factual in that report other than Barry Jackson's tweet that someone who knows Giannis thinks that Giannis would feel X about Bam getting his money...etc.
Maybe that someone is Saratsis? But it smells like spin.

Not that I think Giannis is coming to Toronto at all but the Raptors did not mortgage any cap space for 2021. Baynes is a 2 year deal, team option in year 2, Alex Len is a 2 year deal with a team option in year 2, Bembry is the same.
Also Fred VanVleets contract was structured so that it declines by 8% next year to have more cap flexibility in 2021. The contract then increases significantly in years 3 & 4.
The only piece that kind of complicates things is OG if we extend him now vs. waiting next summer but I think its in both his interest and the Raptors interest to see how is year 4 development goes to see the type of player he will be.

Smells like spin? I think this one touches all 5 senses of spin.

The only way it isn't spin is if the source is Saratsis and/or the Heat have it on good authority that maxing Bam increases their chances of luring Giannis.
Barry Jackson is plugged in to the Heat.

Wait, you can do 2 year deals with team options?

Why create 3 levels of separation if you have it on good faith that he believes this? Seems to me he would be the scoop of the day if he had that much confidence in what he was saying.
Also, Jackson seems like Matt Velazquez if he was a try hard beat reporter.

Bam extension seems like a good sign in the scheme of things.
But never underestimate Don Riley.

Re: Giannis Thread - 2 Time MVP - The Contract discussions
People can talk about "not underestimating Riley" all they want. This signals that they view getting Giannis in 2021 as nothing but an extreme long-shot at this point. Renouncing all their cap holds on guys like Robinson, Nunn, etc. and then trading Jimmy Butler for cap space would be pretty stupid if they thought there was still even a remote possibility of him signing there outright. Needing to get a Bam extension done now to "make all parties happy" looks like some pretty obvious spin.

Re: Giannis Thread - 2 Time MVP - The Contract discussions
It certainly indicates that either this story or the one about them waiting to sign him to make sure they have room for Giannis is bullsh*t. Once the contract is done they just changed the report to some other way that still makes them a likely landing spot for Giannis.
