I no longer diet, I've simply changed how I eat. It's become a lifestyle thing for me.

I only eat two meals a day. I rarely snack.

I generally skip pasta and fried foods. I rarely eat red meat like steaks and burgers. I eat a lot more veggies. When I go grocery shopping I stick to the perimeter of the store and skip the middle isles. My refrigerator ALWAYS has the following: limes, lemons (citrus enhances almost any recipe), bell peppers, jalapenos, avocados, skinless chicken breasts, some kind of fish, red and white onions.

My work place cafeteria generally makes horrible for you hot meals, but the sandwich and salad bar is great and cheap. Just about every day I make a basic ham or turkey sandwich with pickles and mustard with sides of baby carrots, strawberries and cottage cheese.

I drink a lot of coffee, unsweetened iced tea and crystal light. And alcohol. It's probably my primary source of calories. If I were really dieting I wouldn't drink as much as I do, but I can stay slim and still have my whiskey sour or two beers or half a bottle of wine or gin and tonic and bitters and not gain weight so I really don't give a ****. Sorry Mr. Liver.

For dinner I like my foods to have some heat. I make a lot of guacamole (probably three batches a week) because it goes so damn well with spicy soups, salads, fajitas and as a substitute for butter on a sandwich. It's also become my go-to dip when entertaining. My friends all but demand I make it now.

So yea, my rules are skipping pasta (generally going easy on carbs and sugar), skipping processed foods, eating fresh foods, poultry and fish, not snacking, two meals, drink whatever booze I want.

Not trying, I successfully lost 55 pounds and am 15 pounds below my goal weight. I wanted to maintain a decent macronutrient balance so as not to lose too much lean muscle while cutting. I'm open to suggestions though and in no way consider myself an expert, so if you see an issue with my diet feel free to chime in.

I have not tried Wasabi Almonds but that sounds right up my alley. I'll be on the lookout.

As for Sriracha peas, that sounds pretty good also. The "hot chili sauce" in my list is Sriracha. Love the stuff.

Didn't mean to offend. It's amazing that you dropped 55 lbs without trying. I'm not an expert either, it's just counter-intuitive to me to use a high calorie supplement designed to add mass with a goal of dropping lbs.

I agree with pretty much everything you have to say, but I'm caught up on the semantics here. Your diet is defined as whatever you eat every day. It's just got the weight-loss connotation with it so it gets tossed into the four-letter word heap. A rose by any other name is still a rose. Healthy diet, awful diet, both diets.

Oh, and alcohol. I've found that it seriously interferes with my decision making, including some of my earlier posts in this forum. Some people can handle it, all the power to them, but it doesn't agree with me.

I guess I didn't word that correctly. Trust me, I was definitely trying. I am just no longer trying to lose weight and your question was posed in a present tense. No offense taken. I'm still trying to work on my body fat % and eventually I'll bulk back up a bit.

I reduced the bad calories in my diet to allow for the healthier whey protein isolate. It worked out as I maintained a caloric deficit with my RMR considered. And 28 grams of WPI is only 105 calories so it's not a big deal to work around.

Just thought that line was awesome. If I drink, it's just straight whiskey and I don't eat while drinking alcohol.

Agreed it interferes with good decision making. However, sometimes it's okay to say **** it and have a good time. IMO :D

My wife and I are both eating healthy right now but there are definitely nights where she says "I'm gonna cheat and have some frozen yogurt from Orange Leaf" to which I respond "Well then I will skip the yogurt and have a couple glasses of scotch". That's my idea of decision making :D

Wanted to follow up on this:

emunney wrote:

It's a common misconception that whey protein is only used for gaining mass.

http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20110715 ... eight-loss

Researchers say a couple of things may help to explain the weight and fat loss seen with whey protein.

People in the whey protein group had significantly lower blood levels of the hormone ghrelin than people eating the soy protein or carbohydrate.

"It's a hormone that helps regulate food intake," says David J. Baer, PhD, research physiologist at the USDA's agriculture research service in Beltsville, Md. "So the higher concentration, the more hungry somebody feels. The lower concentration, the fuller somebody feels."

http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2006/mar ... hey_01.htm

Taken together, these two studies indicate that whey consumption promotes feelings of satisfaction and fullness that lead to reduced appetite and decreased food intake. Whey may thus provide valuable assistance for those seeking to lose weight by helping to limit their caloric intake.

http://examine.com/supplements/Whey+Protein/

13.3. Appetite

Due to whey protein's satiety value (ability to induce the sensation of fullness), it can reduce body fat over time through reduced overall food consumption.

There is plenty of scientific evidence backing a gain in lean mass coupled with reducing fat mass during whey protein supplementation. While supplementing with whey and maintaining a caloric deficit, you can drop weight while retaining lean mass. That was my goal and it has worked out so far.

BTW, http://examine.com is an amazing site for supplement information backed by scientific research.

Ever try those? They are pretty amazing.

I just whipped up a batch of wasabi almonds and they're in the slow cooker as I type. First time I stirred them I found that I shouldn't stick my head over they slow cooker with my eyes open. Damn that stings! Nothing direct to my eyes, just the hot wasabi in the air.

Ends up around 305 cals per serving, but almonds are high cal as it is. Good fats though so it's all good.

141lbs down, maybe 15 to go. Will probably take me longer to lose the last 15 than it did to lose the first 141 though :(

On the whey protein thing, it's been a huge part of my weight loss too. My only cravings are sweet things, putting a scoop of protein powder in 300ml of milk with some ice and blending it is a better alternative to eating a donut or a muffin or something in my opinion.

Not all whey protein's are mass gainers. They're protein supplements, high in protein but low in everything else (and low in calories). You can get protein powders that are designed to add mass, they're extremely high in calories (all of my perpetually skinny friends are drinking these shakes by the gallon trying to add weight) which obviously wouldn't help when you're trying to lose weight but generally when someone says they're using whey protein it's not a gainer.

Thanks guys. Yeah it was pretty drastic but really not as hard as I thought it'd be. I haven't done before and afters yet just because I want to wait until I hit my goal, I don't wanna start feeling like I've made it if that makes sense when I've still got more I want to do. I'll PM you some when I get there though if you're interested.

Edit: Actually I take regular body-prog pics, doesn't quite count since it's not a before/after per say haha I'll pm you one.

Man that's crazy. I'm nearly 6'2 and when I was at my peak fitness I was 156 pounds total. You're going to lose my best body weight.

Thanks. It's kinda funny to me posting it because in real life the reaction seems to be "oh you've lost weight, cool" or "hey didn't recognize you, you lost a bit of weight?" people I don't know are generally more supportive

Lol for most of my life people would tell me not to worry because I had a huge build, big bones, all the usual fat person excuses. I never believed them because I knew I was fat. Now I'm seeing I was both fat but also just a big person in general, a guy at work told me I was built like a maori. I'd probably die if I was 156lbs.

I have the legs of supermodel, they weigh nothing. I'm about 185 now just from being a lazy bastard. I had basically Anthony Mundine's lighter division's boxing build except I'm not a total wanker who's used more HGH than Dwane Wade. :D
